Almost all of the Best Actor winners at this century’s 23 Academy Awards ceremonies have ticked at least one of these two boxes: they were over 40 or portraying a real-life fellow. The only exceptions: Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) and Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) who were 36 and 39 respectively when they won for playing fictional characters.
In 2024, Cillian Murphy, 47, won for his portrayal of scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer in the Best Picture champ “Oppenheimer.” He was the sixth Best Actor winner in a decade to prevail for playing a real person after Will Smith (“King Richard”), Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), Gary Oldman (“The Darkest Hour”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Revenant”), and Eddie Redmayne;. The four to win for fictional parts were Brendan Fraser, Anthony Hopkins (“The Father”), Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker), and Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”). Breaking Bad, the critically acclaimed American TV series has left an indelible mark on the world of television. With its gripping storyline, complex characters, and intense action sequences, the show has become a benchmark for excellence in storytelling.
One of the most memorable scenes in the series was the brutal fight that ensued between the characters, Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. Aaron Paul, the actor who played Jesse, revealed that this was the most physically intense scene he had ever shot. Fans of the show unanimously regard this scene as the most intense one, and even the actor agreed.

Fresh from its hugely impressive haul of nine Emmy nominations for hit Apple TV+ show “Slow Horses,” powerhouse producers See-Saw Films has unveiled a slate of new literary options also being developed for TV.
The British/Australian company, which in recent years has demonstrated its ability to amass acclaim, awards and audiences on the big screen and small, has landed the rights to three pieces of IP, including one that has already proved a hit on stage.
Playwright Benedict Lombe’s epic romance “Shifters” — starring “Supacell” lead Tosin Cole and “The Power” actress Heather Ageypong — is currently in the process of transferring to the West End after a sellout run at the Bush Theater (and with Idris Elba recently joining the play’s lineup of producers). But it’s now also being adapted by Lombe for TV with See-Saw, with plans to take the story beyond the stage play and into a returning series.

Helena Bonham Carter had a blast on the Harry Potter set, especially during a memorable scene with Daniel Radcliffe. Despite her veteran status, she was playfully treated like a teen by her younger co-stars. Waving a wand wasn’t as glamorous as it seemed—Carter hit the wand-waving school hard and even picked up a blister from all the practice.

“One Life” is a movie starring Anthony Hopkins and John Flynn. With Helena Bonham Carter, Romola Garai and Lena Olin.
A profoundly emotional true story, “One Life,” is now streaming on Prime Video. The film showcases two towering pillars of excellence: the unparalleled performance of two-time Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins and the hallmark quality of a BBC production, which invariably signifies top-tier craftsmanship.
The narrative of “One Life” inevitably draws comparisons to Steven Spielberg’s iconic “Schindler’s List” (1993). Spielberg’s film told the harrowing tale of a German industrialist who saved hundreds of Jewish children from certain death. Similarly, this film is set in Prague during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, accompanied by evocative piano music reminiscent of John Williams’ unforgettable score.
Does this diminish the film’s impact? While it certainly doesn’t detract from the authenticity of the true story it depicts, it does invite scrutiny regarding its storytelling approach.

Matt Damon and Casey Affleck have both won Oscars for Massachusetts-set movies; Damon for writing “Good Will Hunting” with Casey’s brother Ben, and Casey for acting in the tragic drama “Manchester by the Sea.” Damon and the Afflecks’ latest Boston-set team-up, heist comedy “The Instigators,” is unlikely to win them any additional gold, but it’s a fun ride nevertheless.
Damon — reuniting with his “Bourne Identity” director Doug Liman — stars as Rory, a financially strapped middle-aged man who decides to give heisting a shot. He teams up with Cobby for some scores, and then gets his therapist Donna (Academy Award nominee Hong Chau) involved against her will. How does that make her feel? Not good! The cast also includes heavy hitters like Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, and Rob Gronkowski. This might just be a coincidence, but lately there’s been an influx of films and shows centering around the Holocaust. Be it the Anthony Hopkins starrer One Life (2023) or Peacock’s Harvey Keitel-led drama The Tattooist of Auschwitz (2023), Apple TV’s million-dollar epic Masters of the Air (2023), or Jonathan Glazer’s stunningly impactful The Zone of Interest (2023), there have been a lot of holocaust stories. Now I’m not going to go into whether this is a good or bad thing, but I do believe it’s really hard to top The Zone of Interest, considering the kind of astonishingly original thing the movie managed to pull off when it comes to Holocaust storytelling. That said, Rebecca Snow’s The Boy in the Woods, the most recent Holocaust movie to fall on us, does work. The Usp of it has to be it being a story that is...

