Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss Best Picture and the lack of an outright frontrunner.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! *Mr. Burns voice* Release the hounds! We’ve officially rang the bell on Oscar season — even though we’ve been ringing the bell since our ridiculously early Oscar picks in March — and this is already shaping up to be one of the most formless Phase 1s we’ve had in quite a while. In keeping with the theme of the 2024 presidential election, the buzzword I’ve heard from so many people about the race so far is “weird.” Last year at this time, many had already seen the 10 movies that would wind up getting nominated for Best Picture, with “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” leading the charge...

Variety has announced its 10 Actors to Watch for 2024, naming breakthrough and up-and-coming actors whose stars are on the rise. Over the years, the list has included more than 35 Oscar winners and nominees, including Viola Davis, Mahershala Ali, Timothée Chalamet and Brie Larson. The10 to Watch lists have been a Variety staple since 1997, with Actors to Watch highlighted since 1998, with many performers from awards season prospects.
This year is no exception, including actors in such high-profile upcoming films as “Emilia Pérez,” “Queer,” “A Complete Unknown” and “Gladiator II.”
The honorees will be profiled in the Oct. 17 issue of Variety and feted at a special brunch on Oct. 20 at the Newport Beach Film Festival Honors presented by Visit Newport Beach. Says Gregg Schwenk, CEO and co-founder of the fest, “The Newport Beach Film Festival is immensely proud to host Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch. Variety has a long history of identifying...

In 2010 the academy reintroduced the preferential ballot to decide the Best Picture winner. Over the ensuing 14 years, there has been a difference between the winners of that award and Best Director at six Academy Awards ceremonies. Prior to this such splits were fairly rare. Why the change? (Scroll down for our updated 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Director.)
At the Oscars, the winner of Best Picture is determined by a weighted ballot and the outcomes of the other 22 races, including Best Director, are decided by a popular vote. While voters simply select one nominee in those other races, when it comes to Best Picture they are asked to rank all the nominees. If one contender garners more than 50% of the first-place votes, it wins. If, however, no nominee crosses that threshold, the film with the fewest first-place votes is eliminated, with its ballots being reapportioned to the second-place pick. This process...

Almost all of the Best Actor winners at this century’s 23 Academy Awards ceremonies have ticked at least one of these two boxes: they were over 40 or portraying a real-life fellow. The only exceptions: Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) and Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) who were 36 and 39 respectively when they won for playing fictional characters.
In 2024, Cillian Murphy, 47, won for his portrayal of scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer in the Best Picture champ “Oppenheimer.” He was the sixth Best Actor winner in a decade to prevail for playing a real person after Will Smith (“King Richard”), Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), Gary Oldman (“The Darkest Hour”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Revenant”), and Eddie Redmayne;. The four to win for fictional parts were Brendan Fraser, Anthony Hopkins (“The Father”), Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker), and Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”). Ten years ago, Scoot McNairy’s first collaboration with Mackenzie Davis on Halt and Catch Fire had just completed its first season on AMC, and the “little drama that could” gradually became both a critical darling and cult hit. Set in the personal computing and internet revolutions of the ‘80s and ‘90s, McNairy’s Gordon Clark and Davis’ Cameron Howe played computer geniuses who had great respect for each other’s intellects, and together with their impermanent romantic and business partners of Kerry Bishé’s Donna Clark and Lee Pace’s Joe MacMillan, the quartet’s interpersonal relationships continuously evolved amid the ever-changing landscape of the industry they helped shape.
McNairy and Davis’ characters often had a very brother-and-sister dynamic, so the Halt fan base was rocked when James Watkin’s Speak No Evil dropped its first trailer last April, unveiling McNairy and Davis’ married couple of Ben and Louise Dalton.

It doesn’t sound like HBO thinks Tim Robinson should leave, after all. In fact, the premium network just ordered a new series from the comedian, titled “The Chair Company.”
The half-hour comedy, which was granted a pilot order in April, follows a man named William Ronald Trosper (Robinson), who finds himself “investigating a far-reaching conspiracy” after an embarrassing incident at work.
Robinson and Zach Kanin, who created “I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson” together, will serve as writers and executive producers for “The Chair Company.” Adam McKay and Todd Schulman also executive produce for HyperObject Industries, with Igor Srubshchik serving as an EP and Andrew DeYoung directing and executive producing the pilot.
The supporting cast for the series includes Lake Bell as Barb Trosper, Sophia Lillis as Natalie Trosper, Will Price as Seth Trosper and Joseph Tudisco as Mike Santini. Lou Diamond Phillips also guest stars in...

