If Greg Davies was running TV, new comedy shows would get a two-season order.
The comedian and writer, who fronts fronts the hit series Taskmaster in the UK and writes and stars in sitcom The Cleaner for the BBC, was asked what he would change about the business during a the closing session of the Berlinale Series Market, and responded he would like to see new comedies given more time to hit their stride, adding that all-time classics such as Seinfeld needed multiple seasons to establish themselves.
“I think that people should commission things for at least two seasons,” he said during the panel, which was about the international world of TV comedy.
Davies’ notes were delivered with a characteristic dose of humor, but his point about giving comedy time to grow struck a chord. An industry audience gave his call for double-season orders for comedy a spontaneous round of applause.

The Frasier reboot was years in the making, and now its first season is in the books. While select cast members have returned to the series, not everyone decided to come back. David Hyde Pierce, who played Frasier’s brother, Niles, opted not to reprise his role. Jane Leeves, who took on the role of Daphne Moon, has not appeared either, and John Mahoney, who played Martin Crane, died before the reboot was even a consideration. Kelsey Grammer, the actor behind the iconic role of Dr. Frasier Crane, recently revealed who he’d like to see come back for the reboot. The character wasn’t a huge part of Frasier, but she played a massive role in Cheers, the show that introduced Dr. Crane to the world. Grammer revealed he’d like to see Shelley Long reprise her role as Diane Chambers if Paramount+ greenlights a second season of the Frasier reboot.

Europe has a brand-new media giant.
Vuelta Group, a private-equity fueled company headed by former Canal+ and Goldman Sachs executive Jerome Levy, made a very big launch on the European scene on Thursday, announcing its acquisition of Scandinavian independent film company Scanbox, German distributor/producer SquareOne Entertainment and French international sales company Playtime.
Vuelta (Latin for “to go around”) is planning future acquisitions in France, Italy, Spain and the Benelux region as it looks to build a pan-European television and film studio focusing on the production and distribution of European content across the continent.
The Vuelta launch is a further sign of consolidation in the European indie market, which has already seen several independent producers and distributors subsumed into Pe-backed studios such as Leonine and Mediawan or snatched up by global indie giants like Fremantle and Banijay.
The Veulta setup will see each of its subsidiary companies continue to operate...

If Diego Luna (“Andor”) and/or Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”) are nominated for Best Drama Actor at the Emmys this year, they’ll break a long and disappointing drought in the prestigious and competitive category, with Luna also breaking records for an often-overlooked genre.
It has been 24 years since a Latino actor has been nominated for Best Drama Actor, when Jimmy Smits (who was the first to do it) received his fifth (and final) consecutive nomination for “NYPD Blue” back in 1999. Since then, no other Latino actor has cracked the lofty category. Yes, you read correctly. No. Other. Latino. Actor. Not Wagner Moura for “Narcos.” Not Edward James Olmos for “Battlestar Galactica.” Not even left-field choices like Tyler Posey for “Teen Wolf” or Benjamin Bratt for “The Cleaner.” And no, multiple Emmy nominee Martin Sheen (“The West Wing”) is not included in this list (for argument’s sake...

Succession viewers have joked that a debate stemming from the show’s latest episode is the new version of “the dress”.
HBO’s hit drama is currently airing its fourth and final season, which has already seen plenty of explosive plot moments.
*Succession spoilers below – you have been warned*
After the shocking death of Logan Roy (Brian Cox) in episode three, episode four saw the family dealing with the aftermath and considering what happens to Waystar Royco next.
Only adding to the confusion, Frank (Peter Friedman) produces a document, partially written in pencil and never shown to Logan’s lawyers, suggesting that Kendall (Jeremy Strong) should succeed him.
Kendall’s name has been underlined, but his siblings Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) qucikly point out that the clumsily drawn line could have been Logan crossing it out.

Rachel McAdams has revealed the astonishing slew of hit movies she turned down while on a two-year hiatus in the 2000s.
In 2006, McAdams was being hailed as “the next Julia Roberts” after breaking out in beloved films such as Mean Girls and The Notebook.
However, after refusing to appear nude for a Vanity Fair cover shoot alongside Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley that year, McAdams flew home to Canada.
She “spent her time biking around Toronto, spending time with her family, and recentering,” according to a new interview with Bustle.
According to the magazine, McAdams turned down five major films while “recentering” between 2006 and 2008:The Devil Wears Prada, Casino Royale, Mission: Impossible III, Iron Man, and Get Smart.
“There’s certainly things like ‘I wish I’d done that,’” McAdams said. “[But] I step back and go, ‘That was the right person for that.’”

You might think crime-scene cleaning is very technical,” says Greg Davies. But the comedian best known as the host of Taskmaster and Never Mind the Buzzcocks says he spoke to a real crime-scene cleaner as part of the research for The Cleaner – “and he said the most important tool in his kit was a big bag of towels. He said, ‘You toss a load of those onto the blood and get the worst of it up. It’s just human matter at the end of the day.’”
But while Davies’s quirky sitcom – back for a second season on BBC One – uses the biological residue of violent death to comic effect, The Cleaner’s appeal lies in its poignant exploration of what matters to the humans still occupying the scene. Each episode begins with Davies’ hazmat-suited character – Wicky – arriving at a different location with his bag of towels and bottles...
