Sunday Am: In an upset nobody saw coming, the third weekend of Warner Bros’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice stole No. 1 away from Paramount and Hasbro Entertainment’s Transformers One, $26M to $25M.
On Friday and into Saturday Am, some saw a tight race between the Tim Burton-directed movie and the Josh Cooley-helmed animated pic, however, the notion was that matinees would work greatly in favor of the newer tentpole. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice had a great $11.8M Saturday to Transformers One‘s $9.1M.
At the end of the day, to see one franchise triumph over the other by a margin, well, that’s a rich man’s problem, err a major studio’s problem, though bountiful for exhibition. Threepeats are a great streak for any major studio to cherish at the B.O. Note, this is no doubt frustrating for Paramount Animation, which had a lot of faith in Transformers One as...

Life peaked in high school for Mike McKenna (Mark Wahlberg), whereas then-sweetheart Roxanne Hall (Halle Berry) managed to escape dead-end New Jersey and travel the world. While he joined the local construction workers union, she joined the Union, a clandestine spy group about whom Roxanne blandly claims, “Half the intelligence community don’t know we exist, and the other half regret finding out.”
A lazy wish-fulfillment fantasy from Netflix’s star-service department, “The Union” is actually the story of a reunion — Mike and Roxanne’s — set against the backdrop of a crisis we’ve seen one too many times in recent spy movies. For Wahlberg, the wish in question is wanting to be James Bond, which will never happen for the Dorchester-born American. And the fantasy is getting to play the next best thing, recruited by former Bond girl Halle Berry.

The 21st century is when everything changes.
British science fiction has been a lot of things. It was both cheesier and campier than its American counterpart, and yet also darker, grittier, and less afraid to tackle grown-up themes and bleaker outcomes. It had been a joke, and critically acclaimed, and it had all but died off except for some under-the-radar contenders.
And then something major happened: Doctor Who came back. It was always going to happen eventually – just look how many times The Tomorrow People has been remade. But Doctor Who didn’t just come back, it came back and became the biggest show in the country, on purpose.
Suddenly, the people in charge thought that maybe TV shows about ideas, and technology, and realities ahead of and besides our own could draw an audience, only this time they were taking it seriously and spending actual money on it. And...

Exclusive: It’s just another day in Manila’s Riverbanks Center studios and a stand-in actor is beating off a group of gangsters with an outsized prosthetic penis – thankfully one that is wrapped in a tasteful chiffon scarf.
The actor he’s standing in for, Enrique Gil, is one of the biggest heartthrobs in the Philippines’ film and TV industries and it’s safe to say he’s taking a slight departure with his most recent project, I Am Not Big Bird, which was mostly filmed in Thailand with some interiors in Manila.
Produced by Anima Studios and Abs-cbn’s Black Sheep, the film is about a 30-something virgin (Gil) who, dejected after his girlfriend turns down his marriage proposal, heads off on holiday to Thailand with a bunch of friends. Once there, a peculiar chain of events ensues when Gil’s character is mistaken for a famous Thai porn star,...

Hot off “Dicks: The Musical’s” premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, A24 has released the song “All Love is Love” from the film.
Performed by Aaron Jackson, Josh Sharp, Bowen Yang, Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally and featuring vocalist Lauren Evans, “All Love Is Love” is one of the musical’s many songs that could be submitted for original song consideration at the Oscars.
The song was composed by “Moulin Rouge’s” Marius de Vries and Karl Saint Lucy, and co-written with the film’s writers and stars Jackson and Sharp.
“Dicks: the Musical” is a wild and raunchy comedy starring Jackson and Sharp as antagonistic businessmen and long-lost twins with a plan to trick their separated parents. Lane and Mullally play the separated parents who the twins try to trick into getting back together. Yang features as none other than God himself, while rapper Megan Thee Stallion stars as the twins’ suited-up boss,...

