Worthy of Hitchcock
Alfred Hitchcock made a great movie of Patricia Highsmith's first novel, Strangers on a Train, but somehow never got around to The Talented Mister Ripley. Veteran screenwriter and director Steven Zailian corrects this historical mistake by rendering Ripley's origin story in a manner worthy of Hitchcock. We see Hitchcock's influence in the beautiful black and white cinematography, the emphasis on character and suspense over action, the attentiveness to the particulars of different locations and the overall command of details such as Ripley's veneration of beautiful objects and the precision (and occasional oversights) of Ripley's plotting. Andrew Scott is superb in the lead role, but all of the performances are exquisite. The series is also quite faithful to the original book. I think this is the best possible version of Highsmith's book, and I hope the creators make four more seasons--one for each sequel of the "Ripliad".
