Venice Film Festival competition title “Harvest,” directed by Athina Rachel Tsangari, is one of three films at the festival to be represented for sales by the Match Factory as well as being produced or co-produced by the company.
The other two are “Edge of Night,” the debut feature by German-Turkish director Türker Süer, screening in Horizons Extra, and “Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass,” an animated film by the Quay Brothers, playing in Venice Days.
Tsangari, the director of “Attenberg” (winner of Venice’s best actress award in 2010) and “Chevalier” (2015), returns to Venice competition with “Harvest.” Over seven hallucinatory days, a village with no name, in an undefined time and place, disappears.
In Tsangari’s tragicomic take on a Western, townsman-turned-farmer Walter Thirsk and befuddled lord of the manor Charles Kent are childhood friends about to face an invasion from the outside world: the trauma of modernity.

Director and showrunner Mike Flanagan has always been a "listener" when understanding the human condition.
While his genre of choice has been horror, and primarily psychological horror at that, he has made a career out of listening to what people have to say about religion, guilt, insanity, and death.
He is as much a spiritual guru as a movie director.
Even from his early works, like Absentia and Oculus, one could see Flanagan as a visionary and an interactive designer, determined to deliver the audience an experience they crafted, a game, a nightmare they could vicariously live through archetypical characters.
He became even more crowd-pleaser with his first two ghostly mini-series, The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor.
These epic haunted tales blurred the lines between guilt and fear.
While Midnight Mass was Flanagan's most profound and brilliant work to date (deserving of an article all...

Before "Star Wars," there was "Thx 1138." A strange, dystopic science fiction movie packed with big ideas up to its eyeballs, "Thx 1138" is now mostly known as the feature directorial debut of one George Walton Lucas Jr. (though it also came back in conversation when the best episode of "Andor" paid homage to it). The future Lucasfilm founder originally created this story of repressed emotions and stymied sexuality as a student film, but by the time it was reimagined as a feature, it had gained backing from Warner Bros.
Lucas' American Zoetrope co-founder Francis Ford Coppola also had faith in the movie, and served as one of its producers. "Thx 1138" starred Robert Duvall, then already known for his work on stage and television, not to mention in films like "To Kill A Mockingbird," "M*A*S*H," and "True Grit." Future "Halloween" actor Donald Pleasence co-starred, along with a then-unknown actress named Maggie McOmie.

Alexander Skarsgård has signed on to co-star alongside Harry Melling (The Pale Blue Eye) in Pillion, a new feature from Poor Things producers Element Pictures being pitched as a “fun and filthy romance with heart.”
Harry Lighton, who directed the BAFTA-nominated short Wren Boys, will direct Pillion from his own script, which is inspired by Adam Mars-Jones’ 2019 novel Box Hill. Cornerstone is handling worldwide sales on the films and will pitch the project to buyers at the Cannes film market next week.
Melling plays Colin, a weedy wallflower who is letting life pass him by until he meets Ray (Skarsgård), an impossibly handsome leader of a motorbike club, who him on as his submissive. Ray uproots Colin from his dreary suburban life and introduces him to a community of kinky, queer bikers, but as Colin dives deeper into Ray’s world, he begins to question whether the life of a 24/7 submissive is really for him.

20th Century and Disney has landed Deliver Me From Nowhere, the Bruce Springsteen project that has Jeremy Allen White in talks to star as the Boss.
Scott Cooper, who treaded into music territory with his debut Crazy Heart, will write and direct the feature that will be based on the 2023 book Deliver Me from Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska by Warren Zanes.
The Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein (The Maze Runner trilogy) and Eric Robinson are producing along with Cooper and Zanes. Scott Stuber is also producing, marking the first project for the former Netflix film head since he left the streamer in March.
The project does have the involvement of Springsteen and of his manager Jon Landau, giving it something essential: access to the music.

Searchlight Pictures releases director Ned Benson’s movie in select theaters April 5 before it begins streaming via Hulu on April 12. Justin H. Min and Austin Crute also star in the film that premieres at this year’s South by Southwest Festival.
The Greatest Hits follows Harriet (Boynton), who realizes that her favorite songs can literally transport her through time to revisit cherished memories with former boyfriend Max (Corenswet). In the meantime, she begins exploring feelings for a new potential love interest (Min) while grappling with whether she should alter the past.
“If something happened to you, and I could stop it, but it would mean we would never meet, would you want me to?” Boynton asks a confused Corenswet in the trailer.

