- Having lapsed into alcoholism, Brian is booked into a rehabilitation clinic run by an order of monks. A chance remark by Father Bernard leads Brian to telephone Sandra late at night to tell her that there was an unexplained death in the clinic nine years previously. To prevent Brian obsessively investigating by himself, the team take up the enquiry into the death of a heroin addict, and infiltrate Gerry into the clinic as a compulsive sex addict. Brian's wife Esther discovers the whole team at the clinic, and is furious, but Sandra persuades her that it is the only way to ease the strain on Brian. By the time Gerry's cover has been blown, the team have discovered that the dead man, Robert Smith, probably took to drugs as a result of post-traumatic stress disorder, after witnessing or even participating in events in the civil wars which followed the break-up of Yugoslavia. They also discover that some of the staff and even the monks at the rehabilitation centre have secrets they wish to conceal or have concealed their origins.—hgallon
- Having fallen off the wagon, Brian is admitted to the Trinity Clinic run by Father Bernard and his monks to whom he is initially cynical. However he perks up when he learns of a potential unsolved crime, the death of a young heroin addict, Rob Smith, in mysterious circumstances nine years earlier. Gerry, posing as a sex addict, joins him undercover to look for clues. Jack and Sandra's interviews with past staff and patients draw blanks but Gerry suspects, rightly ,that Rob was the father of lay therapist Anna Greening's young son. Anna clearly loved Rob and believes she accidentally killed him but she tells the team that Rob was part Croat and became a drug addict after witnessing an atrocity in the Slav civil war. The instigator came after him and is still in the clinic.—don @ minifie-1
- Brian has fallen off the wagon and his wife Esther has given him an ultimatum: complete a rehabilitation program she has arranged for him or it's over. He agrees and soon finds himself in residence at Trinity Clinic, a religious hostel that deals with various types of addiction. An offhand comment from Father Bernard, the head of the program, leads Brian to think a murder was once committed there. Despite his promise to stay away from all things related to work, Brian soon has his colleagues on the case. Several years before, a heroin addict, Michael Smith, died from a broken neck he suffered after a fall down the stairs. He had a noticeably high level of methadone in his system, even though it was not used at the institute for treatment. Sandra and the team have a number of possible suspects including counselors, Brother Mark and Brother Raymond; psychiatrist Anna Greening; and the institute's former psychiatrist Curtis McCormack, now in private practice and an advocate of the use of methadone as a treatment for heroin addicts. With Gerry Standing now undercover at Trillium - as a sex addict, no less - they try to unravel a knot that leads them to Balkan war atrocities.—garykmcd
