- The recruits are instructed about personal hygiene the Fifties Army style, using a towel wetted in their eating kit on their bare arses in open air. Sergeant Allistair Rae now takes charge of their actual drill, constantly making a rudely shouted fuzz about roll call, hair-style. Next their physical condition is assessed, the exercise prospect makes more bad lads doubt whether to stand the though regime or leave, staff tries to motivate them to stay. From now on, barracks inspections carry physical sanctions. Next nightmare is the provost sergeant, Jeff Edwards, camp jailer and 'beasting' (discipline) master, in charge of reeducation without gloves, foolishly braved by temperamental Luke Brown, still missing his twin Alan, which soon lands him in the cell twice, underpants only, followed by 24 hours fatigues (penal chores). Corporal Nauyokas's section one passes muster at the sergeant's barracks inspection, corporal Murray's section two is chewed out for dirt and individual offenders get sent outside so the provost can enjoy punishing them with humiliating exercises. After finding three cases of athlete's foot, Sergeant Rae performs intimate hygiene inspection, underpants on ankles. Cummings finds out skivvying (malingering) is a crime, and punished the provost's way. A collective version of the shell-carrying, which is a common individual punishment, proves a competitive moral booster.—KGF Vissers