The Dark Knight trilogy left an indelible mark on the superhero genre, raising audiences’ expectations for comic book movies. With the success of the first movie, the second installment introduced Tom Hardy’s Bane who forced Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne to resume his role as Batman. Though the former’s character often garnered comparison with the late Heath Ledger’s Joker, he faced yet another challenge.

'Historical horror' is not a term that's been especially popularized, but it's most effective when describing the delicious combination of historical events and fictional horror. This subgenre has been quietly enjoying a great run during the last decade or so: not only have there been several movies that brilliantly mix detail-heavy period settings with creepy goings-on but there have been a number of TV shows delving into historical horror with much success, such as Showtime's "Penny Dreadful."
Latest on the scene is AMC's "The Terror," a series that so far has been able to vary its period setting, themes, and even tone thanks to being anthologized season to season. After the first season, which was based on author Dan Simmons' novel "The Terror" (hence the series' name), the second season went on to tell an original tale set in and around the Japanese internment camps in America during WWII.

Christian Bale is thought by many to have become an “actor’s actor.” He is fully committed to his characters, often staying in character during shooting, and he is not afraid to lose or gain weight in order to make a character more believable, as was the case with his Oscar-nominated role as former U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney in “Vice.”
Good reviews are something that Bale has gotten used to during his three-decade film career, beginning with his starring role in Steven Spielberg‘s “Empire of the Sun” when he was only 13 years old. In that time, Bale has been nominated for three Oscars (winning one for “The Fighter” with bids for “American Hustle” and “The Big Short”), three Golden Globes and five Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations of which he won two (for “The Fighter” and “American Hustle”). Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper is working on a biopic of the Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen. More details here.
Another day, and another biopic is reportedly in the works in La La Land. World of Reel reports that Scott Cooper, director of The Pale Blue Eyes, Crazy Heart and Out Of The Furnace, has signed on to make a film about Bruce Springsteen.
Springsteen is consulting with Cooper on the film, which will portray Springsteen’s recording of his 1982 album, Nebraska. It was the source of one of Springsteen’s biggest hits, Born In The USA.
No one has been cast in the film yet, and it’ll be interesting to see who takes on the role of the Boss. Music biopics tend to do pretty well both at the box office and in industry circles. Portraying Freddy Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody brought Rami Malek an Oscar and Taron Edgerton...

Earlier this week, a new listing indicated that director Maggie Gyllenhaal was gearing up to begin production on a Bride of Frankenstein feature tentatively titled The Bride. The currently untitled Frankenstein lore movie, now confirmed under Warner Bros., is not only now official, per Deadline, but Annette Bening has joined the cast.
Bening adds to a cast that includes star Jessie Buckley, Penelope Cruz as the Bride, Christian Bale as Frankenstein, Peter Sarsgaard as a detective.
In the untitled Bride of Frankenstein film, “A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police and a wild and radical social movement.”
This confirms a period-set feature that will center around Frankenstein’s quest for love.

While Guillermo del Toro is hard at work on his new Frankenstein adaptation, director Maggie Gyllenhaal appears to be gearing up to begin production on The Bride, a Bride of Frankenstein update, according to the Production List.
The listing confirms previous reports that The Bride will star Penelope Cruz as the Bride, Christian Bale as Frankenstein, and Peter Sarsgaard as a detective.
It doesn’t include plot details, however, beyond “a horror thriller, about the Bride of Frankenstein.” So, it remains unclear whether The Bride will be a more faithful period horror remake or a give a contemporary spin on the classic horror movie.
In the original 1935 film from director James Whale, “After recovering from injuries sustained in the mob attack upon himself and his creation, Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive) falls under the control of his former mentor, Dr. Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger), who insists the now-chastened doctor resume his experiments in creating new life.

Harper Lee's "To Kill A Mockingbird" is about as quintessentially American as a classic book can get. The 1960 novel, which is still commonly read in schools today, follows young Alabaman girl Scout Finch as she endures the trials and tribulations of her pre-teen years -- and witnesses the grim realities of the Jim Crow-era South. Some aspects of "To Kill A Mockingbird" haven't aged perfectly, but the book remains beloved for good reason. It's funny, sharp, and emotional, full of wisdom and harsh truth, and builds a world that's vividly alive.
That world made the leap from the page to the big screen in 1962, when director Robert Mulligan and playwright Horton Foote adapted "To Kill A Mockingbird" as a film. The movie version is indelible in its own right. It's anchored by a precise performance from Gregory Peck, who plays compassionate defense attorney Atticus Finch. In the 60 years since...