“The Fabulous Four,” Bette Midler’s ensemble wedding comedy costarring Susan Sarandon, Megan Mullally and Sheryl Lee Ralph, features more than just four funny acting performances from the powerhouse quartet. The late-in-life bridesmaids have a couple musical surprises up their sleeves, too.
Marilyn (Midler) is getting married and has invited her three lifelong girlfriends to celebrate with her in Key West. Her husband, who she stole from her so-called best friend Lou (Sarandon) back in the day, died only six months before the engagement, but Marilyn is ready for a second wind.
Ralph and Mullally join the wedding party for some silly, sexy antics, too — penis antennae and Kegal balls may be involved.
Musical theater vets Midler and Ralph sing a surprise duet of Jimmy Cliff’s “I Can See Clearly Now.” And Mullally joins Michael Bolton for a cameo to perform “One Life,” written by the Grammy Award winner himself.

Writer-director Cord Jefferson won Best Adapted Screenplay at the 2024 Oscars for turning Percival Everett‘s novel “Erasure” into the critically acclaimed film “American Fiction.” That marked the fourth time in a decade that a film based on a novel won this award. The others: “Women Talking” (Sarah Polley), “Jojo Rabbit” (Taika Waititi), and “Call Me By Your Name” (James Ivory). This is the most common form of adaptation to win. It was an Inside Out specialty weekend, fairly quiet and with a stream of indies films and more wide releases. The schedule is starting to recover from a strike-induced slump that, however, provided oxygen to some indies.
Small films have been competing for screens with majors at arthouses from Alamo Drafthouse to Landmark since theaters reopened post-Covid and the more of them there are, the harder it is. It’s nice to see major back and the broader box office on a solid footing. But it would also be nice to see more indie breakouts like Civil War, Late Night With The Devil, Immaculate, Wicked Little Letters, One Life or Love Lies Bleeding.
“June is crowded” with indies now, says one distributor. And theaters “don’t have space to support indies in a meaningful way.”
Others are heartened by recent wide-release blowouts. “It’s still a tough market. But I...

Actor Nathan Fillion had a brief period where he had trouble finding work before his breakthrough role. Years later, Fillion would reunite with those showrunners again for a special occasion.

But his American Housewife appearance was particularly special because of a couple of reasons. Fillion found himself somewhat reprising his role as Firefly captain Malcolm Reynolds on the show as well. Jerry Seinfeld’s highly touted (and largely panned) feature directorial debut, “Unfrosted,” spent four days leading Netflix’s top 10 movie chart before another Netflix original, “Mother of the Bride” starring Brooke Shields, took the slot before the thematically appropriate weekend holiday.
“Unfrosted” led for just four days, with “Shrek” from 2001 leading midweek before the debut of “Bride.” The Dreamworks animated classic is still in second place, while Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts comedy dropped to fourth.
“Bride” comes from director Mark Waters. Perhaps best known for his “Freaky Friday” remake and the original “Mean Girls,” Waters went on to direct “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “Vampire Academy,” and “Bad Santa 2.” In the new rom-com, Shields is a mom who realizes the father of her future son-in-law broke her heart decades ago.

If you thought season one of Hulu’s limited series Nine Perfect Strangers gave a new definition of locked up, there’s going to be plenty of cabin fever come season 2.
We caught up with the series star and EP Nicole Kidman last night on the red carpet for her AFI Life Achievement Award to ask how the next season is coming along.
“Swiss Alps And Crazy! Hold on tight!” exclaimed Kidman. She was talking about the series’ setting which switches up from the Tranquillum House retreat in the fictional town of Cabrillo, CA to the Swiss Alps. Kidman plays the wellness resort’s founder Masha Dmitrichenko who has it out for her guests by dispensing to them a psychoactive drug, namely Psilocybin. Masha is arrested, cradling her hallucinated late daughter in her arms. However, she appears to have beaten the rap as the Tranquillum House guests covered for her illegal actions during police interviews.

As one of the most legendary video game developers, Hideo Kojima has made a reputation for himself in the industry. From the likes of Metal Gear Solid to Death Stranding, Kojima has a knack for creating amazing stories and engaging gameplay for the player.
Through his nearly four-decade-long career, he’s also had many ideas and projects that have not met the light of day. Remember Silent Hills?
One project that Kojima talked about in the early 2000s was his idea of a “raw game.” The player would be able to play this “raw game” for years if they wanted to. But if they die, the game will end forever.
A very ambitious idea from Hideo Kojima that has not seen the light of day yet. If this project did take off, how would the gaming industry be today?
Hideo Kojima’s Idea for a ‘Raw Game’ No lives. No retries.