Marco Bellocchio excels at grand gestures. The Italian title of the filmmaker’s latest, Kidnapped, appears on screen in large, blood-red letters, like the screaming headline of a tabloid news article. Yet it’s placed over a deceptively serene scene, circa the late-1850s, of servant woman Anna Morisi (Aurora Camatti) strolling into a store across the street from her Bologna-residing employers, the Jewish Mortara family. The clashing juxtaposition of words and images is apt, for none of the characters suspects that history is about to be made.
The Mortara case is one of the most egregious stains on the legacy of the Catholic Church. It captured the world’s attention at a particularly fraught moment, right as the Papal States (occupied Italian territories that had for centuries been under the direct rule of successive popes) were close to permanent dissolution, and global antisemitism was on a genocidal rise.

No wonder the writers are on strike.
Being forced to try to bring freshness to the same tired ideas over and over to get some studio work must be frustrating. I would be picketing Lionsgate (which is behind this movie) just because it’s really not easy making this kind of thing original. The latest ripoff — and it literally is because it comes from the 2015 Spanish film El Desconocido, which itself has been remade more than once in the past few years — is the Liam Neeson-starring Retribution. A better title might be Generic Neeson #9. I even looked up the title on IMDb just to make sure this was a new Neeson movie.
This is not to say that Regurgitation, er, I mean Retribution isn’t effectively made. Its director, the talented Nimród Antal (Control), does what he can to make Christopher Salmanpour’s (basically a TV procedural writer) by-the-numbers...

Mel Gibson and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson are toplining Boneyard, an indie crime-thriller that has begun shooting in Las Vegas.
Brian Van Holt, who starred opposite Kate McKinnon in limited series Jo vs. Carole, is also starring in the feature whose cast includes Nora Zehetner (The Right Stuff). Co-starring is Michael Sirow, most recently seen in SXSW movie The Wrath Of Becky.
Colin Bates, who produced the Halle Berry thriller Kidnap and the Arnold Schwarzenegger zombie drama Maggie, is producing the hot indie with Vincent McDaniel.
Inspired by true events, Boneyard tells of an FBI special agent, played by Gibson, who along with the Albuquerque police department, is hunting for a serial killer nicknamed The Bone Collector. The chief of police and one of his officers, however, have a contrary view of the manhunt, believing someone in their own department may be the killer.
Jackson is playing the chief while Van Holt plays the officer who is connected to the case through a missing niece.

Over 10 seasons, the hit show Friends saw more than its fair share of guest stars and recurring characters; some were more well-received than others. The six main cast members had many love interests over the years, some who barely lasted an episode and others who stayed a bit longer. Naturally, there were some characters, such as Chandler’s ex-girlfriend, Janice, who made appearances in every season of the show. Still, there was one who, although originally intended to be an important part of the sitcom, departed and was never seen again. Here is the real reason why one hated character on Friends left and never returned.
Why did ‘Friends’ fans hate Emily?
As any hardcore Friends fan knows, everyone was rooting for Ross and Rachel from the beginning. However, the two of them had only been broken up a short time when Ross met Emily Waltham, who, ironically, was the niece of Rachel’s boss.

It feels like a while since I’ve watched a horror anthology. Often highly entertaining and one of my favourite (if quite small) sub genres of horror. The Final Ride features just three stories and one wrap around that links them altogether.
All starting with a tale I’ll call Fitness. And it’s a pretty odd start to proceedings but I’m good with that. We see young couple buying their first home and everything seems perfect until they find some old VHS tapes hidden in the house. You might think you know where this s heading but you really don’t! Failure, competition and the pressure of staying relevant perennially looms on actors in Bollywood. Some can cope with it and some cannot. Those who cannot, often quit and opt for a different path in another fields.
The author has jotted out a few names, who courted the limelight for a while but could not continue their journey in the world of glitz and sparkle called Bollywood.
Imran Khan
Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan's nephew Imran Khan has quit Bollywood as an actor. He broke the news earlier this month. Imran made his debut in Hindi film industry in 2008 with the hit film "Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na". However, most of what followed was forgettable fare as "Luck", "Kidnap", "I Hate Luv Story" and "Break Ke Baad". There was "Delhi Belly" in 2011, but that was an odd success, clearly not enough. Imran's last big screen outing was in 2015 with Kangana Ranaut...

