This weekend, strong holdover “T2 Trainspotting” outperformed Fox Searchlight disappointment “Wilson” at the specialty box office. Jazz documentary “I Called Him Morgan” is the bright spot among new specialty entries — at just one theater. This year, there are so many well-reviewed wide releases enjoying huge success with smart adults that the indies need a strong critical response to compete for moviegoers.

“Wilson” did not make a splash at Sundance, and even a top-flight specialized distributor like Fox Searchlight can’t transform a film with mediocre reviews into a success. Wilson and Ghost World writer Daniel Clowes will adapt his own graphic novel.
Focus Features has acquired the film rights to the graphic novel Patience.
Focus has attached the writer of the book, Daniel Clowes (Ghost World), to pen the screenplay adaptation.
The novel was published by Fantgraphics in March this year, and spent 19 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller List.
The story depicts the efforts made by the main character, Jack, to overcome the grief of losing his murdered wife, Patience, through the use of a time machine and a psychedelic journey through her past.
Focus president of production Jim Burke commented: “Daniel’s story is beautifully imagined. As with all of his works, it is vivid and affecting. Patience will be a thrilling, funny, and moving exploration of emotions we’ve all experienced.”

Meat Loaf has come a long way since his acting debut in the 1975 classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” He’s appeared in countless films and television shows including “The 51st State,” “Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny,” “Monk,” “Glee,” and “House, M.D,” among others. He’s also a Grammy Award winner and has sold more than 80 million records worldwide – but don’t call him a musician (more on that later).
Speaking with The A.V. Club, Meat Loaf revealed that “Fight Club” was one of his favorite movies that he’s been a part of because David Fincher let him take part in the directing process.
The actor portrayed Robert “Bob” Paulson, a former body builder who due to his excessive use of steroids got testicular cancer, and at times helped the director pick key takes.

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column (with a special year-end retrospective today) focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.
It hasn’t been a great year for domestic movie poster design. Yes there are always a handful to admire each month, but that’s not saying much when you’re comparing them to absolute dreck.
Whereas most years I’m collecting 15-20 images and find myself exasperated trying to cull them down into a Top Ten, 2015 had me struggling to fill the #10 slot. Only maybe three or four were “musts” and the rest ended up waging a war of attrition to...

Monday was a very busy day for Oscar nominees. Aside from the main event that I covered in detail yesterday, the Oscar Nominees luncheon, a couple of trade sites poached the Academy’s large turnout for nighttime parties offering yet more photo ops. The bigger names usually walk down the carpets at those things, head through the door, grab a piece of pizza and head to the exit. Anything to keep your name out front and your face in front of voters at a crucial time. And since there are lots of nominees who come into town just for the luncheon, their handlers make them available for one last late-night talk show appearance before voting starts.

Fox Searchlight’s The Grand Budapest Hotel is easily 2014’s Specialty Release box office champion. The film outpaced second ranked St. Vincent by just over $16M. In all, the 2014 Specialty Top 10 amounted to over $277.6 million, about 10% greater than last year’s $249.2M-plus Top 10 total, which included titles Instructions Not Included, Oscar-winner 12 Years A Slave and Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine. As with all the films surveyed here, the numbers reflect theatrical grosses and do not take into account VOD/digital, which remain state secrets for the most part for a huge swath of distributors. RADiUS did reveal some of their on-demand numbers in 2014, while Sony has been forthcoming with its recent digital roll out of its controversial The Interview. The term “specialty release” can be a slippery slope, but for this article, titles considered were in limited release for a significant period during their launch.

Maureen O’Hara, now 94, took time to fondly remember the Hollywood greats from her past such as John Wayne and John Ford. Legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki said he was just happy to be in the same room as Maureen O’Hara. Masterful screenwriter Jean-Claude Carriere gave a moving tribute to Hollywood’s “forgotten” writers. And Harry Belafonte, winner of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, galvanized the industry crowd by asking them to aim higher.
Yes, it was quite a night for the four honorees of the Sixth Annual Governors Awards of the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Quite a night. And the Academy got this awards season off to a roaring start with this blessedly non-televised celebration of the greats in this business who may not have always been given their due. It has also become a night for major schmoozing and networking among Academy voters and the huge numbers of Oscar hopefuls.