Vue International is planning a further shift into non-English language direct distribution following the release of black-and-white Italian comedy drama There’s Still Tomorrow, according to CEO Tim Richards.
”We’re going to start bringing in Polish films, German films, Dutch films and Danish films as well,” said Richards, talking today at The Leisure Property Forum held at the Vue West End in London. ”We know there’s a market here, particularly this year when there are fewer films being released.”

“Kung Fu Panda 4” (Universal) debuted on PVOD to #1 April 9, which it has enjoyed for a week; that will end with “Dune: Part 2” (Warner Bros.), which debuts today after 46 days in release.
Both films still are in the box office Top 10. “Panda” actually rose one position to #4 this weekend, with its 29 percent drop the lowest of any holdover on the list. It still has a shot at a $200 million domestic gross. “Dune 2,” which was #5 this weekend and will get close to $300 million, will likely minimize the impact of parallel home availability given its essential visual presentation.
Based on presales, “Dune 2” is already #6 on iTunes top 10 list (ranked by transactions). Other platforms stick to currently available titles, but it would be surprising if it’s not immediately #1 on both iTunes and Fandango.

This is a stacked weekend for movies that could get awards attention but probably won’t, both in theaters and on digital platforms. First up is a lively ode to one of cinema’s musical masters.
The contender to watch this week: “Ennio”
Giuseppe Tornatore‘s documentary about influential composer Ennio Morricone has been a long time coming, and not only because Morricone’s career dates back to 1946. “Ennio” premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in 2021 and was released in Italy in 2022. But don’t take its delayed domestic debut as a bad omen: The movie is a spellbinding tribute to the two-time Oscar winner, who wrote the scores for “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” “Days of Heaven,” “The Untouchables,” “The Hateful Eight,” and Tornatore’s own “Cinema Paradiso.” The talking heads include Quentin Tarantino, Clint Eastwood, Quincy Jones, and Bruce Springsteen. Following a theatrical run in February,...

This was a dip of just 4.8% on March 2023. While not desirable, this is much less than the dip of 16.4% in February 2024 compared to the same month the year before which was buoyed by crowd-pleasing French titles Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom and Alibi.com 2 that dominated the box office in early 2023. Anthony Hopkins as Nicholas Winton in One Life. Courtesy of Bleecker Street
The moving One Life throws a spotlight on a British man, Nicholas Winton, who has been called the “British Schindler,” saved far more than one life in the early days of WWII. Anthony Hopkins plays the older Nicholas Winton, who in 1938 had organized a kindertransport, an effort to get hundreds of children, mostly Jewish, out of Prague ahead of the Nazis, but whose heroic efforts were not widely known or recognized until 1988, when he appeared on a popular British TV talk show.
The children and their families had fled to Prague after Hitler seized the Sudetenland, a German-speaking area in the north of the then Czechoslovakia, in 1938, the beginning of Hitler’s plan for conquest. In the infamous appeasement of Hitler, European countries, including Britain, had agreed to Hitler’s demands and ceded the Sudetenland to Germany, with a false promise of peace.

New in theaters is “One Life” starring legendary actor Anthony Hopkins as real-life British humanitarian Sir Nicholas Winton. Just three years ago he led French playwright Florian Zeller‘s feature directorial debut “The Father.” It not only managed to win him a second Oscar for Best Actor following “The Silence of the Lambs” back in 1991, but it also made headlines. One reason was how it was unconventionally the final award presented during the telecast that year because the sentimental favorite, Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), was widely expected to win posthumously. Hopkins pulled off a huge upset, though, and he wasn’t even there to accept it. How did that win happen? Here are five reasons.

For a second consecutive weekend, Kung Fu Panda 4 held onto the number one spot of the box-office weekend, albeit by only $0.9 million.
In its second weekend of release, Kung Fu Panda 4 brought in $30.0 million to stay on top of the top ten. This gives the Universal Pictures product an overall total of $107.7 million. Meanwhile, still relegated to the second spot of the top ten, Dune: Part Two finished just behind that with $29.1 million over the weekend for Warner Brothers. This brings the film’s three-week tally to $205.3 million. Debuting in third place with $7.5 million was the family film Arthur the King starring Mark Wahlberg. The offering from Lionsgate Films took the place of another Lionsgate film as Imaginary was pushed down to fourth where it added $5.6 million, raising its two-week total to $19.1 million. Also falling a spot was Angel Studios’ Cabrini which landed in fifth place this weekend...

