Neil Young has announced four of his classic albums are receiving vinyl reissues. Freedom, Ragged Glory – Smell the Horse, Weld, and Arc will all be back in print on October 4th.
Notably, 1989’s Freedom includes “Rockin’ in the Free World,” which was played with Young’s permission while vice presidential nominee Tim Walz took the stage at DNC 2024 earlier this week. Ragged Glory was released the following year and has been expanded with four rare tracks for this reissue.
In 1991, Young put out Weld as a live album containing recordings of performances from his tour in support of Ragged Glory. Finally, Arc is a companion album to Weld featuring feedback, improvisation, guitar solos, and vocal fragments recorded during live shows.
These albums were first remastered for vinyl when they were collected together for Young’s Official Release Series Volume 5 box set (available for purchase here) last summer.
Young also has his Archives Vol.

The Eldorado, the swinging, anything-goes nightspot that gives the new Netflix documentary Eldorado its name, was an LGBTQ haven during Germany’s Weimar Republic, popular among Berlin’s trans population and anyone else who liked to let their hair down in public. It was also, as the film’s subtitle puts it, Everything the Nazis Hate. Which didn’t stop burly Hitler confidante and head of the Nazi Sa paramilitary wing Ernst Röhm, a not-terribly-closeted gay man, from frequenting the establishment. As the film explains, the Sa had a strong homoerotic element,...

Bouli Lanners, the Belgian actor-director of “The Giants” and “Eldorado,” is teaming with “Peaky Blinders” helmer Tim Mielants to direct “Wise Blood,” an English-language film that will star “Game of Thrones” actor Michelle Fairley and Julian Glover.
“Wise Blood” is a Belgian-Scottish-French co-production between Versus Production, Barry Crerar, and Playtime, which will handle international sales on the film. The project was first reported in Le Film Français.
On top of writing and co-directing “Wise Blood,” Lanners will star as Phil, a robust middle-aged man living in a Presbyterian community on the Isle of Lewis, in northern Scotland. One night, Phil suffers a stroke, causing him to lose his memory. Millie, a fellow Presbyterian who takes care of him, tells him falsely that they were secretly in love before his accident. As the pair “rekindle” their love affair, Millie fears Phil will one day recover his memory and discover her lie.

Once upon a time, the quintessential foreign-language film submission was a sweeping epic or something to do with WWII. No longer. More challenging and topical pictures have been entered and ultimately rewarded. Think of last year’s Chilean winner, “A Fantastic Woman,” centered on a transgender character.
Among this year’s submissions from 87 countries are at least a baker’s dozen that address the current zeitgeist. There are films about refugees and immigrants, sexuality and gender, single fatherhood, the plight of the urban poor, protecting the environment, anti-Semitism, female sex workers, sexual harassment and civilians caught in current wars.
As the rights of transgender individuals become a politically fraught issue in the U.S., Belgium’s “Girl,” directed by Lukas Dhont, offers a sympathetic,
naturalistically drawn portrait of a still-transitioning 15-year-old who is working toward her dream of becoming a professional ballerina.
“ ‘Girl’ began [with] the need to say something about how we perceive gender,...

Last year, the Academy documentary branch had to grapple with a record 170 documentary feature submissions for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar. This year, it’s not so bad: only 166 were entered. The short list of 15 will be announced, along with eight others for the first time on a single date this year: December 17.
All year, branch members have been getting lists of secure online screeners available to watch on the Academy website, increasing in volume until last month, when they received a batch of 77, with more to come. A whopping 166 documentary features have been submitted to the academy for consideration at the 2019 Oscars. That is down by four from last year’s record 170 submissions. Among these contenders are all of the highest grossing documentaries of the year including “Free Solo,” “Rbg” and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”
To winnow the entries down to the 15 semi-finalists that will be announced on December 17, the academy is sending monthly packages of the newly eligible documentary feature screeners to all 400 or so members of the documentary branch. While all members are encouraged to watch as many of these as they can, one-fifth of the voters are assigned each title. In late November, each branch member will submit a preferential ballot listing their top 15 choices.

