Queer And Challengers Director Luca Guadagnino Reportedly Set To Helm Sgt. Rock Movie For DC Studios
Luca Guadagnino may not seem like the most obvious fit to helm a comic book/superhero movie, but the filmmaker is believed to be in talks with DC Studios to direct an upcoming Dcu project.
Jeff Sneider first mentioned that Guadagnino - whose latest film, Queer, is screening at the Venice Film Festival - was "being courted for a future Dcu project" in his newsletter, and Nexus Point News later weighed in, claiming to reveal the project he's in talks to direct.
According to the site, Guadagnino is set to helm a Sgt. Rock movie, and his Challengers and Queer collaborator Justin Kuritzkes is on board to pen the script. The project is said to be a "period piece set during World War II."
We've been hearing whispers of a potential Sgt. Rock movie for quite a while, and attempts to get a film based on the character off the...

Earlier in the year, when it was discovered that 2024 would be the year of not one but two brand new films made by the talented Luca Guadagnino, I made a prediction that Queer would be the real knock out next to the more forgettable Challengers. Now that I've seen both of the films it's time to admit - my prediction was wrong. It turns out its the other way around and Challengers is the winner. Luca Guadagnino's Queer is premiering at the 2024 Venice Film Festival in the Main Competition, the same festival where most of the Italian filmmaker's previous films Suspiria, Bones and All, I Am Love, A Bigger Splash, as well as his doc Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams premiered. He's back in Venice again with what has been described as his most personal work yet, an adaptation of William S. Burroughs' very queer novel of the same name -...

Acclaimed Italian director Luca Guadagnino earned an enthusiastic response for his latest film “Queer” at its world premiere at the prestigious Venice Film Festival. The audience gave the film a long standing ovation lasting 11 minutes and 44 seconds in the Salo Grande theater.
“Queer” tells the story of William Lee, an American man played by Daniel Craig, living in 1950s Mexico City. Lee seeks a meaningful relationship as he adjusts to his new home. He forms a connection with Eugene Allerton, a student portrayed by newcomer Drew Starkey.

Daniel Craig delivers a career-best performance in Luca Guadagnino’s romantic drama “Queer,” playing a gay American expat in 1950s Mexico City. The drama, with its explicit love scenes, swept up a packed theater at its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Tuesday night, earning a 9-minute standing ovation.
When the applause began, Craig looked flushed and misty-eyed as he hugged Guadagnino. The crowd chanted “Luca! Luca! Luca!” while the ovation continued, with each actor coming down the Sala Grande steps from where they sat in the balcony to bow individually. During his turn, Craig blew kisses to the crowd as his wife, Rachel Weisz, smiled proudly.
When Craig and Starkey at last embraced, Guadagnino — and the rest of the audience — erupted in cheers as the two gripped each other in celebration. Pedro Almodóvar, whose new film “The Room Next Door” received the longest standing ovation of the fest so far with 17 minutes,...

Ever since 2017’s Call Me By Your Name, Luca Guadagnino has been one of the premiere directors to watch. With a bold remake of Dario Argento’s Suspiria, a cannibal love story in Bones and All and sex-serving tennis drama Challengers, the guy hasn’t left the eye of film lovers. Now, the next feature from Guadagnino, Queer, has been acquired by A24 ahead of its Venice Film Festival premiere.
This news comes just as the Venice Film Festival launches, with Queer joining Challengers, Bones and All, Suspiria, A Bigger Splash, I Am Love, and Guadagnino’s debut, 1999’s The Protagonist, as films the Italian director has brought to the famed fest. However, unlike any of those other works, Queer marks the first time that Guadagnino will work with A24.

To close out the season, Cinespia will also be having an indoor Halloween screening of the original 1977 version of “Suspiria” from Dario Argento on October 31 at The Orpheum Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles.
“What better way to embrace the spooky season than by watching horror classics under the stars at a cemetery?” said John Wyatt, founder of Cinespia. “We’re also thrilled to return to The Orpheum for the second consecutive year, hosting our fans on Halloween night for...

