Netflix’s “Scoop” is inspired by the real events behind the bold efforts of “Newsnight” booker Sam McAlister to secure an interview with Prince Andrew amidst the fallout he felt from his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
It traces the admirable behind-the-scenes teamwork of McAlister, journalist and interviewer Emily Maitlis (Gillian Anderson), editor Esme Wren (Romola Garai), producer Stewart Maclean (Richard Goulding) and ultimate fact-checker Freddy (Jordan Kouamé), as well as photographer Jae Donnolly (Connor Swindells).
High stakes, adrenaline and twists and turns make “Scoop” a compelling watch, in addition to the star-stacked cast that portrays all the real-life players.

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
Many of the most memorable moments of my life have revolved around cinema. (Let’s not debate whether that is a good thing.) And 2023 was no exception. There was a twentieth-anniversary screening of the mesmerizing Mulholland Drive at Buffalo’s North Park Theatre featuring a performance from the remarkable Rebekah Del Rio. That was a biggie, but many of my most indelible 2023 cinema memories include my children. In July, my wife and our two kiddos had a rare group cinema outing to Barbie on its opening day, and I have rarely seen my then-eight-year-old daughter more genuinely excited to dance the night away. A few weeks earlier my son was similarly pumped for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny—his first (and only) chance to see...

The cost of fame sits in the living room wondering aloud whether dad will be home for Christmas. Why these two young boys’ voices have been deepened to sound like they’re 40-year-old drunks slurring through a bender is beyond me (an assumption of it being a dream or game is squashed once mom enters without the effect being called out), but their words have meaning. Troyal’s (Mickey Reece channeling Garth Brooks) star has risen to unimaginable heights and he’s embraced it to the point where his “good ol’ boy” demeanor can’t quite hide the growing ego beneath a cowboy hat. A highlight at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, actor Frances O’Connor’s directorial debut Emily finds Emma Mackey playing Emily Brontë, set in her own Gothic story that inspired her seminal novel, Wuthering Heights. Haunted by the death of her mother, Emily struggles within the confines of her family life and yearns for artistic and personal freedom, and so begins a journey to channel her creative potential into one of the greatest novels of all time. Ahead of the February 17 release from Bleecker Street, the first trailer has now arrived for the film also starring Fionn Whitehead, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Alexandra Dowling, Adrian Dunbar, and Amelia Gething.
Christopher Schobert said in his TIFF review, “Emily, the directorial debut for Mansfield Park and A.I.: Artificial Intelligence star Frances O’Connor, is one of the more remarkably assured first efforts in recent memory. Emma Mackey reaches new heights as ill-fated author Emily Brontë.
Set during the events that inspired “Wuthering Heights,” Frances O’Connor’s directorial debut “Emily” reimagines Brontë’s brush with love, embarking on an epic romance. Fionn Whitehead, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Alexandra Dowling, Adrian Dunbar, and Amelia Gething also star in the feature from Bleecker Street.
“Emily” debuted at 2022 TIFF and charts Brontë’s own Gothic story that inspired her seminal novel, “Wuthering Heights.” The official synopsis reads: “Haunted by the death of her mother, Emily struggles within the confines of her family life and yearns for artistic and personal freedom, and so begins a journey to channel her creative potential into one of the greatest novels of all time.”
“Emily” is produced by Piers Tempest, Robert Connolly, and David Barron.

The Oscars broke with tradition in 2022 by being somewhat light in winners from across the Atlantic, but normality looks likely to resume in 2023 — largely thanks to Martin McDonagh’s beloved Irish tragicomedy The Banshees of Inisherin. There are also a few other major U.K. heavyweights in the running, with Olivia Colman and Anthony Hopkins lurking further down pollsters’ lists.
But any notion that British and Irish success rests on the shoulders of such established names is easily quashed thanks to the rising talent that has emerged on the big and small screen over the last 12 months. From phenomenal directorial debuts — including one that has a good chance of making the Academy Awards — to several stand-out onscreen performances to one of the world’s biggest pop stars finally getting to fully test his acting skills, there are a number of fast-rising names whose...

