2003. It’s an era of action movies where we’re living in a post-Matrix, post-Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon world. Those films’ major success and notoriety prompted Hollywood to try bringing Kung Fu wire work to more of their action films. Meanwhile, two of the biggest names in the genre – Jackie Chan and Jet Li – were attempting to expand their brand into the American market — with films that many of their fans considered to be watered-down versions of their previous works. Around the same time, Doug Liman debuted a newer visceral style of action in his film, The Bourne Identity, which would make its own mark on action films to come. However, somewhat hidden in all that activity was a budding star in Thailand who had taken his amazing physical skills and called back to some of the classic, acrobatic action that defined Hong Kong’s most beloved period of martial arts movies.

Mike Leigh’s hotly-anticipated, but super-secretive, new film will see the iconoclastic British director reunite with his Secrets & Lies star Marianne Jean-Baptiste.
Hard Truths is Leigh’s first film since 2018’s Peterloo and will co-star frequent Leigh collaborator Michele Austin (Another Year, Secrets & Lies). After Peterloo and 2014’s Mr. Turner, both period dramas, Hard Truths will see Leigh return to the modern day, with a drama described as “a tough but compassionate intimate study of family life.”
Other Leigh regulars returning for Hard Truths include producer Georgina Lowe, cinematographer Dick Pope, costume designer Jacqueline Durran, production designer Suzie Davis, composer Gary Yershon and casting director Nina Gold.
Secrets & Lies, which premiered in Cannes in 1996, winning the Palme d’Or, featured Jean-Baptiste as a well-off Black professional who seeks out her biological mother, a poor white factory worker living in East London, played by Brenda Blethyn. Jean-Baptiste was Oscar-nominated for her performance,...

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.
First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.
We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

When it comes to action cinema, David Leitch is one of the genre’s hottest directors working today. His first official film in the director’s chair was Atomic Blonde, but he also served as the uncredited co-director of the first John Wick. Since then, he’s directed Deadpool 2 and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. His latest film is another off-the-rails actioner. Bullet Train stars Brad Pitt as Ladybug, an assassin hired to do a job while confined on the fastest train in the world—and it’s packed with a horde of rivals. It’s a non-stop thrill ride of ultraviolence that puts Ladybug on a headlong collision course with his lethal adversaries.
Fortunately, Leitch has an intimate understanding of how action works because he began his cinematic career as a stuntman—specifically for Brad Pitt. Leitch was Pitt’s stunt double in Fight Club, Spy Game,...

This article contains spoilers for Operation Mincemeat.
Operation Mincemeat is now celebrated as “the most spectacular episode in the history of deception.” That is one of the commanding final sentences at the end of Netflix’s World War II drama, Operation Mincemeat. And barring the likely fictional story of the Trojan Horse, that assertion is fairly true.
As a plan to convince Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich’s espionage service, the Abwehr, that Britain and her allies would invade the Greek island of Sardinia—instead of the Italian one of Sicily—Operation Mincemeat persuasively put the Nazis on the wrong foot during a pivotal moment in 1943. So duped was the Führer about the threat to his Greek conquests and its nearby supply line in the Balkans that Hitler flatly refused Italian dictator Benito Mussolini when asked two months before the invasion to reinforce Sicily. It’s August 2020 and that can only mean one thing: HBO Max is about to enter Lovecraft Country.
Over the years HBO (and by the transitive property its new HBO Max streaming offshoot) has grown accustomed to debuting a buzzworthy new TV show or limited series every couple of months. For August 2020 that will almost certainly be Southern Gothic horror series Lovecraft Country. The J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele-produced thriller arrives on August 14 on HBO and HBO Max.
Other strong HBO Max originals arriving in August include the documentary Class Action Park (release date Tbd), Seth Rogen-starring comedy An American Pickle (Aug. 6), and finales for I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, Doom Patrol, and Perry Mason.
Of course, HBO Max is designed to house much of WarnerMedia’s content across many mediums. That means some recent movies on note like Jojo Rabbit (Aug. 1), Richard Jewell (Aug. 8), and Birds of Prey (Aug.

“‘The Commuter’ was a beauty to do,” beams composer Harry Gregson-Williams about his work on the standout episode of “Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams.” The veteran tunesmith handpicked the script because “it wasn’t too ridiculously supernatural,” and because its father-son storyline hit him close to home. He’s the father of two sons and three daughters, so “I know about those feelings.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Gregson-Williams above.

By the time he'd reached his early 30s, Liman's ambitions had finally paid off. His films Swingers and Go, released in 1996 and 1999, were made cheaply and recouped healthy profits. Urgent and effervescently told, they were the product of a young, talented filmmaker on the rise. No one’s is ever going to launch an Oscar campaign for Need for Speed, but there’s a case to be made for unpretentious, action-packed popcorn pleasures like the racing thriller. Aaron Paul gave a mesmerizing performance, the stunts were spectacular and, perhaps best of all, it proved that helmer Scott Waugh (Act of Valor) knows his way around a slick action vehicle. Now, Waugh is set to dive into the deep end for a much pricier venture – a $120 million sci-epic titled Inversion.
The script, from Bragi Schut (Season of the Witch) and David Arata (Spy Game), follows a young Chinese scientist and a street-smart American ex-patriate who team up and race against time to prevent a cataclysmic reversal of gravity, which would send entire cities and civilians falling into the sky to certain death.