In a year that has seen multiple documentaries find mainstream success, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the list of 166 docs that have been submitted for Oscar consideration this year.
Among the films on the list are Michael Moore’s anti-Trump polemic “Fahrenheit 11/9,” as well as CNN Films’ Ruth Bader Ginsburg biography “Rbg” and Focus’ Mister Rogers retrospective “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”
Other films considered frontrunners include “Three Identical Strangers,” the wild story of triplets who were separated at birth by a bizarre experiment, “Free Solo,” which documents the first ever attempt to climb Yosemite’s El Capitan without any climbing gear, and “Dark Money,” an investigative report into the influence of billionaires on American democracy through the lens of a Montana congressional race.

Exclusive: Will Ferrell is attached to star and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Gus Van Sant will adapt and direct Prince of Fashion for Amazon Studios.
The project is based on Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael Chabon’s GQ article, “My Son, The Prince of Fashion,” which follows the reporter’s visit to Paris Men’s Fashion Week with his 13-year-old son. In the article, Chabon tells a heartwarming story of his son’s passion for a world beyond his years, from meeting his fashion idol to experiencing a week of high-fashion runways, at the end of which he finally feels like he’s found “his people.” When the article was originally published in GQ, it became an internet sensation and was nominated for a “National Magazine Award.”

For most of the 60-plus years in which foreign-language film and documentary feature have been competitive Oscar categories, they have had very little to do with each other: separate fields to honor the kinds of film that most Academy voters won’t consider for best picture, with no intersection between them. To this day, no film has ever been nominated for both awards.
In recent years, however, a few have come close, beginning with a 2008 landmark: Israel’s “Waltz With Bashir.” Ari Folman’s path-breaking animated Lebanon War memoir made history by becoming the first documentary ever nominated for foreign-language film; the documentary branch, however, ruled it ineligible due to its lack of a bi-coastal qualifying run. (The animation branch didn’t spring for it either.) One doc has cracked the foreign-language category since: Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh’s Khmer Rouge reflection “The Missing Picture,” in 2013. Members of the Academy’s documentary branch received a generous gift from AMPAS on Friday: 77 new films that had qualified in this year’s Best Documentary Feature category.
And it turned what had been a modest year for docs — with a total of 83 films included in June, July, August and September groups — into one in which the number of eligible films that voters would need to watch nearly doubled.
The Academy also promised voters in the branch to expect a final batch of films in early November — which, if it hits double digits, will set a new record in the category.

The previous high, set last year, was 170 films. With 160 already on the Oscar eligibility list and one additional (though likely small) batch yet to come, this year’s crop will give voters a lot of work to do before...

Arin Ray, a former X Factor contestant turned R&B songwriter turned frontman, gets caught in a dangerous love triangle in his new video for “Communication.”
“Communication” is far and away the best song on Ray’s debut album, Platinum Fire, which came out in March. It’s minimal — little more than a guitar lick and a light rhythmic pulse — and melodic, filled with waves of background vocals and ad-libs. Dram shows up to deliver a typically off-kilter feature that interpolates the great Marvin Gaye hit “I Want You.”

Estonia has selected drama “Take It or Leave It” as its submission for the Oscar for best foreign-language film – the third time in five years that the country has put forward a movie from producer Ivo Felt, whose 2014 “Tangerines” received Estonia’s only Academy Award nomination.
“Take It or Leave It” beat six other contenders under consideration by a selection committee led by Edith Sepp, CEO of the Estonian Film Institute, which announced the selection Thursday. Five members of the seven-person panel picked “Take It or Leave It” as their choice for submission to the Academy.
Director Liina Triškina-Vanhatalo’s film tackles themes of responsibility, single parenthood and economic inequality. It tells the story of a 30-year-old construction worker who suddenly finds himself a single parent when his ex-girlfriend, whom he hasn’t seen for six months, has a baby girl and informs him that she’ll put the child...

