Meryl Streep is lending her voice to the climate change crisis — literally.
The Oscar-winning icon narrates “Want to Tell a Great Story,” a new PSA that debuted today from the Sustainable Entertainment Alliance made in partnership with the Nrdc’s Rewrite the Future.
“Hey, want to see a story about climate change?” Streep asks in the opening seconds before a series of clips from Get Out, The Lego Movie and Anchorman show characters saying “no” in quick succession. “We get it, we really do. Climate change is scary. It can make us feel, well, a little anxious. And we turn to movies and TV to escape. But what if we changed the question?”
Streep does just that and alters the query: “Want to see a great story? Stories can engage with the climate even as they entertain. Whether they are dramatic or funny or stories of courage, stories about protecting what you love,...

Since hitting big in the early ’90s, Pharrell Williams hasn’t looked back and has cemented himself as one of the most influential artists of the 21st century. But apart from his expertise in the realm of music, the acclaimed rapper is also notable for delving into the fashion business and recently served as a producer on his Lego biopic, Piece by Piece.

Even though it seems there’s nothing that the singer can’t excel at, the rapper has been pretty vocal about his aversion to politics and the celebs who delves into it.

George Lucas’ Star Wars franchise stands as a cornerstone of modern science fiction. What began as an ambitious space opera has evolved into one of the most successful and beloved franchises in history. Over several decades, Star Wars has captivated multiple generations and remains one of the most well-crafted fictional universes ever created.
While the films are largely adored by fans, even the original trilogy faced criticism and issues. Although The Empire Strikes Back is often hailed as the franchise’s flawless installment, Lucas’s other films received their share of criticism from fans and commentators.
This report will focus on Return of the Jedi, particularly its most controversial element: the Ewoks. The new animated series Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy revisits the pivotal battle from Episode VI and reminds us that Lucas’ original plans were quite different.

There’s absolutely no doubt that Traveller’s Tales’ Lego video games are one of the most influential ones in the entire gaming genre. Not only have they provided players with new ways to interact with buildable toys, but they’ve also adapted tons of iconic film franchises in a glorious fashion.
The next Lego game is coming soon. (Image via Traveller’s Tales’ Games)
So far, players have been whisked away to Middle-earth, on wild DC and Marvel adventures, and through the galaxy far, far away, and even a massive crossover in the form of Lego Dimensions. However, with a new Warner Bros job listing, it seems like the next game in the franchise is on the horizon.

Toronto film festival: The endlessly inventive musician gets an unlikely yet deserving biopic told via plastic bricks – a big swing that more than pays off
Remember when we all thought The Lego Movie was going to be a hopelessly cynical cash grab? Well now we have the Lego musical biography in Piece By Piece, an authorised animated documentary that enlists the monolithic brand to tell the story of an eclectic, mega-popular artist. Check your cynicism, because the movie works!
The subject is Pharrell Williams, the singer and producer behind so many of our favourite beats – including Happy, the gratingly cheery earworm that helped sell the Despicable Me sequel and become a phenomenon all on its own. Packaging his story in brightly coloured Lego more than makes sense. Just listening to Pharrell’s music – which often mashes together odd elements from hip-hop, hard rock and disco – you picture a kid who...

There are some Saturday Night Live alums missed more than others. Many of them have gone on to have amazing careers, but we would certainly love to see them back. Even if it’s just for one night!
Many great comedic talents in movies got their start on Saturday Night Live. We’re looking at the likes of Eddie Murphy, Tina Fey, and yes, even Will Ferrell. SNL isn’t one of those shows that says goodbye to alums forever. There are some who do come back, which means that the chances of seeing others is up there. It all depends on schedules.
Here are five SNL alums we would love to see return next season, even just for one episode.

It may be hard to remember that Will Ferrell was on Saturday Night Live.

Once upon a time, in the magical land of Hollywood, a movie about the globally popular video game "Minecraft" was being made. Inspired perhaps by the success of "The Lego Movie," which took the rather simple block toys of childhood and created a cinematic miracle that made more than $468 million at the worldwide box office, Mojang Studios started looking at turning its own popular building-block game into a blockbuster movie. But who to helm it? "The Lego Movie" had Chris Miller and Phil Lord of "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" and "21 Jump Street" fame, and "Minecraft" needed someone with similar comedy chops.