Toronto: Actress-Centric ‘The Room Next Door’ and ‘Nightbitch’ Premiere, Face Different Awards Paths
Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door and Marielle Heller’s Nightbitch, the two most highly-anticipated films that screened at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday night, are in some ways very similar: both are adaptations of novels by filmmakers who have been bringing quality films to TIFF for years, and both center on complex female protagonists played by first-rate actresses. But their receptions at the fest, and their awards prospects moving forward, couldn’t be more different.
The Room Next Door, which is Spaniard Almodóvar’s English-language feature directorial debut, came to Toronto via the Venice Film Festival, and was unveiled here just hours after the Venice jury bestowed upon the film its highest honor, the Golden Lion — which is somehow the first top prize from a major film festival that the 74-year-old auteur has ever been awarded.

Its a dog-eat-dog world for “Nightbitch” at TIFF.
Marielle Heller’s long-awaited dramedy had its world premiere on Saturday at the Toronto International Film Festival, exactly five years after her previous film, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” debuted at the Canadian fest. Heller was joined by producers, author Rachel Yoder (whose book the film is based on) and stars Amy Adams and Scoot McNairy. Twin child actors Arleigh Patrick Snowden and Emmett James, who collectively play the role of the “son,” charmed the audience with stuffed dogs and a message: “We hope you enjoy the movie.”

Over the last six years, New Jersey has become a top destination for film, television and, most recently, reality program production.
The state’s Film and Digital Media Tax Credit Program launched in late 2018 under the leadership of Gov. Phil Murphy after being indefinitely suspended in 2010. Initially, under Murphy’s tax credit initiative, the annual cap for film and television production was $75 million. Productions earned credits for up to 30% of eligible expenses and up to 35% in certain more remote areas of New Jersey. Today the tax credit has expanded to $430 million per year through 2039 and in an effort to create a more inclusive workforce, and offers an additional incentive (2% or 4%) to productions that meet certain diversity criteria.
Murphy says that reinstating the state’s film tax incentive was a no brainer.

Todd Phillips adds a dark musical twist to “Joker: Folie à Deux” (which premiered at the Venice Film Festival to mixed reviews), giving Joaquin Phoenix’s delusional Arthur/Joker a partner in crime with Lady Gaga’s equally disturbed Lee/Harley Quinn and an escape valve through song and dance.
The “Joker” sequel picks up several years later with the failed comedian and anarchist facing the death penalty for multiple murders and meeting soul mate Harley while incarcerated in Arkham State Hospital. The film plays as surreal musical noir, taking some visual inspiration from Francis Ford Coppola’s “One From the Heart.” There are courtroom histrionics, rioting at Arkham, and bedlam in the streets, wrapped around Arthur’s musical romance with Harley. He croons “When You’re Smiling” and “For Once in My Life,” she encourages him with “Get Happy,” and they host a demented “Sonny & Cher”-inspired variety show together.

When Alex Ross Perry set out to make a film about Pavement, he wanted it to be as absurd as some of the ’90s slacker band’s lyrics. For the indie director, known for “Listen Up Philip” and “Her Smell,” that meant pushing the very boundaries of what a film could be.
“Pavements,” premiering on Wednesday in the Horizons section of Venice Film Festival, is a documentary-musical-biopic hybrid that imagines a world where Pavement has achieved Rolling Stones-level success. The film follows the group on its 2022 reunion tour, tracks the progress of Perry’s “Slanted! Enchanted!” musical that also premiered that year, takes the audience inside a pop-up museum dedicated to the band and pitches a tongue-in-cheek biopic starring “Stranger Things” breakout Joe Keery as lead singer Stephen Malkmus and Nat Wolff as guitarist Scott Kannberg, aka Spiral Stairs. Jeremy Allen White says his Bruce Springsteen prep has involved a lot of YouTube rabbit holes — with some advice from the real-life rockstar peppered in.
White will play Springsteen in 20th Century and Disney’s Deliver Me From Nowhere. News of the movie’s production picked up earlier this spring, and the star of The Bear is now deep in preparation for the legendary role.
“I’m really lucky that there’s sort of a team of folks now in place to help young actors portray rock stars,” White told GQ. “I’ve got a really talented group of people helping me train vocally, musically, to get ready for this thing.”
In recent years, Austin Butler portrayed Elvis in Elvis, Rami Malek played Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, Naomi Ackie played Whitney Houston in Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody and Kingsley Ben-Adir played Bob Marley in Bob Marley: One Love.

In one of the best scenes in I’ll Be Right There, a character reveals a family story involving an improbable getaway driver. Taking in this tale is her middle-aged daughter, who knows a thing or two about driving — although her role behind the wheel is more along the lines of schlepping to and fro than making a break for it. These two strong women are played, respectively, by Jeannie Berlin and Edie Falco, actors of ineffable down-to-earth zing. When, later in the movie, the screen fills with a slo-mo shot of them running side by side down a hospital corridor, it feels like a winking, loving gift, one of the giddy dividends from this wry take on family and midlife anxieties.