As Switzerland takes the international cinema spotlight, hosting the prestigious Locarno Festival, Swiss Films – the agency responsible for promoting the Swiss cinema industry – has announced that veteran filmmaker Markus Imhoof’s European refugee documentary “Eldorado” will be submitted as the Swiss entry for the 2019 Academy Awards.
Should the feature make the final cut, it would be the second time for the director. In 1981, his historical-fiction feature, the similarly-themed “The Boat is Full,” earned the honored distinction, making it one of only five Swiss films to ever have done so.
When it world premiered at Berlin in February, “Eldorado” received almost unanimous strong reviews. Variety’s Guy Lodge said of the film: “In the sincerely felt ‘Eldorado,’ veteran Swiss filmmaker Markus Imhoof easily staves off ‘just another refugee doc’ shrugs with the unusual personal scope of his study.”
“Eldorado” tackles the divisive and highly-publicized subject of Europe’s current refugee crisis.

Acclaimed FX spy drama “The Americans” will be given a fitting farewell at the Emmys this year, without the need for any collusion or Russian meddling in the voting process.
Although “The Americans” was a slow-burn at the Emmys to begin with, managing a total of five nominations over its first three seasons (including a guest acting win for Margo Martindale in 2015), it finally broke through in a big way 2016 with five bids, including for Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actor (Matthew Rhys), Best Drama Actress (Keri Russell) and a second consecutive win for Martindale. Last year, although it missed the cut in Best Drama Series, it racked up four big nominations, including for both leads, writing and Alison Wright taking Martindale’s place in Best Drama Guest Actress.

Without doubt, British TV has produced some of the finest shows in the history of television. However, after focusing solely on the best of the best for the last three years, I decided it was time to acknowledge some of the stinkers. The following TV turkeys are remembered for all the wrong reasons.

People love ghost stories and pratically every pub, school and manor house in England is supposedly haunted by at least one unsettled soul. Blue Peter presenter Yvette Fielding attempted to shed light on the nations ghouls in the Sky Living documentary series Most Haunted. Despite the best efforts of Fielding and a crack team of paranormal investigators, the show did very little boost the claims of hauntees. Episodes typically involved groups of people skulking around darkened rooms until a creaking floorboard or a gust of wind sent them packing.

Ex-Emmerdale star Claire King has called on the BBC to revive '90s soap Eldorado. The actress, best known for playing soap superbitch Kim Tate between 1989 and 1999, said she would "beg" for a role in the Spanish-set serial should it return. She told Inside Soap: "I'd beg for a role if they brought back Eldorado. I have a house in Spain which is a couple of miles from the old set, so it'd be perfect." The 49-year-old also hinted that Polly Perkins - who portrayed Trish Valentine - could also reprise her role. "And my friend Polly Perkins lives just around the corner (more)...

EastEnders legend June Brown filmed on location yesterday for scenes showing her character Dot Branning reunited with estranged sister Rose. As announced last month, former Eldorado actress Polly Perkins has joined the cast of the soap in the role of Rose, who has had little contact with Dot for most of their lives. EastEnders filming took place at the seaside in Southend, Essex yesterday as the storyline apparently sees Dot track down Rose at her home near the beach. Peggy Mitchell's final EastEnders episode will feature a new alternative version of the soap's theme tune, Digital Spy can confirm. The special track is a reworking of the BBC show's long-standing alternative tune 'Julia's Theme', which traditionally airs at the end of episodes featuring intense emotion or drama. 'Peggy's Theme' has been created by Simon May, who composed the original EastEnders theme in 1984 and is also known for creating the theme tunes for several other shows, including Howards' Way and Eldorado. The extent to which the new tune will differ from 'Julia's Theme' - recognisable for a (more)...