There are no flirtations with the fourth wall in Frances O’Connor’s “Emily.” There is no synthpop on the soundtrack. No one ranks the relative attractiveness of the Brontë sisters on a scale out of 10, or attempts, bustle be damned, to twerk. Yet despite lacking all markers of the recent trend for girlbossified costume drama, the directorial debut from O’Connor — an actor who is no stranger to corsetry herself after “Mansfield Park” and “The Importance of Being Earnest” — gives us a strikingly current take on the Brontë behind “Wuthering Heights.” Unlike many a literary biopic, it feels anything but pagebound. If “Emily” were a book, however, it would be a fresh reissue of a Penguin Classic, with its timeless orange cover unobtrusively updated to be crisp and covetable all over again.

Emily, the directorial debut for Mansfield Park and A.I.: Artificial Intelligence star Frances O’Connor, is one of the more remarkably assured first efforts in recent memory. Shot with breathtaking beauty and acted with extraordinary emotion and grace, this exploration of the life and development of Emily Brontë is tremendously enveloping. Emily looks deep into Brontë’s life story for evidence of what that really means. While it is unclear how much of the film is historically accurate and how much is conjecture, O’Connor’s account of the author of Wuthering Heights feels respectful and well-reasoned.

Despite writing one of the most rugged and enduring novels in all English literature before her 30th — and final — birthday, Emily Brontë spent the whole of her life in a suffocating environment that saw her brilliant imagination dampened at every turn. It was dampened by the patriarchy scared of her talent (“Wuthering Heights” was of course published under a pseudonym), by the individual men who knew her personally, and even sometimes by her own sisters, two of whom survived childhood to become accomplished writers themselves. Vindicating as it might be that Brontë’s one great book is still read widely some 200 years later, her remarkable victory over death pales in comparison to the poetic irony of her legacy: Few authors of any age have ever so inflamed public imagination by the mere fact of their existence.
In that light, it’s easy to appreciate why Brontë’s life so naturally...

The Crown is bringing another pivotal figure in British history to life during its fifth season.
Netflix announced Friday that Jonny Lee Miller had landed the role of Prime Minister John Major.
Major served as prime minister and leader of the UK’s Conservative party from 1990 to 1997 after serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Foreign Secretary under Margaret Thatcher from 1987 to 1990.

Miller joins an ensemble that will include Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce (Game of Thrones) as Prince Philip, Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) as Princess Margaret, and Elizabeth Debicki (The Night Manager) as Princess Diana.
Dominic West (The Affair) has also reportedly been cast as Prince Charles, but casting has yet to be confirmed.

Billie Piper has joined the cast of Lena Dunham’s feature adaptation of “Catherine, Called Birdy” for Working Title and Amazon.
Piper stars in the medieval coming-of-age comedy opposite “Fleabag’s” Andrew Scott and “Game of Thrones” breakout Bella Ramsey. The film, written and directed by Dunham, is in the early stages of production.
“Catherine, Called Birdy” has been a longtime passion project for Dunham, who first announced plans to adapt the award-winning 1994 children’s novel by Karen Cushman into a film in 2014. The coming of age story, set in 13th century England, follows a 14-year-old girl named Catherine (Ramsey) who “bucks against convention,” namely the arranged marriages her father (Scott) has planned out for her. This Bridgerton feature contains spoilers for the series.
Although Netflix’s Bridgerton has actively resisted the label of historical accuracy in favor of a fantasy approach to the era, it is still worth uncovering which scenes, events, and references represent a more creative interpretation to history and which are references to real events.
Dr. Hannah Greig, the historical advisor to the series, describes Bridgerton as “a combination of a historical truth – which is to say that the past is more diverse than we tend to see on screen, and we tend to accept in our popular imagination. But it’s also a fictionalising, asking what history might look like under certain different circumstances.” This approach is in keeping with the novel series the show is based on which blends the Regency Era with modern romantic fantasies. Here’s a list of some of the plots where alternate history may or may not be a factor.

