Tony Lo Bianco, the Brooklyn actor who oozed criminal charm in the gritty 1970s New York City dramas The French Connection and The Seven-Ups, has died. He was 87.
Lo Bianco died Tuesday night of prostate cancer at his horse farm in Poolesville, Maryland, his wife, Alyse, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Lo Bianco was also memorable as a smooth-talking con man with a lonely nurse (Shirley Stoler) for a girlfriend/accomplice in Leonard Kastle’s documentary-style The Honeymoon Killers (1970), which Francois Truffaut once said was his favorite American film.
In another cult classic, the horror thriller God Told Me To (1976), directed by Larry Cohen, Lo Bianco starred as a New York cop who investigates a series of bizarre murders orchestrated by the leader of a religious group (Richard Lynch).
He received a best actor Tony nomination in 1983 for playing Eddie Carbone in a revival of Arthur Miller’s A View From the Bridge,...

John Boyega wants to discuss the good book with you. Which book am I talking about? The Book of Eli, of course! Whispers around the watercooler imply that Boyega is prepping a prequel series based on 2010’s The Book of Eli. According to Deadline, Boyega will play a younger version of Eli, the character played by Denzel Washington in the Albert Hughes and Allen Hughes-directed film. Adding authenticity to the project is The Book of Eli writer Gary Whitta, who will create/write/executive produce the upcoming prequel series. The Book of Eli prequel series comes from Alcon Entertainment. They’ll bring the show to market to land a premium streaming venue.
In The Book of Eli, a drifter fights across a ravaged, post-apocalyptic America while protecting a sacred book that holds the secrets to humanity’s salvation. The story takes place 30 years after a nuclear catastrophe resulting in an ecocide.

In the 15 years since Ahsoka Tano was first introduced in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, she has appeared in many other shows like Star Wars: Rebels, The Mandalorian, and most recently The Book of Boba Fett. Her wit, Force-wielding skills, and her desire to do good for the Galaxy even after leaving the Jedi Order have made her a fan-favorite character with fans eager to see her in a solo series.
Because Ahsoka has been involved in so many eras throughout Star Wars history from The Clone Wars to the New Republic, there are plenty of characters, both familiar and otherwise, that we can expect to see throughout the series. Ahsoka will feature the return of several Rebels and Clone Wars characters, as well as the introduction of new characters we haven’t yet seen in canon before.

Ray Stevenson died on location in Italy this week while working on the film Cassino in Ischi. In it, he plays Nic Cassino, who appears to be the title character. But throughout his career the actor was renowned for strong supporting roles. Stevenson exemplified this “one for all” spirit as Porthos in The Three Musketeers (2011) and honed it through The Book of Eli (2010), King Arthur (2004), the Thor movies, and the upcoming Star Wars Disney+ series, Ashoka. He was at his most supportive, even as a lead character, when he played legionnaire Titus Pullo in HBO’s Rome. Pullo was a warrior with a heart of gold, but at one point he could also be the second-hand-man to an early version of a mob kingpin.
But Stevenson was second to no one in the role of Danny Greene, the titular character of writer-director Jonathan Hensleigh’s 2011 gangster-genre love letter, Kill the Irishman.

Ray Stevenson has been cast in the upcoming Disney Plus “Star Wars” series “Ahsoka,” Variety has confirmed with sources.
He joins previously announced series lead Rosario Dawson, who will star as Ahsoka Tano, as well as cast members Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Natasha Liu Bordizz, and Ivanna Sakhno.
Details on who Stevenson will be playing in the series are being kept under wraps, but it is believed that he will be playing a villain in the series, thought not the main villain, Grand Admiral Thrawn.
Reps for Lucasfilm did not immediately respond to Variety’s request for comment.
This is not the first time Stevenson has been a part of the “Star Wars” universe. He previously lent his voice to the two animated series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels” as the character Gar Saxon, a Mandalorian commando. Liam Neeson’s unexpected yet remarkably durable second act as a grizzled action star isn’t showing any signs of slowing down, and each one of his modest hits makes it that much easier to imagine the 69-year-old actor will be able to keep this up for many years to come. His secret? Efficiency. If Neeson broke into the world of mid-budget, low-rent beat-em-ups as a gangly brawler who was ready to go anywhere and fight anyone in order to rescue his daughter, his subsequent contributions to the genre were a lot more sedentary.
Movies like “Non-Stop” and “Run All Night” tried to hide that fact behind their titles — even “The Commuter” promised a greater degree of movement than it ultimately delivered — but Neeson’s more recent efforts have stopped trying to disguise that skewed ratio between intensity and exertion. In “Cold Pursuit,” he sparked a war that allowed him...