The festival season is upon us, so Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here with some fresh Oscar predictions before a bevy of these contenders are seen.
Since our last update in July, “A Complete Unknown” has entered the chat. James Mangold‘s Bob Dylan biopic, with Timothee Chalamet playing the icon, filmed in the spring and will open on Christmas (a Clint Eastwood-esque turnaround here). It also stars Elle Fanning as Dylan’s love interest based on Suze Rotolo and Edward Norton as Pete Seeger. The film has already cracked the top 10 in the Best Picture odds, while Chalamet has jumped into fourth place in the Best Actor odds. Could Chalamet become the youngest Best Actor winner ever?

When Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019 in one of the biggest media takeovers of all time, the House of Mouse absorbed its film slate — and promptly had to slog through an endless series of commercial duds.
Movies like “X-Men” spinoffs “Dark Phoenix” and “New Mutants,” Brad Pitt’s astronaut drama “Ad Astra,” buddy comedy “Stuber,” Harrison Ford-led canine adventure “The Call of the Wild” and animated pigeon comedy “Spies in Disguise” were rejected by audiences and sputtered at the box office. Worse, they didn’t exactly instill confidence in the film assets that resulted from the $71.3 billion mega-merger.
“Those Fox titles that were part of the deal but weren’t made by Disney seemed like they were orphaned,” says senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “With any merger, there are going to be growing pains. And this is a slow-moving business.”
So it’s an encouraging development that former...

Musical biopics have picked up in activity as of late. Recently, the Bob Marley movie One Love encapsulated a notable story from the Raggae icon’s life. This year has seen the release of Back to Black, which told the story of Amy Winehouse. And this Christmas will see the premiere of A Complete Unknown, which brings James Mangold back to the music world with Timothée Chalamet occupying the shoes of Bob Dylan. Not to mention, in the future, we’re getting a Bruce Springsteen film with Jeremy Allen White as The Boss, and Sam Mendes is bringing The Beatles’ story to theaters across four feature films.
Deadline is now reporting that a Boy George biopic is now in development over at TriStar. It’s still in the early stages, but the movie is set to be written by scribe J.C. Lee, who co-wrote the film adaptation of his own play Luce.

Both shot their respective movies, “A Complete Unknown” and “Saturday Night,” in March of this year and both films are coming out this year.

Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy’s Star Wars film won’t be connected to the mainline saga, he’s revealed.
Once Shawn Levy is done with the press circuit for Deadpool & Wolverine, he’ll be leaving Marvel to work with Lucasfilm, that other subsidiary of the mighty Disney empire. It’s the world of Star Wars next for Levy, and Lucasfilm will likely be hoping the filmmaker can give the ailing franchise a much-needed shot in the arm as he’s just done for Marvel with Deadpool & Wolverine.
With this in mind, here’s an interesting story that could become more significant further down the road: Levy has begun to chat a little about his Star Wars project, telling the Happy Sad Confused podcast that his film will be standalone.
“There’s only so many times that Star Wars movies can revisit the same section of the timeline,” he said.

James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown stars Timothée Chalamet, and will be arriving on Christmas Day in the US.
When it was revealed last month (alongside a trailer for the upcoming film) that James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown would be arriving in cinemas in 2024, a few eyebrows went up. The project began filming back in March (according to IMDb) and wrapped near the end of June.
Still, Mangold can be a quick worker when it comes to the post-production stage of filmmaking, depending on the film of course. Whilst Le Mans ’66 took a year to make it through the editing room, his other musical biopic – 2005’s Walk The Line – released in cinemas six months after entering the post-production phase and it looks like the filmmaker will be doing the same again here.

James Mangold is no stranger to the musical biopic, having brought Johnny Cash’s story to the big screen with Walk the Line, which got Joaquin Phoenix an Academy Award nomination for that film. Now, Mangold takes on another musical icon with the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown. There has been a more abstract attempt at telling Dylan’s story with Todd Haynes’ 2007 film I’m Not There, which featured an all-star cast and multiple actors playing Bob Dylan in a different phase of his life with a unique interpretation, including Cate Blanchett sporting his iconic look. Searchlight Pictures has dropped the trailer for A Complete Unknown, which stars Timothée Chalamet, Edward Norton, Elle Fanning and Monica Barbaro. The film also co-stars Boyd Holbrook, Dan Fogler, Norbert Leo Butz and Scoot McNairy, with the studio also giving it a December 25th wide release. Given how well Chalamet’s Wonka did...
