One of the most famous scenes in Peter Weir's "Dead Poets Society" finds unorthodox prep school English teacher John Keating vilifying an essay written by the fictional Dr. J. Evans Pritchard that seeks to determine the excellence of individual poems via the application of a geometrical formula. The works of Byron and Shakespeare are measured in terms of their importance and degree of technical perfection; those that score highly on both counts cover a large area, and are thus considered truly "great." The horrified Keating therefore commands his teenage pupils to tear Pritchard's laughably square introduction out of their textbooks.

While he gained notoriety as an able supporting actor, he hit it big with The Thin Red Line and went on to perform in his most famous role to date The Passion of the Christ. The actor’s struggles while filming Mel Gibson’s Biblical epic is nothing short of a pop culture legend.
Caviezel has worked with a host of acclaimed filmmakers over the years. While he had early roles in Lawrence Kasdan’s Wyatt Earp and Gus Van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho, he gained prominence when he worked with the likes of Terrence Mallick, Ang Lee, and Tony Scott. Turns out “The Penguin” wasn’t the only spin-off of “The Batman” Matt Reeves wanted to bring to TV. In addition to the Arkham Asylum project developed by Antonio Campos and later shelved, “Boardwalk Empire” creator and “Tulsa King” showrunner Terence Winter also had plans on collaborating with Reeves on a series focusing around Gotham City Police Department. A similar series called “Gotham” starring Ben Mackenzie as a pre-Lieutenant Jim Gordan ran on Fox for five seasons, but in a recent interview on The Playlist’s “Bingeworthy” podcast, Winter said his version would have had a period element that set it apart.
“The idea was that we were going to do a 1970s cop show — something that felt like [Sidney Lumet’s 1981 crime drama] ‘Prince of the City,’ but in the Gotham City Police Department,” Winter said. “It was going to have that [‘70s] feel. It was going to be a...

DC Studios is busy creating a new cinematic universe, building the Dcu from the ashes of the former Dceu. Meanwhile, there are separate projects underway, including Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise and Todd Phillips’ Joker series, which is set to release its second installment in just a week.
Recent reports from The Hollywood Reporter indicate that two more well-known Batman villains, Bane and Deathstroke, are also getting their own solo films.
DC Studios, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, is developing a script by Matthew Orton, the writer of the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World film.
As of now, there is no director attached to the project. Both villains have appeared on the big screen before. Bane first debuted in Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, portrayed by Tom Hardy, whose performance earned a lot of praise. When the review embargo for Joker: Folie à Deux lifted, a couple of the trades - never ones to give spoilers a second thought - alluded to the movie's potentially divisive ending.
The suggestion was that Arthur Fleck dies, meaning he never becomes one of Batman's greatest enemies...something which hasn't ever seemed overly likely in the grounded world filmmaker Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have created.
Now, following an additional round of screenings, we have a better idea of why the director recently described the Joker sequel's conclusion as "unsettling" (alluding to reviews which took issue with Joker: Folie à Deux's final moments).
TV spots for the movie have shown an explosion in the courtroom but, according to what we've been told, the blast doesn't kill Arthur. Instead, he manages to flee and reunites with Lee Quinzel...who promptly breaks up with him upon realising his true self is Arthur,...

Jeff Bridges’ turn as Obadiah Stane – the former partner of Howard Stark and key villain of 2008’s Iron Man – set in motion what it meant for a big screen Marvel villain to be successful. Even 30+ movies and 15+ years on, Stane is a top-tier MCU baddie (and certainly better than Mickey Rourke’s Whiplash). While he was killed off in that initial MCU entry, Jeff Bridges is ready to return to the franchise, even giving a way it could happen.
Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Jeff Bridges said that when he originally signed on for Iron Man, the fate of Obadiah Stane was much different. With that, maybe the genre itself could lend to a return. “Well, when I read the script, Obadiah Stane falls in that big vat at the end, and in the script that I read and agreed to do, they pulled my suit out and opened it,...

When I hear the name Elizabeth McGovern, I immediately think of ’80s projects she worked on like Ordinary People, Racing with the Moon, Once Upon a Time in America, The Bedroom Window, and, most of all, She’s Having a Baby. Which probably gives away the fact that I have never watched Downton Abbey. McGovern has continued working steadily over the decades since the ’80s movies I mentioned, and these days is likely best known for playing the role of Cora Crawley on Downton Abbey and then reprising that role in two feature films. Next up: Variety reports that McGovern has signed on to join the cast of Anne Rice’s The Talamasca.
About a year and a half ago, we heard that AMC was developing a third TV series based on the works of Anne Rice, adding to the franchise they’ve been building out of the Vampire Chronicles...