The idea of marrying the reality-tv staple “Ice Road Truckers” with the suspense classic “The Wages of Fear” — about long-haul drivers trying to get through treacherous mountain roads with a payload of nitroglycerin — isn’t a bad one in theory. In practice, however, “The Ice Road” is so often inept and heavy-handed that not even the reliable presence of Liam Neeson can rescue it.
Neeson has become a genre unto himself in recent years, starring in one movie after another about a regular guy (with a special set of skills) who finds himself in extraordinary circumstances. (This latest is his second in 2021 alone.) But while the Irish actor reliably hits both his marks and the bad guys, he’s doing so in a film that’s leadenly predictable when it’s not unintentionally laugh-out-loud funny.
Some of those laughs come from the screenplay by director Jonathan Hensleigh (“Kill the Irishman”), which trots out chestnuts like,...

As if the Frozen North hadn’t already given him enough grief in “The Grey” and “Cold Pursuit,” Liam Neeson is back for more chilly punishment with “The Ice Road.” Jonathan Hensleigh’s first feature as writer-director since “Kill the Irishman” a decade ago has the star as one of three drivers making a dangerous journey to deliver equipment needed to rescue trapped miners in Northern Manitoba.
Just about every possible peril turns up to thwart their mission en route, making for an increasingly implausible action movie that will entertain most viewers, but also perhaps make them feel a bit played for fools. In the U.S., it’s going straight to Netflix on June 25, while other distributors are handling theatrical and/or online release in numerous other territories over the coming weeks.

Netflix has everyone’s Fourth of July entertainment covered.
Hitting the streaming platform on July 4 is “Stranger Things” season three, which is finally returning two years after its predecessor. Martin Scorsese fans are also sure to be excited once they see four of the director’s films (“Taxi Driver” “Mean Streets” “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” and “Who’s That Knocking at My Door?”) ready to stream on the first day of the month.
Additionally, Fourth of July celebrants can look back on history with Netflix’s own revisionist features such as “Inglourious Basterds” before enjoying some family fun with more kid friendly options like “Megamind” and “Princess and the Frog.”

Our perception of the Forest City having only seen it on screen.
All this week, Cleveland, Ohio, is being overrun with politicians, their supporters, and protestors of their platforms as the Republican National Convention is being held at the Quicken Loans Arena through Thursday. To help get a better sense of this “Cleve-Land,” as Howard the Duck calls it, we’re looking to entertainment, specifically movies and television, for what it can tell us about this city. If there’s anything we miss or misunderstand, blame Hollywood.
Cleveland Rocks
It’s the Rock and Roll Capital of the World, home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, so it’s not surprising that, to an outsider, Cleveland primarily looks like a city where music reigns. You could make a nice concert with all the fictional bands based there, including Cherry Bomb from Howard the Duck, The Barbusters from Light of Day, the...

It’s difficult to be scared of what you don’t believe in. Michael King, a documentary filmmaker whose wife has just died, has no belief in an afterlife and thus feels no fear when it comes to exploring the supernatural. He’s all too willing to tempt dark paranormal forces during the making of his latest film, and he’ll learn the hard way that supernatural forces not only exist, but are capable of great evil.
Anchor Bay Films’ upcoming horror movie The Possession of Michael King will be adding some paranormal scares to the summer.