Having spent over 30 years in the business, you would imagine that Halle Berry has pretty much seen and done it all by this point. After all, the 53 year-old has won an Academy Award for Best Actress in addition to picking up an Emmy and a Golden Globe, starred in both one of the most popular comic book franchises in history as well as perhaps the single worst movie the genre has ever seen, and shown up everywhere from Bond to Bulworth.
Berry started to take a more hands-on role in her output when she produced forgotten 2017 action thriller Kidnap, but the John Wick: Chapter 3 star has now taken things to another level as she puts the finishing touches on her directorial debut Bruised, which she took over after The Notebook‘s Nick Cassavetes dropped out.

Halle Berry is going galactic. The actress will star alongside Josh Gad in “Moonfall,” a sci-fi space epic from director Roland Emmerich.
“Moonfall” centers on a mysterious force knocking the moon from its orbit around Earth, which sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. In response, a ragtag team launches an impossible last-ditch mission into space to land on the lunar surface and save Earth from annihilation.
Berry will play a Nasa astronaut-turned-administrator, whose previous space mission holds a clue about an impending catastrophe. Gad will portray a scientific genius who has correctly concluded that the moon has fallen out of its orbit. Emmerich will direct the movie from a script he penned with his “2012” co-writer Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen.
Lionsgate plans to release the movie in 2021 and has slated for production to begin this fall in Montreal, pending safety measures around the coronavirus pandemic.

Exclusive: As we step foot on the ground at the Sundance Film Festival today, we’ve confirmed that 12 people of the near 30-person staff at Aviron Pictures were pinkslipped on Friday and issued their final paychecks. Domestic theatrical distribution president Greg Forston and his team were eliminated, in addition to Evp Publicity and Promotion Claire Heath.
This melee comes in the wake of BlackRock, Aviron’s senior lender, alleging impropriety in the company’s structure in a contentious lawsuit that was filed December 17 in the Supreme Court of New York (read it here), specifically accusing the company’s founder and owner William Sadleir of forgery and fraud. This resulted in Sadleir being removed by BlackRock as the operating manager of his company’s subsidiary Aviron Pictures as well as other arms of his company.
At this point in time sources inform us that Sadleir is prepping a defense, and counter-claims against these accusations.

Aviron Pictures Chairman and Founder William Sadleir has been let go from the indie distributor for undisclosed reasons according to reports tonight.
Apparently, Sadleir was fired due to a contractual provision given to Aviron’s senior lender, BlackRock according to Variety who had the news.
Separately, we heard murmurs tonight that BlackRock is in the process of evaluating its position in independent film companies like Aviron; that the asset manager is looking into possibly increasing its financing in entertainment mergers and acquisitions.
Deadline first broke the news about the launch of Aviron back in May 2017. Out of the gate, they started off quite well with the rescue of Halle Berry suspense feature Kidnap from Relativity. The movie opened to $10M and made close to $31M at the domestic box office in August of that year. Aviron also had the sequel to the Rogue Pictures movie, The Strangers: Prey at Night...

Former TF1 Studio boss Tristan du Laz and French industry veterans Gaspard de Chavagnac, the former boss of Zodiak France, and Edouard Duprey, the popular producer-creative, are joining forces to launch Originals Factory, a co-production and distribution company dedicated to delivering movies to platforms.
During his tenure at TF1 Studio, du Laz started distributing some of the movies he acquired across diverse platforms in France and saw the large potential of some high-concept films, either such genre titles as Nicolas Boukhrief’s terrorism-themed “Made in France,” thrillers including “Kidnap” with Hally Berry, romantic comedies like “Adaline” with Blake Lively, and other niche movies that performed much better on pay VOD services than they would in theaters.