Alien is one of the most beloved classic horror movies and no classic comes out of thin air. The film was the culmination of two horror trends from the 1970s. One of these trends was retro at the time but the other was very modern.
‘Alien’ was a response to horror films from the 1950s
Science fiction and horror have been soulmates since Mary Shelley published Frankenstein in 1818. While science fiction can help us understand how new technologies could change the world, horror can show us what happens when those technologies go wrong — whether they be nuclear energy, androids, or space travel. The dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II caused lots of anxiety over new innovations, paving the way for a boom in science fiction horror films during the 1950s.
Most of these films were creature features, such as Robot Monster, Creature from the Black Lagoon,...

It’s a match made in heaven for a lot of Oscar watchers who are obsessed with actresses (that Venn diagram is a circle). Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton star together in director Pedro Almodóvar‘s upcoming English-language feature film debut, “The Room Next Door.” Both women are Oscar winners — Almodóvar too — but it’s been a while since any of them have competed for the academy’s top honors. We’ll learn more about the film after it premieres at the Venice Film Festival on September 2, but until then, where does it stand in the Oscar race?
Exploring the friendship between Martha (Swinton) and Ingrid (Moore) and Martha’s rift with her daughter, “The Room Next Door’s” highest hopes as of this writing are for its actresses. Summer is winding to a close, though the blistering sun has not yet received the memo. That means the final days of vacationing or summer road trips are in order. Of course, horror has taught us the myriad of ways that the open road can induce abject terror and stress; flat tires are the least of your summer worries in horror.

Lamberto Bava’s Demons is one cool cucumber. It’s often hard to tell whether the film is satirizing the cold excess of 1980s horror cinema or indulging it (probably both), and that ambiguity informs even the slacker sequences with latent tension. The premise is simple even for an ultraviolent ghoulie feature: Folks are invited to a mysterious theater for a screening of a horror film and proceed to turn into demons that tear apart the remaining survivors, who soon turn, of course, into more demons.
The Evil Dead is certainly an inspiration, which reflects a cyclical payback of sorts, as Sam Raimi was indebted to Suspiria, and Dario Argento, an executive producer and co-writer of this film, borrowed back on his initial loan, upping the ante even further on the fabulous gore and bladdery effects. This self-referential sense of the narrative eating its own tale is intentional and essential...

Deep in the forests of Germany, there is a resort, a quaint getaway nestled right at the bottom of the Bavarian Alps. Step out of your car, and you immediately feel like you’re stepping into a postcard; you half expect men in lederhosen, hoisting large steins of Pilsner, to greet you as walk toward the lobby. It’s so picturesque that you might not notice the strange noise emanating from within the woods right next to the guest houses. It’s faint, but very shrill. Something feels weird about that sound,...

The New York Film Festival said Luca Guadagnino’s Queer will be the Spotlight Gala of the 62nd New York Film Festival, making its U.S. premiere.
The adaptation of William S. Burroughs’s novel, scripted by Justin Kuritzkes, stars Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, Michael Borremans, Andra Ursuta, and David Lowery. Written in the early 1950s but not published until 1985, Queer has come to be considered a canonical work in the career of the Beat Generation author and a cornerstone of transgressive gay literature.
“Luca Guadagnino is one of contemporary cinema’s most versatile filmmakers, and one of its biggest risk-takers,” said NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim. “Queer is his most fearless, inventive, and surprising film, one that brings its subcultural world to brilliant life and creates the role of a lifetime for a tremendous Daniel Craig.”

It was supposed to be the Summer of Shyamalan. After spending the last decade scratching and clawing his way out of director's jail with one self-financed hit at the box office after another, M. Night Shyamalan must've had 2024 circled on the calendar of his comeback tour for quite some time. The one-two punch of "Old" and "Knock at the Cabin" felt like a return to the auteur's minimalist roots, but a quirk of timing meant moviegoing audiences would be introduced to the next generation of Shyamalans in little more than a two-month span. In June, his younger daughter Ishana unveiled her directorial debut while his eldest, Saleka, comes to the forefront this August with her acting debut in M. Night's latest. "The Watchers" ultimately produced an uneven, if promising glimpse into the future. As for the latter, well, let's just say "Trap" likely won't win over any new converts nor rank among his greatest efforts.

Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” follow-up transports audiences back in time.
Guadagnino’s “Queer,” written by “Challengers” screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes and adapted from William S. Burroughs’ 1985-published novella, stars Daniel Craig as an American expat and war veteran who begins a romance with a younger man (Drew Starkey). The film, as expected, will debut in competition at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, and of today’s surprises was the confirmed casting of pop star Omar Apollo with a top-billed role in the film.
“Queer” follows William Lee (Craig), now in his late 40s and in 1940s Mexico City, reminiscing about his past life among American expatriate college students and barkeeps eking out their own living on part-time jobs and GI benefits. Lee ends up chasing a young student named Eugene Allerton. For his novella, “Naked Lunch” writer Burroughs allegedly based the Allerton character on a man named Adelbert Lewis Marker, a discharged...

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
The Dead Don’t Hurt (Viggo Mortensen)
Though The Dead Don’t Hurt gradually becomes Vivienne’s story as Holger disappears to fight, his presence still defines the film in strange ways. While Mortensen certainly looks younger than 65 and I’m not one of those people who busts out a calculator to determine what is or isn’t an appropriate age-gap relationship, Mortensen casting himself opposite Krieps in the romantic (even action hero) lead role he’s clearly too old for (beyond maybe financing requirements) reeks of ego. Maybe this wouldn’t matter as much if he dramatized these proceedings in a way more compelling than just its interesting conceptual ideas of immigrants in the west going through the passage of time together.

Underway now through July 16, Severin Films‘ annual summer sale is the most ambitious in the company’s history. The Dario Argento’s Opera five-disc box set — which you can preview in an exclusive clip below — is the headliner, but there are nine more releases in addition to exclusive merchandise and big savings on past inventory.
Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Severin Summer Sale…
Opera
In my eyes — held open with needles, of course — Opera is Argento’s last true masterpiece. While the Italian maestro attained fleeting moments of greatness later in his oeuvre, Opera is the last of his efforts that can hold its own alongside his earlier, career-defining work like Suspiria, Deep Red, Tenebrae, and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage.
Co-written by Argento and frequent collaborator Franco Ferrini, the giallo stars Cristina Marsillach as Betty, a young opera singer whose big break...

Once upon a time in 1970s Texas, a group of filmmakers traveled to a remote farmhouse to shoot what they hoped would be the Citizen Kane of porno flicks. Only one of them would leave that quaint rural residence alive. Cut to: that same “Final Girl” close to a decade later, when she has not only endured another round of related homicides but has been christened Hollywood’s Next Big Thing. Sandwiched in between this fairy tale’s beginning and ending is the story of another woman who also yearns for fame,...

Fresh off the success of “Challengers,” director Luca Guadagnino has wasted no time in moving forward with his next film, “After the Hunt.” The project, which boasts an impressive ensemble cast, has officially entered pre-production in London.
On Saturday, cast members Julia Roberts, Chloë Sevigny, and Ayo Edebiri shared a group photo on social media, seemingly from the first day of pre-production. Sevigny captioned her Instagram post with “#backtowork After The Hunt directed by the great Luca Guadagnino,” while also sharing dinner photos with the director.
The cast photo also included co-stars Andrew Garfield, Michael Stuhlbarg, Lio Meheil, Ariyan Kassam, and Will Price, suggesting that a table read for the film had taken place. Edebiri’s post humorously included a screenshot of Guadagnino urging her to share the photo, emphasizing “Not a story!!!”

Much has been made about how filmmaker Ti West has reinvented and refreshed the slasher genre by paying homage to the classics in his A24 trilogy X, Pearl and the upcoming MaXXXine. His leading lady, Mia Goth, agrees with the praise and adds that the back-to-back-to-back gigs have also reshaped something else — her career.
“The work has given me a whole new level of confidence that I hadn’t had before,” the 30-year-old actress told The Hollywood Reporter while standing outside the Tcl Chinese Theatre minutes before the June 24 world premiere. “It changed me forever.”
Specifically, Goth points to playing the title character Pearl in the technicolor gore-fest that served as the prequel to 2022’s X and was released the same year. X found Goth playing Maxine, a young porn actress who in 1979 accompanies pals from the adult film industry to a remote Texas farmhouse, where an elderly couple is revealed to be savage hosts.