Whether it’s because of the character’s bat-inspired get-up or his eerie rogue’s gallery comprised of killer clowns and mutant madmen, it’s only natural that horror fans tend to gravitate towards the Caped Crusader when it comes to choosing a favorite super-hero.
This genre influence extends to big-screen adaptations as well, with even Christopher Nolan’s hyper-realistic re-imagining of Batman featuring its fair share of horrific moments (especially in the first entry of the Dark Knight trilogy). However, I’d argue that one of the darkest and most entertaining Batman adaptations isn’t even in live action. Naturally, I’m referring to 2021’s two-part animated epic, Batman: The Long Halloween – a surprisingly gloomy super-hero story that I think will especially appeal to horror fans.
Despite their polarizing big screen adaptations, DC has quite the impressive track record when it comes to animated films based on their characters.

Here’s what we know so far: Anna Delvey couldn’t be found after night one of Dancing with the Stars because she was off crying in the bathroom. Apparently, the infamous subject of Netflix’s Inventing Anna read some negative comments online about her opening night cha cha and she just couldn’t take the pressure.
“I know what she did was really controversial and not right and I can never justify that for her or for anyone in her life,” Sosa said in a video posted on his Instagram. “No one deserves the amount of hate she’s getting right now. She deserves a second chance. She has stepped up to the plate.”
Okay, two things: no one twisted Delvey’s bedazzled ankle, I mean arm, to participate in the last great variety show on television. And two, she...

It suffered at the box office and failed to win any Oscars, but the 1994 prison drama is still seen by many as greater than The Godfather
The Shawshank Redemption is not the greatest film ever made. Heck, it’s not even one of best films of 1994 – the year of Pulp Fiction, Hoop Dreams, Chungking Express, Exotica, Quiz Show and the last two entries in Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Three Colours trilogy. And yet it continues to sit at or near the top of IMDb’s top 250, currently a shade above The Godfather and The Dark Knight, despite opening to polite reviews, middling box office and a resurgent Oscar campaign that nonetheless yielded zero awards. That’s an incredible comeback story, a video-and-cable-fueled long game as steady and methodical as, say, spending two decades chipping a hole in the prison walls with a rock hammer.

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
"I never liked the title of my own story, and don't to this day." Those are the words of prolific author Stephen King writing in the 2009 book "Stephen King Goes to the Movies." The movie and story in question is the 1994 classic "The Shawshank Redemption." King was attempting to explain why the film -- which is now considered by many to be one of the greatest movies ever made -- was a box office bomb in its day.
While it may be hard to believe, director Frank Darabont's stirring, emotional prison drama was indeed a huge disappointment upon its initial release. For those who weren't regular ticket buyers at the time of this movie's original theatrical run, that must seem unfathomable.

Batman has had quite a few actors don his dark suit and billowing cape. From Michael Keaton’s portrayal of the Dark Knight in Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) to Val Kilmer and then George Clooney’s portrayal of the vengeance-bent figure in Joel Schumacher’s films Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997), the list goes on.

Tim Burton is one of our most distinctive filmmakers. Whether you love him, hate him, or land somewhere in the middle, there is no denying that Burton has a voice and that voice has become rather valuable. From proving that "Batman" could be an A-tier superhero franchise to producing undeniable classics like "Beetlejuice," he's been making his mark on cinema for decades. Burton's biggest moment came in 2010 when his live-action take on "Alice in Wonderland" hit theaters. Divisive though the movie may be, it made box office history at the time -- and what's more, it laid the groundwork for the next decade of blockbuster filmmaking in Hollywood, particularly at Disney.

Christian Bale’s voice as Batman in the “Dark Knight” trilogy is infamous — and infamously bad for the vocal cords — but as it turns out, Joaquin Phoenix’s unhinged laugh as Arthur Fleck in the “Joker” films was also a bit of a health hazard.

Dawn of the Dead (which, somewhat ironically, was written by DC Studios boss James Gunn) was Zack Snyder's first feature, but 300 undoubtedly put him on the map as a filmmaker.
The movie, deemed unfilmable by some, was a surprise hit and gave the future Justice League helmer the chance to later tackle another tricky adaptation: Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen.
The likes of Terry Gilliam and Darren Aronofsky had tried and failed to do something with the property, and Snyder's Watchmen - which was strikingly comic accurate outside of the giant squid's absence - was released to mixed, albeit mostly positive, reviews in 2009.
Unfortunately, it grossed just $185 million on a then-sizeable $120 million budget. The movie hasn't quite managed to achieve cult classic status in the years since, but Watchmen still has more than its fair share of fans.