Need For Speed director Scott Waugh will direct the sci-fi epic Inversion, about two heroes trying to save the world from an apocalyptic end. Production will begin next spring.
Inversion follows two unlikely heroes, a young Chinese scientist and a street smart American expat, on a frenzied journey across the globe to save Earth from an apocalyptic threat – a total reversal of gravity that causes whole cities and civilizations to uproot and plummet into the sky.
The pic teams up Bragi Schut (Season of the Witch) and David Arata (Children Of Men, Spy Game). On board to produce are Michael Nozik, Markus Barmettler, and Philip Lee.
No word on who's going to star, but personally, I'm excited to see a sci-fi blockbuster with an Asian star.
Scott Waugh's last movie, DreamWorks’ Need For Speed, starring Aaron Paul, grossed $200m worldwide.

For this week’s spotlight piece, I wanted to take a look at one of Hollywood’s absolute bigger stars. He’s about as A-list as the A-list gets…the name? Well, Brad Pitt of course. Not only is he a movie star with all capital letters (Movie Star!) and a top tier celebrity, he’s also developed into one of the industry’s best and most interesting actors as well. Pitt is the type of star that doesn’t rest on his laurels and often seems to attach himself to challenging material, something that will win the man an acting Oscar one day (he already won his first one last year for helping to produce Best Picture winner 12 Years a Slave). As high as he’s soared already, the best could still be to come. Pitt got his noticeable start in the business (after some uncredited acting jobs on...

Lots of films are dedicated to, or in memory of someone. But it's not always clear why. We've been finding out...
Back when Breaking Bad returned for its final batch of episodes in August 2013, it had a dedication at the end of it. The card read 'Dedicated to our friend Kevin Cordasco'. As it turned out, Kevin Cordasco was a 16-year old who had been battling cancer for seven years, who had met both Bryan Cranston and Vince Gilligan. Cordasco died before he could ever get to see the episode dedicated to him.
I found this such a moving story, that it got me wondering about the dedications that appear on films, and what the story behind them was. After all, the dedications are there for a reason. What I uncovered was some funny stories, mainly extremely sad ones, and some extremely moving dedications.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away almost every director in Hollywood shot their films on 35 mm film. Now, the switchover from film to digital photography is almost complete, with even old school diehards like Martin Scorsese making the transition (this fall's "Wolf of Wall Street" will be his first non-3D digital movie). Oddly enough, J.J. Abrams, a futuristically-minded filmmaker who seems to always be looking forward, has become a notable holdout, refusing to adopt the new technology. Even odder is that this will continue with his biggest project yet: Disney's "Star Wars: Episode VII." He's also recruited an old favorite as the movie's cinematographer. According to The Force.net, at an industry event in Los Angeles, the announcement was made that the amazingly talented Dan Mindel will be photographing the new galactic adventure (on actual film!). Mindel, who memorably collaborated with Tony Scott on "Enemy of the State,...

The most tense season of Dexter ever wrought is coming to Showtime when season 8 unwinds beginning on June 30th. Its the beginning of the end and today we’ve got new video to prepare you for the Dexterpocalypse. It answers the new question: Who Dr. Evelyn Vogel? And how will she completely change Dexter’s world?
So, what do we know so far about season 8? It’s the last season of the dramatic journey. Dexter’s fate, and Debra’s, must be decided for good and all. Has he become his own victim? Does his Dark Passenger overcome? Even if it doesn’t, how will Dex pay for his sins?
Today’s video introduces perhaps the most intriguing character we’ve heard of yet. Actress Charlotte Rampling will guest star in season 8 as as Dr. Evelyn Vogel. She’s a nuero-psychiatrist and authority on psychopaths. This sharp lady will change...

Now these are unlikely casting reports we hear today – namely, Robert Redford is in talks to join the cast of Captain America: The Winter Soldier as a “senior leadership role in S.H.I.E.L.D.” If it happens, Marvel will score big, as Redford has been sticking to acting exclusively in smaller indie films or his own directorial projects for the past few years; his last starring role in a Hollywood “mainstream” film (that he didn’t direct) was Tony Scott’s 2001 thriller, Spy Game. I never saw him as a superhero flick-actor, but, since Kevin Feige recently described The Winter Soldier as a “political thriller,” Redford should...

Last night I was trying to come up with some ideas on something I could do in conjunction with the release of Olympus Has Fallen and one idea was to come up with a list of the best political action thrillers. The problem is that word "action" really limits the number of films... at least when it came to the titles my fiancee could come up with last night. The word "action", in this case, almost seems to remove all meaning from the word "political". Sure, Olympus Has Fallen is based on a terrorist takeover at the White House, but just how political will it really be? White House Down and G.I. Joe: Retaliation are working with similar themes as trailers have already shown us, are they too political films? Certainly there is a nugget of politics in there, it's something that gives the narrative added weight over simply being about guns,...

Part of the Tony Scott: A Moving Target critical project. Go here for the project's description, index and links to project's other movement.
To the overabundance of text, sounds, images—and moving images—in Tony Scott, we reply with something like our own. So let me (try to) keep this (almost as) short as a Tony Scott shot. Scott’s death this past summer would elicit film critics’ own counterpart to American politics: opinions and generalizations bandied between two camps who were, as always, preaching to their respective choirs. And needless to say, such discourses would be about as useful, informative, and interesting as American politics. For Scott’s work was hardly encamped: the outward liberalism of Enemy of the State, perhaps Hollywood’s most overt attack on our surveillance nation and the Nsa, possible only before 9/11, concludes that only Nsa aspirants can take down the Nsa, just as Man on Fire,...