Look out, Benoit Blanc! Jennifer Lawrence is prepping an original murder mystery feature at AppleTV+. After studios fought for the package like tossing a bone to a pack of rabid hounds, Apple Original Films emerged as the victor of The Wives, a film project starring and produced by Jennifer Lawrence.
Much like the film’s genre, details about the plot remain a mystery. However, word around the Hollywood water cooler suggests the film takes inspiration from the Real Housewives reality franchise. The script was written by Michael Breslin and Patrick Foley (Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical).
If you walked outside your house and threw a rock, it would likely land on the site of one of Jennifer Lawrence’s upcoming projects. She has six ventures in various stages of development and production, including Sue, a biopic about the Hollywood super-agent Sue Mengers. Initially, Mengers was a secretary to William Morris,...

Spoilers for "The Boys" season 4 ahead.
It's well-established on "The Boys" by now that Homelander (Antony Starr) was raised like a lab rat. As a test tube baby created by the Vought International corporation to be the world's greatest superhero, he grew up around scientists who were cold and terrified of him. To test the limits of his power, he had to endure torturous "exams" like being set on fire and or having a drill pressed against his head. Both Homelander's powers and his evil are the result of nurture, not nature.
His longing for love is why Homelander lets Vought execs like Madelyn Stillwell (Elisabeth Shue) and Stan Edgar (Giancarlo Epositio) wield power over him, and why when Homelander met his biological father, Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), he approached like a simpering puppy. It's also the reason that Homelander wants to be involved in the life of his own son,...

Fresh off her turn in Marvel‘s maligned “Madame Web,” Dakota Johnson is returning to indies with Christy Hall’s feature directorial debut “Daddio.” Sean Penn co-stars as a lone-wolf taxi driver and old-guard New Yorker who picks up Johnson’s character, Girlie, from JFK. On the journey back to Brooklyn, they share a heart-to-heart about life, love, sex, relationships, and more.
For Johnson, working with Hall was no different from working with more established filmmakers. “Well, it’s different every time. It depends on the person,” Johnson told IndieWire. “Sometimes you would never guess that it was somebody’s first feature, and sometimes it can be really challenging.” Production took place in just 16 days and primarily on a soundstage. Not only does Johnson star, but she also serves as a producer, alongside her TeaTime Pictures co-founder Ro Donnelly.
“This is, it’s just such a gem of a project.

Created by Joko Anwar, the Netflix’s anthology series, Nightmares and Daydreams, is made of seven seemingly disconnected episodes. But with each passing story, it becomes clear that all of them are connected via the shenanigans emerging from the mythological realm of Agartha. As the legend goes, Agartha is a kingdom that exists somewhere between Earth’s surface and hell, I guess. I’m sure you are familiar with the concept of the hollow Earth theory that has been popularized by MonsterVerse. So, think of it that way. Agartha is a world between worlds and is apparently home to demi-gods, also known as “asuras.” This connecting thread doesn’t become all that apparent until the seventh and last episode. But since there are subtle and not-so-subtle hints to the existence of Agartha, and how its inhabitants influence the surface dwellers, bear with me as I go episode by episode to...

Netflix’s popularity can be attributed to many different movies and shows, but, in my opinion, their horror anthology series Black Mirror was integral to their overnight success because I can remember obsessing over its brutal satire like it was yesterday. Then, the streaming platform’s Indian branch made Lust Stories, and the idea of provocative storytelling featuring Bollywood stars felt promising. Love, Death, and Robots became everyone’s favorite almost instantly, with its vivid style and precise storytelling. And then things sort of went downhill with absolutely trashy products like Ghost Stories, Ludo, Paava Kadhaigal, Pitta Kathalu, Ankahi Kahaniya, Ajeeb Dastans, Feels Like Ishq, Ray, and Lust Stories 2. The only diamond in the rough was Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. And it seems like Netflix has learned the right lesson from it and has brought another anthology series inspired by the works of an acclaimed director: Joko Anwar’s Nightmares and Daydreams.