As the streaming wars continue to heat up and get more competitive, a lot of studios must be regretting their decision to hand over the rights to a lot of their biggest movies and TV shows, which puts them at a significant disadvantage in trying to gain a foothold in the battle for subscribers.
Disney Plus is doing just fine given the vast amount of brands they have as part of their ever-expanding portfolio, which has only increased exponentially following their takeover of Fox, while Netflix are relying more heavily on their in-house content than ever as they let the rights to more and more pre-existing stories revert back to their original owners.

“It’s not an easy watch,” says Annabel Scholey of her latest role in BBC One’s The Salisbury Poisonings. “It’s harrowing but it’s an important story to tell.” The three-part drama airing on consecutive nights from Sunday the 14th of June depicts the aftermath of the 2018 assassination attempt on Russians Sergei and Yulia Skripal in the English city of Salisbury.
“You’d expect spies and the political side of things,” says Scholey, “but this is a different angle.” The drama focuses entirely on the local response to the Novichok poisonings led by public health director Tracy Daszkiewicz (Anne-Marie Duff), and on inadvertent victims Dawn Sturgess (MyAnna Buring) and DS Nick Bailey (Rafe Spall).
Scholey plays Sarah Bailey, wife to the police officer who became contaminated with the nerve agent during a search of the Skripals’ home. Despite the event’s dramatic international context, the efforts made to...

While Netflix continues to add a lot of great content, including some new original series for the summer, the platform is also going to be losing parts of its library. In particular, July will see The Matrix trilogy depart the service for the newly launched HBO Max, with some other Warner Bros. movies also making their way over to the fledgling subscription rival. What titles, then, are no longer going to be available on Netflix come July?
Well, among the films that are leaving next month, notable pics include Cloverfield, The Curse of Benjamin Button and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, as well as the majority of the Tremors franchise. Another big Warner Bros. title, Christopher Nolan’s Inception, will also be removed, part of what’s becoming a mass transfer of content over to HBO Max as the rival looks to compete with Netflix on its back-catalogue of movies. Other high-profile losses include Ghost Rider,...

New year, and a host of new Netflix additions to match.
While subscribers are currently mourning the loss of Friends – after going dark today, January 1st, the beloved sitcom won’t be available until HBO Max arrives in May – Netflix has today rolled out a bevy of fresh TV shows and movies to keep us entertained, including some truly unmissable horror properties.
From Event Horizon to Cloverfield, The Amityville Horror to the Tremors franchise, Netflix’s horror category has officially been restocked. There’s plenty to choose from, too, including the 2002 rendition of The Ring, which only makes us long for a competent retelling of the Japanese horror legend to right the wrongs of Rings (2017). At least we have the upcoming Grudge reboot to look forward to on Friday (or January 24th if you happen to be located in the United Kingdom).

Ok confession time. Despite possessing a degree in English literature I have never once read a novel by Jane Austen. I'm well aware of her enduring popularity even though it's been two centuries since she passed. Her critique and commentary on the landed gentry of late 18th century England was immortalized in classic works such as Pride and Prejudice and Mansfield Park. Austen's works…...

Following its world premiere at Tiff last year, the first trailer for the unique experimental film Mouthpiece has arrived for Mouthpiece, coming from director Patricia Rozema. The film delves into the conflict surrounding a young woman named Catherine (Amy Nostbakken) and her personified inner conflict, which is embodied by another woman also named Catherine (Norah Sadava). She struggles with heartache and contemplation after the death of her mother (Maev Beaty), who gave up her career to have children, a facet that dispels Catherine’s worldview as a headstrong single writer playing by her own rules.
Jared Mobarak wrote in his Tiff review, “Rozema does a great job adapting things to the needs of a cinematic medium. She keeps them close, but not always together. While they ride her bike on two seats, they can also find themselves watching the other make a fool of herself or speak a necessary truth...

In an age where special effects reign supreme, there’s one aspect of the filmmaking process that hasn’t gone through a radical transformation — music. Some of the best movies in any given year would be sorely lacking without their memorable scores, and this has remained true well into the first two decades of the 21st century.

A love of Jane Austen is a habit the world just can’t seem to kick.
This week marks the 200th anniversary of famed author (and hopeless romantic) Jane Austen’s death. The author continues to bring England’s Regency period to life (and romanticize it) to her countless fans. In a sign of her legacy’s tremendous influence, the Bank of England debuted a 10 pound note with her face on it this week.
But to call Austen lovers simply “fans” is underselling their devotion. Fanatics, perhaps, is more accurate. They join clubs for Austen lovers in droves — the Jane Austen...