“The Upside,” a feel good film about the bond that forms between a wealthy quadriplegic and his caretaker, scored a surprising box office victory last weekend. The movie had to overcome a series of obstacles and setbacks before it topped charts.
In the weeks leading up to the drama’s release, star Kevin Hart had been the subject of countless headlines analyzing whether or not the comedian will host this year’s Oscars. The entertainer was offered the gig, but quickly stepped down after controversy sparked over homophobic jokes he made in the past. A little unwanted press, however, is nothing compared to the turmoil leading up to the movie’s theatrical debut.
Its rocky gestation to the big screen makes “The Upside,” which doubled industry expectations with a $19.5 million opening weekend, all the more impressive. An English-language remake of the French hit “Les Intouchables” was first announced in 2011, and...

ReFrame — a coalition of industry leaders founded by Women in Film and the Sundance Institute — and IMDBPro announced on Thursday a new data initiative to certify gender-balanced films and television shows, naming 12 films that received the newly-unveiled ReFrame Stamp.
The collaboration relies on data from IMDBPro to analyze films and television series to see how many women were involved in the production, and how much screen time female characters had. To earn the ReFrame Stamp, a film or TV show must meet a handful of requirements that call for women in key roles like starring, directing, producing, and writing. Additional points are awarded for having racial diversity. (The full criteria can be found here.)
“Through this collaboration we are committed to cultivating a more inclusive media landscape that illuminates the cultural and economic benefits of diversity in storytelling,” Cathy Schulman, ReFrame co-founder and president of Welle Entertainment, said in a statement.

For CinemaCon’s annual gathering of theater owners in Las Vegas, the Motion Picture Assn. of America released a new report showing a 6% drop in theatrical attendance in the U.S. and Canada in 2017, representing a 22-year low.
Though the breakout success of “Black Panther” is likely to quiet some worries about superhero fatigue, distributors and exhibitors working the mid-range and low-budget end of the spectrum are facing some doubts about the viability of their product in the age of tentpoles and streaming media.
The situation isn’t dire. A largely tepid year for specialty releases was offset by a strong awards-season showing for a handful of films. The breakouts of 2017 included “The Shape of Water” ($63.5 million), “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” ($54.2 million), “Lady Bird” ($48.9 million), “The Big Sick” ($42.8 million) and “Wind River” ($33.8 million).
“It’s definitely a tough time,” says Jeff Bock, box office analyst for the tracking firm Exhibitor Relations.

Exclusive: Sony Pictures is in the early stages of mounting a remake of the 1985 thriller Jagged Edge, as a star vehicle for Halle Berry. The effort is being led by Steven Bersch, the Sony Worldwide Acquisitions Group head who took over the genre arm Screen Gems. This one could very well be a standard Sony release, but they’re still working that out. The project is a priority and the studio has begun the search for the right writer to draft the new version.
Matti Leshem and Doug Belgrad will produce it. Scott Strauss will oversee for the studio.
Directed by Richard Marquand from a Joe Eszterhas script, the original starred Glenn Close, Jeff Bridges and Robert Loggia, latter of whom got an Oscar nomination. In the original, a San Francisco heiress is brutally murdered in her remote beach house. Her dashing newspaper publisher husband Jack is accused of committing the gruesome crime.

Relativity Media founder Ryan Kavanaugh took a nine-figure albatross off of his neck on Thursday, after a New York judge dismissed a contentious lawsuit stemming from his indie studio’s bankruptcy process. New York State Supreme Court Judge Charles E. Ramos dismissed a $110 million fraud claim from Rka Film Financing, the company’s third such claim since Relativity unraveled in 2015, that accused the studio head and his executives of misusing funds meant to promote films like Kristen Wiig’s “Masterminds” and Halle Berry’s “Kidnap.” “Although this is Rka’s third version of the complaint, not once has Rka listed the name of a...

Halle Berry has escaped Hollywood — albeit briefly.
The Kidnap actress extensively documented her Thanksgiving week trip to Bora Bora on Instagram, writing that she was “distancing myself from the bulls—.”
She began sharing her vacation snaps before even arriving to the French Polynesian island, taking a photo of the surrounding beautiful, crystal-blue waters which she added to her Instagram Story alongside multiple airplane emoji stickers.
Upon arrival she added, simply, “Yass Yass Yass.”
The 51-year-old actress later gushed over the tropical retreat’s beauty, writing that “Mornings are amazing…” alongside a picture of herself taking in the sights.