“Being good or bad isn’t a choice a woman gets to make by herself,” filmmaker Elizabeth Sankey narrates in her spellbinding new documentary, “Witches.” It’s an incisive perspective on an age-old cinematic question that’s never had a good enough answer: “Are you a good witch or a bad witch?” as Glinda once asked. As Sankey might see it, the question itself put Dorothy in danger.
Our ever-shifting sense of women’s autonomy resonates in countless contexts, and that’s worth keeping front of mind throughout this feature-length consideration of postpartum mental health and the historic persecution of women. Weaving personal experience and keen anthropological theory into a lush and haunting tapestry of magical portrayals from pop culture, Sankey achieves an intricate archival exposition backed with tremendous feeling. The Madame Web actress made her name known all around the world with the erotic drama trilogy Fifty Shades of Grey (2015 - 2018) and the horror film Suspiria (2018). However, Dakota Johnson is also very much of a comedy performer.
Although the romantic comedy How to Be Single (2016) and the dramedy The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019), that starred the actress, weren’t quite successful, the 2022 movie that is now holding the second place on HBO’s global top is truly a must-watch.

Sometimes horror filmmakers go far from merely scaring the audience by shocking images and loud sounds and turn their films into pure art. These visuals are often beyond the imaginable limits as they both please the eye and creep you out even more.
Here are 7 horrors, picked by Reddit due to their outstanding visual part.
1. The Cell (2000)
Indeed, this sci-fi horror “was a visual feast”, as voiced by Redditor @Matthew-_-Black. The story of a comatose serial killer put in an experimental virtual reality treatment in order to locate his last victim is here enhanced by sleek futuristic design elements.
2. Mandy (2018)
Nicolas Cage’s flick about an enraged man on his journey towards bloody revenge is full of spectacular depictions of a nightmarish cult life and their supernatural and psychedelic experience. It’s highly praised for its unique red-colored visual style.
3. Suspiria (1977)
“It's so vivid and colorful,” admits @BrokeFartFountain about Dario Argento's cultish film.

You haven’t lived until you’ve seen a movie musical where the words “mammoplasty, vaginoplasty, rhinoplasty” play out in song. Nor have you lived until you’ve seen that same movie musical in which Selena Gomez says the words “My pussy still hurts when I think of you.” And you’ve never seen a movie musical at all about transness that takes as bold of swings as Jacques Audiard‘s “Emilia Pérez,” which is stylistically unforgettable while missing the crucial element that makes any movie musical work: Actually good, memorable songs.
Audiard is the 72-year-old French director known ever for dipping into other worlds and genres that are far from his own as a cis white guy from Europe. His 2015 Palme d’Or winner “Dheepan” was a story of Tamil refugees who’ve fled Sri Lankan civil war for Paris. “The Sisters Brothers” was his attempt at a western...

Puppet Combo are once again taking it old-school in more ways than one. Originally released in 2019 on itch.io, the developer has announced that their PS2 Survival Horror-inspired title The Glass Staircase will be headed to Steam, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch on May 24.
Described as “a short-form old-school psychological horror game”, The Glass Staircase takes place in 1922, inside a dilapidated estate converted into an orphanage. Four girls attempt to survive long enough to complete their chores and find a new home. As these things go, unknowable horrors have punctuated the history of the house, and they’re about to learn about them the hard way.
Rather than focusing on grotesque slasher horror, The Glass Staircase is a surreal and atmospheric game, inspired by PS2 survival horror titles like Silent Hill 2 and the GameCube classic Eternal Darkness. Of course, you have to toss in those classic 80s Italian horror movies such as The Beyond,...

The year of 2022 was quite fruitful for horror features, as we saw such genre’s gems, as Barbarian, The Menu, Smile and Scream. However, they all didn’t make enough noise to be everywhere on the Net not only at the time, but over the course of these 2 years too.
There is one movie which obviously managed to do so, given the enormous amount of memes, viral videos and Halloween costumes inspired by it. It’d be surprising to hear that it appears to be a sequel, but it definitely overhyped the original movie.
Its plot focuses on the life of a mentally ill young woman forced to live with her abusive parents and her husband at the farm. She can’t stand this way of life and lusts for the glamorous life of a chorus girl or a film star, but her dreams don't seem to come true.