Indies in moderate-wide release claimed the nos. 6, 8 and 9 spots at the domestic box office led by Love Lies Bleeding. Kristin Steward toplines the Berlin-premiering film by Rose Glass that expanded nationwide, grossing $2.5 million for the weekend on 1,362 screens (up from five theaters opening week). The steamy crime thriller from A24 also stars Katy O’Brian with an ensemble featuring Ed Harris, Anna Baryshnikov Dave Franco and Jenna Malone. It’s 88% Certified Fresh with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes (92% critics score).

“Kung Fu Panda 4” (Universal) and “Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.) came in a close #1-#2 this weekend, with the DreamWorks Animation title edging out Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi adaptation by just under $1 million ($30 million to $29.1 million). The two films, in their second and third weekends respectively, are positioned to exceed their most optimistic pre-release projections.
Going against last year’s trend of disappointing franchise results, the two sequels made up about two thirds of the weekend’s $90 million total. With little help from other new releases, this fell just short of last year’s $92 million. It reduced the year’s deficit to nine percent.
“Dune” joined WB’s “Wonka” as the second film to pass the domestic $200 million total since last July. By next weekend, it will surpass that film’s $218 million gross.
How high could it go? Pre-release, the most optimistic hopes were perhaps $250 million — $150 million more than the first “Dune,...

March has been going along well, but only one new wide release made much of a mark this weekend as “Kung Fu Panda 4” and “Dune: Part Two” continued to reign over all, including an actual “king.” Read on for the weekend box office report.
After scoring one of the second-best openings of 2024, the animated “Kung Fu Panda 4” held onto first place for a second weekend in a row, winning Friday with $8.8 million and then repeating with an estimated $30 million for the weekend, down 48% from its opening weekend. It has grossed $107.7 million in its first 10 days in North America. It added another $39.6 million in 56 international territories for a global weekend of $69.6 million and a global total of $176.5 million.
Denis Villeneuve‘s sci-fi epic “Dune: Part Two” crossed the $200 million mark domestically in its third weekend, making it the first movie to cross that milestone since “Wonka.” This weekend, it added another $29.1 million,...

Sunday Am Update: The whole marketplace is coming in lighter than expected at $89M, which is -3% off from the same frame a year ago when Shazam Fury of the Gods did $30M. That’s exactly what the second weekend is for Kung Fu Panda 4 which is a great hold at -48%, rising to $107.7M stateside running total. Legendary/Warner Bros’ Dune Part Two isn’t far behind with $29.1M, -37%, for a running total of $205.3M. The domestic endgame on the sequel is expected to be around $275M.
Despite excellent holds by the big guns, it’s unfortunately, the middle of the box office dropped out — and that’s where the marketplace is still weak, post pandemic and post strikes. Lionsgate’s Mark Wahlberg dog adventure racing movie, Arthur the King, came in below in its projects at $7.5M. The movie was forecasted to do $8M-$10M. Important...

The early weekend box office numbers are in, and it looks like Dune: Part Two wasn’t quite able to take the number one spot from Kung Fu Panda 4 after all. It was very close, with the animated sequel grossing $30 million to Dune’s $29.1 million. It’s so close that I’m not quite willing to admit my prediction that Dune 2 would top Panda was wrong, as Denis Villeneuve’s sequel has been overperforming at Sunday matinees the last few weeks. That said, even if it doesn’t top Panda, it still had a great weekend, with it only dropping a modest 37% in its third week. It also passed the double-century mark, with its final gross at $205 million. Will it cross $300 million? It’s possible, although it will face heavy competition over the next two weeks with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and Godzilla x Kong.

Universal/DreamWorks’ “Kung Fu Panda 4” and Warner Bros./Legendary’s “Dune: Part Two” are going unchallenged by several new wide releases this weekend, with “Kung Fu Panda 4” getting the narrow edge for No. 1 with $30 million in its second weekend in theaters.
With just a 48% drop from its $57.9 million opening weekend, “Kung Fu Panda 4” now has a two-weekend total of $107 million domestic and is well on pace to blow past the $186 million domestic run of fellow animated franchise feature “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” a year ago. Globally, “Kung Fu Panda 4” has a total of $176.5 million and will be released next weekend in China, where the film has enjoyed success in the past but where Hollywood now has little sway over audiences since the pandemic.
“Dune: Part Two” could still take the No. 1 spot from “Kung Fu Panda 4” with an estimated $29.1 million in its third weekend,...