Grounded in reality and showing us a side of The Dark Knight we’ve never seen before in live-action, Matt Reeves’ The Batman came out swinging (literally), redefining what comic book movies could look like. Blending art noir with a touch of David Fincher’s Se7en and Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, it goes without saying that this isn’t your granddaddy’s Batman; it’s […]

This post contains spoilers for episode one of "The Penguin"
HBO's "The Penguin" has plunged fans into the heart of Gotham City, with a show that focuses on the travails of Colin Farrell's Penguin. The series expands the universe established by Matt Reeves in 2022's "The Batman," focusing on Penguin's power grab following the death of mob boss Carmine Falcone in the film. But Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight won't be showing up in this series, which is, as showrunner Lauren LeFranc previously explained to SFX, focused much more on "the grit and the muck and the grime" of Gotham City.
There's certainly plenty of that in the gothic industrial decay first seen in "The Batman." With that film, Reeves, production designer James Chinlund, and cinematographer Greig Fraser crafted a Gotham that felt simultaneously decrepit and somehow alluring, frequently lit by a warm tungsten glow that helped establish a suitably moody atmosphere.

Halloween is a fun time for costumes, creativity, and, sometimes, chaos! Some celebrities go all-out to make a statement, where they take their costumes to extreme levels of immersion. While many embrace the fun of the night, things don’t always go as planned, or so it seemed with Sean “Diddy” Combs, the hip-hop mogul who’s known for being larger than life, found himself in the middle of an altercation that took a turn for the worse during the holiday.

His choice of costume was a chilling portrayal of Heath Ledger’s iconic Joker from The Dark Knight, which added a layer of intensity to a heated encounter with actor Michael J. Ferguson. What began as Diddy’s attempt at embodying a beloved character almost escalated into something far more serious.

After publishing a page-turning memoir – Runaway Train: The Story of My Life So Far – actor Eric Roberts is letting skeletons out of closets with stories and reveals related to his lengthy and storied career. Roberts’ book covers a lot of ground. Still, one story about a missed opportunity with Martin Scorsese is making the rounds online. Luckily, our Editor-in-Chief, Chris Bumbray, is quite the bookworm for reading about Hollywood’s inner workings and secret stories and is currently thumbing through Roberts’ memoir.
In the book, Roberts talks about rejecting a primary role in Scorsese’s 1988 drama The Last Temptation of Christ, in which the filmmaker offered him the role of Jesus.
“So when I was asked by Marty Scorsese to audition for the role of Jesus in The Last Temptations of Christ, I thought, Here’s my chance to break out of the straightjacket of typecasting and work with a master,...

Actor Eric Roberts will make his debut on Dancing With the Stars for its 33rd season. The actor revealed that his appearance on the show actually had a long time coming. Fans have also taken to social media to praise the actor’s performance so far.
A Scheduling Conflict Kept The Actor From Appearing Earlier
For his debut on the series, Roberts was paired with professional dancer Britt Stewart. Performing a cha-cha act, the two danced to the tune of “Old Time Rock and Roll.”
This isn’t the first time Roberts was considered for a spot on the show. In a statement, he revealed that he was previously offered a chance to appear on the show 19 years prior.

When it comes to the film industry, it is safe to say that there is a lot of competition. While most of the time, actors point their competitive nature at people they barely know, sometimes, it can be directly pointed toward someone they are related to. Such has been the case for siblings, Eric Roberts and Julia Roberts, who have not had the easiest time existing in the same space.

Season 33 of Dancing with the Stars was already generating lots of chatter before the first pair of Danskins hit the ballroom Tuesday. First, we got some good news: the popular pommel horse guy from the Olympics was going to compete this season!
But it went downhill from there. Former pro dancer Artem Chigvintsev drummed up some not-so- pleasant headlines for his (soon-to-be previous?) employer by getting arrested after a domestic violence incident. And then there was the blowback from DWTS‘ decision to cast Anna Delvey, the so-called fake heiress and convicted con artist who was the subject of the Netflix show Inventing Anna. The View, in particular, talked some major trash and questioned whether the Russia-born newsmaker ever paid off her debts.
Fortunately, that’s all ancient history now; Chigvintsev isn’t on this season (and it’s doubtful he will ever return), while the women of The View sort...