Paparazzi and fans alike flocked to the Edinburgh set and disrupted filming, making it tough for the filmmakers to keep anything secret. “They were trying to shelter our costumes. They had umbrellas and were like, ‘Put your hood on when you get your hair done,’” recalls Jonny Lee Miller, who once again plays platinum-blond drug addict Sick Boy. “Danny said, ‘It’s like f--king Star Wars up here.’ There was a level of excitement which was quite alarming.”

As viewers will see tonight the dawn of the Industrial Revolution has been recreated in all its gory, dirty glory. This is a bleak beginning to a story that has an even darker path to tread in future weeks.

The show airs its first episode tomorrow night on BBC One and charts the return of James Delaney, described by the actor as a “perverse renaissance man”, to London from his adventures in Africa upon the death of his Father.
He is a man with guilty secrets, and one who gives no quarter to the hostility he encounters from his family and the institutions which seek to hold him to order. As viewers will see tonight the dawn of the Industrial Revolution has been recreated in all its gory, dirty glory. This is a bleak beginning to a story that has an even darker path to tread in future weeks.

Reuniting with Kenneth Lonergan after 2000’s You Can Count on Me, composer Lesley Barber‘s score for Manchester by the Sea is one of the year’s most beautiful. When we recently spoke with her, we said the soundtrack is, “like the surrounding film, something of a contradiction: unmissable yet unintrusive, and enveloping as it disappears into the dramatic action.” We’ve now teamed with Milan Records to give away four CDs to our readers. All entries must be received by 11:59 Pm Est on Sunday, November 27th.
To enter, do the first two steps and then each additional one counts as another entry into the contest.

“Manchester by the Sea” is a top Oscar contender, becoming one of the most universally adored films by critics since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. The drama stars Casey Affleck as a man who moves back to his New England home in order to take care of his deceased brother’s 16-year-old son.
The score is composed by Lesley Barber and perfectly accompanies the somber film with its string and piano arrangements. The album features 16 song composed by Barber, as well as by various artists including Gerhard Kanzian and Ed Lewis, Musica Sacra Chorus and Orchestra and more.

Early in Patricia Rozema’s “Into the Forest,” an intimate sci-fi portrait of sisterhood which has been adapted from Jean Hegland’s 1996 novel of the same name, one of the film’s few male characters casually declares that it’s the end of the world. He may not be wrong: It’s been 10 days since an unexplained power outage has sent the entire country back to the Stone Age, and there doesn’t seem to be any hope that the lights will come back on again anytime soon.
In northern California, where Eva (Evan Rachel Wood) and her younger sister Nell (Ellen Page) live in a secluded glass house with their dad (Callum Keith Rennie), our precariously fragile civilization has already started to crumble. Kate Beckinsale is deliciously acerbic in Whit Stillman’s fifth film in 26 years – a mashup of two early Jane Austen stories
There’s always been more than a touch of Jane Austen about the films of Whit Stillman, the incisive social satirist behind 1998’s The Last Days of Disco and 2011’s Damsels in Distress. Stillman’s 1990 debut feature Metropolitan drew inspiration from Mansfield Park, and his subsequent studies of social manners have all possessed an arch observational tone that one imagines Austen might have appreciated. In 2003, he was reported to be working on a project called Winchester Races, which would marry material from the unfinished Austen novels The Watsons and Sanditon. Here, he draws on the title and plot respectively of two early epistolary works; Love and Freindship (Stillman duly standardises the young Austen’s spelling) and Lady Susan. The subtitle of the former was Deceived in Freindship and Betrayed in Love,...

Anyone who’s followed the career of Whit Stillman wasn’t surprised to hear that he was adapting the obscure Jane Austen novella “Lady Susan” into his new film “Love & Friendship.” The writer/director established his Austen fandom with his first movie, 1990’s “Metropolitan,” which featured two characters debating the merits of “Mansfield Park” (while they themselves […]