Alan Wake 2 was a tremendous success for Remedy Entertainment if you look at it from the perspective of a fan and a consumer. Despite the critical reception and positive reviews from fans and critics alike, the game is struggling to make a fortune which is essential in this line of business. No amount of positive reviews from word of mouth will accumulate into real currency but there is one other thing fans should bear in mind about how one classic is being treated.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures unveiled the first teaser trailer for the “Minecraft” movie on Wednesday, offering a peek at the highly anticipated video game adaptation. In Piece By Piece, Morgan Neville (Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, 20 Feet from Stardom) tries to upend the conventions of the celebrity documentary using Lego animation. Yes, you read that correctly: Lego.
Premiering at Telluride before its October 11 theatrical release by Focus Features, Piece By Piece tells the life story of multihyphenate Pharrell Williams through elaborately designed set pieces composed of animations of the popular plastic building blocks. If there is anyone for whom this wouldn’t be a completely strange and off-kilter idea, it’s Williams, whose career has been defined by a buoyant irreverence. Starting with his childhood in Virginia Beach and delving into his wildly successful music career, Piece By Piece reveals, in sweet and inspiring terms, how the producer turned rapper turned singer turned fashion icon has never been one to be boxed in.
But while inventive, Neville’s doc can’t quite avoid the trappings of the celebrity-produced biopic,...

In this house we do not bash Ryan Gosling and we do not dish ignorance. But that’s just what one Hollywood producer tried to do, shrinking Gosling down in his attempt to puff up Glen Powell. And Glen Powell is having none of it.
In a social media response to this unnamed producer, Glen Powell wrote, “Gosling is a legend. I’m just Glenn”, a play of course on Gosling’s Oscar-nominated “I’m Just Ken.” That is categorically humble of Powell, who is one of the biggest stars going through films like Top Gun: Maverick and Twisters, not to mention terrific performances in works like Hit Man, which further demonstrated how diverse he can be. That he is remaining humble amidst all of this shows just why people continue to support him.

The video game curse seems to have lifted in recent years. For what seemed like decades before, movie studios, for years, could not get a decent live-action video game adaptation to the screen. Sure, there were dozens of them, but they had a reputation for being awful. Now that the hump seems to be overcome—not to mention studios making quality films out of seemingly unadaptable material like “The Lego Movie” and “Barbie”— the successful “Sonic The Hedgehog” franchise returns with its third installment.

“Stranger Things” star Millie Bobby Brown plans to turn her debut novel, “Nineteen Things,” into a feature film at Netflix.
Brown has close ties to the streaming behemoth because it’s home to the hugely popular television series that propelled her to fame. She’s also worked with Netflix on the Sherlock Holmes spinoff series “Enola Holmes” and the fantasy adventure “Damsel.” Brown will produce “Nineteen Things” through her company Pcma Productions and is in talks to star in the movie adaptation, according to Deadline, which broke the news of the project.
Netflix declined to comment.
Published in September 2023, “Nineteen Steps” is set during World War II and takes inspiration from Brown’s grandmother’s life. The story follows 18-year-old Nellie Morris, who is living in the east London neighborhood of Bethnal Green and falling for an American airman named Ray. As a Disney+ subscriber, I’m growing restless. I haven’t watched a Disney+ original since the wildly uneven “Obi-Wan Kenobi.” The service has dramatically slowed its original output, and it doesn’t look like there’s any strategy in place aside from 3-4 Marvel and Star Wars shows every year. The 68th BFI London Film Festival (9-20 October) will close with the UK premiere of Piece by Piece, the animated Lego biopic based on the life and career of musician and designer Pharrell Williams.
Williams and the film’s director Morgan Neville are confirmed to attend the gala screening.
Described as a “hugely inventive,” Piece by Piece is a unique biopic that explores the life and work of Pharrell Williams in the animated Lego form, a suggestion made by Williams during early conversations with Neville. Neville has said the choice of Lego acts as a metaphor for Williams’ creative vision of the world. The pic features a starry cast all rendered in Lego alongside Williams, including Jay-Z, Missy Elliot, Gwen Stefani, Busta Rhymes, and Snoop Dogg.

Hulu has ordered a documentary on a catfishing scheme that entrapped fans of a popular Canadian indie rock duo.
Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara, directed by true-crime specialist Erin Lee Carr, will debut October 18 on the streaming platform. The film revolves around Tegan and Sara Quin, gay twin sisters from Calgary, Alberta, who formed a rock band that attracted devoted followers, many of them from the LGBTQ+ community. But in 2011, Tegan’s personal computer files were hacked, setting off a calamitous chain of events.
“This is a sprawling yet intimate story of how Tegan’s identity was stolen and weaponized in a complex catfish scheme to ensnare members of this community,” states a release from Hulu, triggering a “severe ripple effect of mistrust, anxiety and self-doubt.”
The film, from Story Syndicate and Carr Lot Productions, attempts to identify whoever is responsible for concocting the scheme.