If you’ve been watching USA’s Political Animals then you might see why the folks over at HBO’s Game of Thrones thought Ciarán Hinds would nicely as Mance Rayder, the “King Beyond the Wall” who presides over the Free Folk north of the Wall. In Animals, Hinds plays a Bill Clinton-George Bush hybrid womanizer who miraculously spent two terms as president despite his hard-living lifestyle and lack of common sense. But Hinds is not a stranger to leadership roles nor HBO. Fans of Rome may remember him as Gaius Julius Caesar and he’s shown up recently in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, John Carter, and The Debt. Ufc legend Randy Couture and actor Dominic Purcell star in this latest straight-to-home video airplane actioner Hijacked, directed by Brandon Nutt. The film comes to Blu-Ray and DVD on July 31st, 2012.
We previously posted a trailer and a clip from the film and now we have two more clips featuring our action stars flexing their acting chops, while taking out a few baddies in the process.
I’m not usually one for this grade of film, but occasionally something like Hijacked can provide you with 2 hours of mindless entertainment and nonstop laughter. The acting looks cheesy and over-the-top, while the violence looks painfully rendered in CGI and not all that creative. I’m willing to give this one a shot, but only because Hijacked could become something of an underground classic.
Clip one is titled Cargo Hold and it briefly shows Couture and Purcell as they tussle with a possible rogue agent.

I had the occasion to have lunch with film industry veteran Jonathan Dana at Cannes and he shared some war stories of what it means to be a "producer" in this day and age.
Zc: So Jonathan, what is it that you do?
Jd: Over my 41 years in the business I have done just about everything except own a theater, including being a partner in two of the prominent indie companies of the 80's and 90's (Atlantic Releasing and Triton Pictures), before going back on my own in 1995 as a producer and producer's rep. I was also an initial investor in and, with the founders, supervised the launch of indie film community Withoutabox.com, now an operating division of IMDb.
I do both docs and fiction films and enjoy each. Two of my recent docs as a rep have been 2012 Spirit Award nominee "We Were Here" which has its televison premiere on Independent Lens this week, and "The Invisible War" which won the American Doc Audience Award at this year's Sundance and opens theatrically imminently.
As a producer does that mean you came to Cannes to sell something?
We're always selling something, no?
Did you have specific goals in mind for Cannes? Did you achieve those goals?
Yes, I always have a specific mission in Cannes, whatever it might be in any particular year. One of the art forms, and survival skills, is being able to define your goals in your own mind ahead of time so you can constantly keep steering back to the mission amidst the apparent chaos of the fest and market. And yes, the fest was a success for me, despite its rather unusual wet weather.
This year my mission was to move forward a slate of films I am executive producing with Code Entertainment, the excellent production/finance company run by Al Corley and Bart Rosenblatt with whom I have worked for many years ("You Kill Me", "Kill the Irishman", "Drowning Mona", "Sad Jack", upcoming.)
I also had the pleasure of representing the interests of screenwriter Jose Rivera, Rick Berg's client at Code's management division, who was unable to attend the premiere of his "On the Road". I loved the film, and it was a great 'red carpet' evening, with fine weather to boot!
How important is networking to what a producer does?
It's obviously a big part of the job, especially at a Cannes like this one where so many new sales and financing companies were announced. It is important to stay current, even though it often makes your head hurt. I was proud of myself this year, going totally electronic with my iPhone, both for scheduling and for keeping meeting notes, making the usually horrific task of post-Cannes debriefing entirely tolerable.
Do you have any advice for producers and filmmakers who feel that it's just too expensive to justify the cost of going to Cannes or another major festival?
There are many ways to skin a cat. No one event is irreplaceable. Just keep moving forward with the resources at hand. No one ever failed at the movie business just because they did not go to any particular festival.
Do you have any anecdotes or a particular "Cannes moment" of note?
Having been to Cannes 30 times, I am fortunate to have had numerous Cannes moments, including huge triumphs and failures, as well as the tiny moments that are at least equally memorable, so it is hard to pick one. I do remember standing at the top of the red carpet with Patty Hearst, a lovely woman, after the premiere of her biopic that we made with Paul Schrader, staring out at the crowd, thinking "Wow, there's all kinda ways to get to the top of these stairs."

With Mad Men about to close its outstanding fifth season (or, you could say, fifth outstanding) season, Matthew Weiner is using that show’s too-long hiatus to make a film. With You Are Here, he’s corralled Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis, Amy Poehler, and Laura Ramsey (Kill The Irishman) to tell the story of a weatherman (Wilson) and his best friend (Galifianakis), both of whom seek enlightenment in their lives following the death of a father. (Some reports say it’s the weatherman, others say it’s the friend. We’ll know sooner or later.)
Adding herself to this lineup is Melissa Rauch (the deplorable Big Bang Theory); she’s said to be playing a call girl with more style than her occupation requires. How this plays a crucial part in the story? I can’t say I know. Funny, though, that someone who acts one of TV’s worst...