Never mind the other specialty films this weekend. It’s really all about Birdman (Or The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance) and its high-flying debut, averaging more than $100,000 per theater in its opening weekend.
The Venice/Telluride feature directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and starring Michael Keaton had one of the best bows of the year, exceeded only by another of distributor Fox Searchlight’s specialty projects, last spring’s The Grand Budapest Hotel (that one opened in four theaters with nearly $203K averages).
But there was plenty of success this weekend to go around. Roadside opened Sundance fave Dear White People with gusto. Gkids’ The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya, Rocky Mountain’s Got The Father and Tribeca’s Listen Up Philip also had solid to decent bows in limited release. And TWC’s St. Vincent and Spc’s Whiplash held strong in their second frame.

Perched at the top of this week’s flock of specialty film debuts is Birdman (Or The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance), a possible Oscar contender starring Michael Keaton. Though it’s a limited release, Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s complex film about a fading action-hero trying to reclaim his mojo on Broadway nevertheless combines elements of a superhero franchise that could tap fans well beyond the art house.
It’s part of yet another big flock of specialty film debuts coming this weekend, including the controversy-minded Sundance award-winner Dear White People, William H. Macy‘s directorial debut Rudderless, Kristen Stewart‘s Camp X-Ray, Jason Schwartzman‘s Listen Up Philip, The Golden Era, Summer Of Blood, and one great revival, Alain Resnais’ 1959 landmark Hiroshima Mon Amour.

Ted Hope partnered with James Schamus and David Linde in Good Machine, the prolific director-centric indie company behind Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Y Tu Mama Tambien, In The Bedroom, Brokeback Mountain, Happiness, The Ice Storm and The Brothers McMullen. In this excerpt from his new book Hope For Film (Soft Skull Press), Hope writes about that seminal moment when the indie business changed and larger companies looked to swallow the prestige film factories. The principals all went in exceptional directions after Good Machine was swallowed by Universal Pictures back in 2000: Schamus ran Focus Features with Linde before the latter became Universal Pictures co-chairman; Hope formed This Is That with future taste making producers Anne Carey and Anthony Bregman. Here, Hope, who is currently CEO of film streaming platform Fandor, describes the feeding frenzy for Good Machine, and how the principals tried to better capitalize a company while navigating the collision between indies and studios.

Midway through David Lynch’s Palme d’Or winning, bizarro road-tripping love story, Lula tells her lover Sailor, ‘This whole world is wild at heart and weird on top,’ as if describing not the actual world, but the cinematic pop-nightmare universe which Lynch has envisioned for them to inhibit. Alternately weird and romantic, hysterical and disturbing, Wild at Heart is a farcical melodrama heightened by sweltering sexual passion, non-stop pop culture references and a remarkably unhinged sense of the contradiction between self-confidence and diffidence. And despite a plot that weaves in spousal murder, Elvis sing-a-longs and a warped Wizard of Oz motif, Sailor and Lula still receive their happy ending in the sun. Who would have thought that Barry Gifford’s pulpy novel could be blended like a sugary spiked milkshake with the likes of ‘Love Me Tender’ and Glinda the Good Witch. Only from the mind of David Lynch.

I'm not sure how interesting this will be for most of you, but Marvel has updated the Iron Man 3 official site with the logo animation you see to the right. Robert Pattinson has joined the cast of Werner Herzog's Queen of the Desert opposite Naomi Watts with a late Fall 2012 start being eyed. The film is based on the true story of Gertrude Bell (Watts), the traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attache for the British Empire at the dawn of the twentieth century. Pattinson's character is that of T.E. Lawrence, whom most know as Lawrence of Arabia. [Variety] Keanu Reeves continues to discuss the prospects of a Bill and Ted's 3 this time telling GQ, "One of the plot points is that these two people have been crushed by the responsibility of having to write the greatest song ever written and to change the world. And they haven't done it.

When the man behind me bolted after the first act of "Ghost: The Musical," saying "worst thing I ever saw on a stage" that sounded like the truth. He was also saving himself from what feels more like an assault than a Broadway show.
Veteran theatergoers all have their worsts. I saw Meat Loaf in purple tights do a rock version of Hamlet 36 years ago, and I still suffer flashbacks. That was my personal bottom and "Ghost: The Musical" works hard at coming close.
The debacle at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre prompts so many questions. Mainly: Why? Why mount a musical of a slight movie, which though beloved by some, has a pretty goofy plot? I adored Patrick Swayze. Who didn't? But if there are real ghosts, Swayze, Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontaine should be haunting the theater to put a stop to this.