The past 24 hours have been awash in headlines about Netflix’s What We Watched report: an information dump that many analysts considered the most transparent accounting of user data that the streamer has ever released.
The report tracked user engagement using an “hours watched” metric – meaning how many hours a piece of content was viewed, as opposed to how many individual users watched it. The report is heavy with TV series because, as the company noted, the amount of hours in a TV program are much greater than that of a standalone feature. But some movies clawed to the top of the ranking, which helps indicate how films travel on the platform.
Here are the top ten films – eight of which Netflix developed or financed — that appear in the report, which tracked hours watched from January to June of 2023:

Russell’s 2013 Best Picture-nominated crime comedy American Hustle, Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale are in talks to reteam on Best of Enemies, a new film based on the book Best of Enemies: The Last Great Spy Story of the Cold War by Eric Dezenhall and Gus Russo.

Christian Bale worked with Alien director Ridley Scott on Exodus: Gods and Kings, which was an adaptation of the famous biblical story. But Bale thought Scott might have been freaked out by his star’s appearance for their feature.

Bale felt he might have made a bad impression after being cast in Scott’s biblical epic Exodus. The actor has been known to change his physique for his films. So physically, Bale didn’t think he had the look Scott wanted for his Moses. Bale put on a significant amount of weight to play his lead role in American Hustle.
Meanwhile, Moses was supposed to carry a much more slight physique. It didn’t help that Bale’s performance was going to follow Charlton Heston’s take on Moses in The Ten Commandments.

While Renfield brought Universal Classic Monster Dracula into the present earlier this year, Netflix reportedly aims to tackle a Bride of Frankenstein remake, The Bride, with Maggie Gyllenhaal as director.
As first reported by World of Reel, the news comes from Production Weekly, which cites Penelope Cruz as the Bride, Christian Bale as Frankenstein, and Peter Sarsgaard among the cast.
Meanwhile, the Monster (Boris Karloff) remains on the run from those who wish to destroy him without understanding that his intentions are generally good despite his lack of socialization and self-control.”

Gillian Anderson has been cast in Netflix’s Western drama series “The Abandons” from creator Kurt Sutter.
Anderson will play Constance, the matriarch of the wealthy Van Ness family who doubled the mining fortune she inherited from her husband. Her wealth, charm and power allowed her to forge relationships with political allies despite their town’s patriarchal bias.
The official Netflix logline for the show reads, “As a group of diverse, outlier families pursue their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back. In this bloody process, ‘justice’ is stretched beyond the boundaries of the law. ‘The Abandons’ will explore that fine line between survival and law, the consequences of violence, and the corrosive power of secrets,...

This story about director the visual effects design of “Andor” first ran in the Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
For Disney+’s “Andor,” an erudite elucidation of the prequel universe first seen in the film “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” visual effects supervisor Scott Pritchard took things back to basics in real locations, despite having technology that in 1977 might have made George Lucas Vader-breathe with envy.
“I’m very much of the opinion that first and foremost, we’re storytellers,” Pritchard, who first joined Ilm with 2015’s “The Force Awakens,” said. “We’ve got to drive the story forward. ‘Andor’ is the perfect show to exercise that kind of philosophy. It’s more about background and texture and setting and place and giving you something for the characters [to play off], because most of our work was environment.”

Few literary figures have achieved the same kind of pop culture afterlife as Edgar Allan Poe. Much like Franz Kafka, the idea of Poe has become conflated with the writer's most famous works: The tragic, haunted figure, scribbling away feverishly by candlelight, only pausing occasionally to fling open the shutters of his window and gaze out into the night beyond with fear and trepidation.
This romantic notion makes Poe an intriguing character who has carried well into other mediums. There are hundreds of comics based on the author and/or his works (even teaming up with the Dark Knight in "Batman: Nevermore"), as well as stage plays, radio shows, books, and, of course, movies. The controversial master of silent cinema, D.W. Griffith, directed the first film based on the author, "Edgar Allan Poe," back in 1909, and actors including Joseph Cotton, Klaus Kinski, and Ben Chaplin have all played the gloomy author on screen.