Gary Oldman recently told IndieWire that he believes Sirius Black wasn’t in the “Harry Potter” film franchise enough. The actor debuted as the fan-favorite character in 2004’s “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” but that movie marked the rare “Potter” film to give Sirius significant screen time. He was just a cameo in “Goblet of Fire” and “Deathly Hallows Part 2,” while his role in “Order of the Phoenix” was mainly just to show up and die.
“I love, Sirius,” Oldman said. “He wasn’t in it enough. He turned up and then he went through the veil.”
The upcoming “Harry Potter” television series on Max will surely have more room to give Black screen time, not that Oldman thinks he’ll be back in the role.

What if Batman and Joker decided to end their co-dependent relationship all for once? That’s exactly what happened in the merely 14-page fanfic, titled Batman: The Deal. The short story explores Batman and his archnemesis Joker’s final duel and the ending shocked many DC fans. Many fans found it abysmal despite becoming one of Batman’s most-read fanfics.

Critics Don’t Care about the Whopping Amount of Time Netflix Took to Greenlight Joey King’s ‘Uglies’
The highly anticipated Netflix movie, Uglies, based on Scott Westerfeld’s 2005 novel, has left fans and critics underwhelmed. Despite being Joey King’s passion project, which she pitched to Netflix for years, the film’s execution failed to deliver.
Critics and reviewers weren’t so impressed with the unengaging plot, ranking this movie abysmally at the bottom. The actress expressed her love for the books, stating she had been pitching the movie to the streaming platform for years. Unfortunately, this toil of several years failed to reflect on screen and the film’s review took a nosedive.

The Joker may be The Dark Knight’s most iconic nemesis, but the Penguin is one of his most memorable. Ever since Danny DeVito climbed from the sewers of Gotham with his flippered hands and black drool oozing down his chin, Oswald Cobblepot has held a place on the Mount Rushmore of live-action Batman villain portrayals. Colin Farrell’s turn as the iconic character couldn’t be more different from the twisted version audiences saw in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, but its equally as effective.

The Best Christopher Nolan Movie Almost Turned Into a Horror Film That Was Turned Down By Will Smith
Christopher Nolan has always defied the limitations of art and science by playing outside the sandbox to develop a genre entirely of his own making. No two Nolan movies have ever been similar in that respect and the director’s obsession with the complex nature of time has lent him the ability to craft stories that are more original than most films over the last couple of decades.

Beyond the insidious psychopathy of The Dark Knight, the war homage of Dunkirk, the sci-fi epic of Interstellar, and the Oscar-winning existential threat of Oppenheimer lies a visionary genius who captures the magic of humanity through all its peaks and valleys. The only genre that has escaped a spot in Nolan’s filmography is horror – although the director intends to soon make it right.

The Penguin Review: Colin Farrell Is Excellent In A Dark Series That Probably Should've Been A Movie
TV and film are different mediums. This isn't a radical thing to say, it's a simple fact. And yet, at some point, producers and showrunners got it into their heads to structure TV shows like very long movies. I personally don't have a problem with long movies — I will rewatch David Fincher's "Zodiac" any day of the week, gang! — but when I sit down to watch a TV series, I want a TV series. I don't want a seemingly endless film. "The Penguin," a new HBO series spun-off from Matt Reeves' excellent "The Batman," is the latest example of a show trying to be an 8-hour movie, and it suffers because of it. The pacing is detrimental to the series as a whole, so much so that I found myself losing interest as the story plodded along without a single standout episode.
Think back to the best shows of the so-called "peak TV era.

Well that’s Friday the 13th documentary Crystal Lake Memories…..but it’s also today’s video about Blade Trinity….where we breakdown a long and twisted story that involves a director hiring a biker gang to protect him from his lead actor, the possible birth of Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, and multiple lawsuits. Thank goodness all this ended up producing a universally loved Blade sequel we can all enjoy for years to come.

Néstor Carbonell has won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his turn in FX’s Shōgun.
“This is overwhelming,” he told Deadline after his win. “When you work as an actor as long as I have, the role is a gift. Some years are good, some years you try to piece them together. As soon as [tonight’s over], I hop on a plane to finish directing an episode of Law & Order. So this is incredibly meaningful to me.”
Shortly after Carbonell clinched the award, Shōgun‘s casting team won the Emmy for Casting for a Drama Series. The project’s costume team also celebrated a win for Period Costumes for a Series. (You...