I love the Sundance Film Festival. The winners of the fest normally have long legs enough to last all the way until the Oscars. This year, for example, "Pariah" was one of the breakout hits from Sundance, and the Dee Rees coming-of-age flick is being distributed by Focus this month. Its star, Adepero Oduye, recently received the Best Female Lead nomination from the Independent Spirit Awards.
So now, Sundance has unveiled its in-competition slate for 2012 and the films, as always, are quite intriguing. The fest runs from Jan. 19th to the 29th in Park City, Utah. Check out the full list below:

Park City, Ut – Sundance Institute announced today the films selected for the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Robert Redford, Founder and President of Sundance Institute remarked, “We are, and always have been, a festival about the filmmakers. So what are they doing? What are they saying? John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, said, “In these challenging economic times, filmmakers have had to be more resourceful and truly independent in their approaches to filmmaking.

It seems like we are only just diving into the awards season, but the 2012 film year is right around the corner. There is no better place to get a tast of what is to come than Park City Utah in late January. We’ll be attending the fest again (read last year’s round-up) and today we have the first competition titles. This is the same group from last year which titles include Martha Marcy May Marlene, Like Crazy, Another Earth, Pariah, Being Elmo, Take Shelter and many more. Are there more great films to be found this year? I have no doubt the line-up below will include break-out titles, so lets get to it.
At first glance, the most notable film is Antonio Campos’ Simon Killer, who last directed Afterschool and is in the Martha Marcy trio. It is easily my most-anticipated from this group, along with Quentin Dupieux‘s Rubber follow-up Wrong.

First off, I have to tell you that this page may load slow. We're making an awful lot of calls to the Amazon Api here, and that's bound to monkey with things. If you have no idea what that means... it's shiny. Please note also that, for the same reason, you may find, depending on traffic, that not all of the Amazon details will load properly. I apologize for that, it's just the nature of the beast, and the fact that the Api wasn't really meant for such things. If you refresh, it will probably fix.
You may have heard me mention this giveaway quite a while ago, and it's taken me a long time to figure out what sort of format to put things in, and I kept added things. Eventually it became too much to really give any kind of run down on the items, so I decided...

Like always, Comic Con International is revealing the schedule of events day by day. It certainly makes planning a lot easier. But that's neither here nor there. There's a lot of panels to cover, so let's just get to it. Check out the pertinent film and television panels set for the first two days of the show after the jump.
The first "day" of the show is Preview Night only, so there's only a couple things happening that night:
6:00-9:00 Special Sneak Peek Pilot Screenings: Alcatraz, Person of Interest, The Secret Circle, and Supernatural: The Anime Series—
Comic-Con and Warner Bros. Television proudly continue their annual Preview Night tradition with exclusive world premiere screenings of the pilot episodes of three of the most highly anticipated TV series pilots of the 2011-12 television season — Alcatraz, Person of Interest, and The Secret Circle — as well as Supernatural: The Anime Series,...

We're less than two weeks away from the 2011 San Diego Comic Con, and convention organizers have finally released the schedule for the first day of programing. You can find the full schedule on comic-con.org [1], or after the jump I've listed the film and television highlights, which includes the Masters of the Web panel which I've been invited to be a panelist on (In full disclosure, I've been asked to be on this panel for a few years now, but I've only just recently gotten over my fear of speaking in front of large audiences). It should be a fun panel, and I hear they will be giving away some really cool prizes as well. Celebrity Apprentice 2011! Why was singer Mark McGrath really fired? [Apr. 10] Fans of the NBC reality television show Celebrity Apprentice, hosted by Donald Trump, witnessed singer Mark McGrath get fired! The two celebrity teams, Backbone for the men and Asap for the ladies, were assigned the task of promoting Australian Gold sunscreen for the week. Project manages for the week were Mark McGrath and Latoya Jackson. Memorable during the episode were Atlanta Housewives star Nene Leakes and actor Gary Busey for their witty remarks to fellow cast members and Australian Gold representatives! In the background of the episode this week were Survivor winner Richard Hatch and the usually very verbal, talk show host, Star Jones. As project manager, the Sugar Ray singer was taxed with the challenges of dealing with singer Meatloaf’s hot temper and Gary Busey’s need for constant attention and direction. At one point, Gary actually said that...

We all agree that the planet is in a perilous position. But what is the best way to save it? We name the 20 activists, filmmakers, writers, politicians and celebrities who will be setting the global environmental agenda in the coming year
From David Attenborough to Rob Hopkins, founder of the Transition Town movement, the Observer Ethical Awards has honoured many movers and shakers in ecological and social justice. So it seems fitting to launch our sixth awards by profiling the 20 global figures who'll exert influence in 2011. For those on our list, the coming year might best be described as "take your partners" time, as activists and corporates scramble for power – and we're predicting some unlikely marriages ahead. Commentators have noted that big business is taking an unprecedented interest in the environment and are pushing for conservation capitalism. The really big decisions from the climate-change conference in Cancun have effectively been...

I've been bad and I'm quite behind on blogging. Supposed to be working on that "Best Shot" for this evening (La Dolce Vita) but I am a million hours behind and now the Academy has gone and finalized the Oscar Foreign Film list and the Documentary Short Finalist so there's that, too. Updating now so more on something or other in a couple of hours.
In the meantime this is a shot from Madonna's "Bad Girl" video which I've been obsessing over this week due to all The Social Network / David Fincher related posting. And I don't even like the song! Discuss.
I promise I'm logging off of The Fincher Network now but isn't that shot heaven? Smoking kills but damn does it look good in movies/music videos. (See also: the complete works of Wong Kar Wai.) Incidentally the cinematographer on the Bad Girl video was Juan Ruiz Anchía,...

Quentin Tarantino's World War II actioner "Inglourious Basterds," a pivotal Weinstein Co. release starring Brad Pitt, debuted gloriously during the weekend with an estimated $37.6 million in chart-topping boxoffice.
"Basterds" is touted by some as a make-or-break film for the recently struggling indie, even though Universal is distributing the film internationally and will share evenly in any worldwide profit. Sony's sci-fi thriller "District 9" finished second after falling just 49% in its sophomore session to $18.9 million and a 10-day cume of $73.5 million.
The weekend's other three wide openers bowed softly. Robert Rodriguez's PG-rated family fantasy "Shorts" from Warner Bros. rung up $6.6 million for sixth place; Fox Searchlight's comedy "Post Grad" registered $2.8 million in 10th, and Disney's sports documentary "X Games 3D: The Movie" -- slotted for one week only in 1,399 extra-dimensional venues -- fetched just $800,000.
Among other second-frame holdovers, Warners' literary adaptation "The Time Traveler's Wife" fell a modest 46% to...

- #5. A Serious Man Director/Writers/Producers: Coens. BrosDistributor: Focus Feature. The Gist: The story follows an ordinary mans search for clarity in a universe where Jefferson Airplane is on the radio and F-Troop is on TV. It is 1967, and Larry Gopnik, a physics professor at a quiet midwestern university, has just been informed by his wife Judith that she is leaving him. She has fallen in love with one of his more pompous colleagues, Sy Ableman, who seems to her a more substantial person than the feckless Larry. Larrys unemployable brother Arthur is sleeping on the couch, his son Danny is a discipline problem and a shirker at Hebrew school, and his daughter Sarah is filching money from his wallet in order to save up for a nose job. While his wife and Sy Ableman blithely make new domestic arrangements, and his brother becomes more and more of a burden,

Meat Loaf is focusing his sights on his Hollywood career - because he considers himself an actor first, musician second.
The Bat Out of Hell rocker - real name Marvin Lee Aday - has enjoyed huge success as a singer, but at 60, he wants to be remembered more for his skills on screen than anything else.
When asked whether he's more of a musician or an actor, he tells Britain's Esquire magazine, "I'm an actor. I've done 43 films and I've got offers for a couple more on the table.
"I don't always choose them for the size of the role - there is an old actor saying and it is that there are never small roles, only small actors.
And Meat Loaf - who has starred in movies including Fight Club and The Pick of Destiny - singles out his best-ever performance as that in the lesser known 2001 drama Focus, alongside William H. Macy and Laura Dern.
He adds, "Forget making records, or selling records. That's it, right there, the best thing I've ever done - (Focus), a little film that we shot in Toronto (Canada) and no one knows about it."...

Actress Laura Dern has declared that being dumped by Billy Bob Thornton was the best thing that could have happened to her. Less than two years after the bust-up, the 34-year-old beauty has found new love with musician Ben Harper, is the mother of a beautiful five-month-old boy and has starred in four movies. The blonde star says, "I can't believe how things are working our for me these days." Dern was devastated when Thornton left her for Angelina Jolie, now his wife. But Harper, 32, mended her shattered heart. Dern gushes, "For the first time, I'm with someone who makes me feel free. Ben and I are just two people in love." The sweethearts haven't tied the knot yet, but they are thrilled to be the parents of little Ellery. Meanwhile, Dern's career is booming. She appears in Novocaine and Focus and in the upcoming movies Damaged Care and I Am Sam, starring Sean Penn. Says the actress, "I might just be the luckiest girl alive."...