The trailer just dropped for Mr. Throwback, a new mockumentary series starring Happy Endings’ Adam Pally, Saturday Night Live’s Ego Nwodim and… The Golden State Warriors’ Steph Curry?
Produced by David Wain, Mr. Throwback actually looks pretty funny for a show starring an NBA point guard in a prominent role. Come to think of it, there have been more than a few solid comedies featuring pro basketball players, such as…
5 Marques Johnson in ‘White Men Can’t Jump’
When we think of White Men Can’t Jump, we tend to think of Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson, and of course, Jeopardy! champion Rosie Perez.
But it also features former NBA player Marques Johnson as Raymond, an aggrieved victim of Billy and Syd’s hustle. Johnson later revealed that the character was based on real-life basketball player Reggie Harding, who died tragically in 1972.

Amazon MGM Studios has entered into a multi-year film partnership with Scott Stuber, the former head of film at Netflix. As part of the pact, the streamer and studio will finance and release movies from Stuber’s new production company under United Artists, a languishing label that once operated under the auspice of MGM. In its heyday, United Artists released movies like “The Pink Panther,” “Rocky” “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” “Network” and the James Bond films. The agreement calls for Stuber and his soon-to-be launched company to produce several films annually. They will be released both theatrically and via Prime Video, Amazon’s streaming service.
Stuber’s new company will be based on Amazon MGM Studios’ Culver City lot. The pact is a first-look one, giving Amazon MGM Studios the initial crack at the projects Stuber develops. In addition, Stuber will be involved in all projects released by the new UA.

Music-centered biopics are one of the hottest commodities in Cinema today. From the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic to the retellings of the Whitney Houston and Elvis stories, it feels as if you’re a figure in music, you will get a biopic onscreen. However, there is an upcoming biopic about one of the biggest musicians out there. That is a little more unconventional. Pharrell Williams’ biopic, ‘Piece by Piece’, had a trailer before the new ‘Despicable Me’ movie. While many people were excited to see a Pharrell Williams biopic, many were confused as a biopic does not portray the Pharrell Williams story with actors. Rather, ‘Piece by Piece’ is a Lego movie, meaning that the Pharrell Williams story will be told with animated Lego characters. Netflix’s film adaptation of the seminal video game “Bioshock” with director Francis Lawrence is being “reconfigured” to be a “more personal” film with a reduced budget, producer Roy Lee (“The Lego Movie”) revealed on Thursday during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con.
The adaptation was first announced Feb. 2022 as a partnership between Netflix and the game’s producers 2K and Take-Two Interactive. The first “Bioshock” game, released in 2007, is set in a vast underwater city called Rapture created in the desire to foster a utopia, but instead has fallen into chaos and violence. The game’s twist-filled narrative and vibrant philosophical worldview captured gamers imaginations; sequels followed in 2010 and 2013, and the series has sold more than 39 million copies worldwide.
Since that announcement, however, Dan Lin replaced Scott Stuber as Netflix’s film chief, and Lin has refocused the streamer’s movie strategy to a more relatively modest approach from...

The 49th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival announced its full lineup of Galas and Special Presentations today in what is a complete embarrassment of riches as the event blasts off after last year’s actors strike with 29 titles having rights for sale.
Among those movies making their world premieres is the Angelina Jolie-directed war drama Without Blood, starring Salma Hayek and Demián Bichir, based on the Alessandro Baricco novel. There’s also Mike Leigh’s first movie in six years, Hard Truths, with Marianne Jean-Baptiste, which is billed as an “ongoing exploration of the contemporary world with a tragicomic study of human strengths and weaknesses.”
Gia Coppola has the drama The Last Showgirl, starring Pamela Anderson, Dave Bautista, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kiernan Shipka and Billie Lourd, which follows a seasoned stage dancer who must plan for her future when her show abruptly closes after a 30-year run.

With the start of new seasons, both The Boys and House of the Dragon returned to Nielsen’s streaming charts for the week of June 10-16. Neither one could reach the heights of Bridgerton, however, as the Netflix drama zoomed back to the No. 1 overall spot with the release of season three’s second half.
Bridgerton amassed 3.47 billion minutes of viewing for the week — the biggest single-week total for any show so far this year, beating the 3.04 billion for Fool Me Once in early January. Almost 2.5 billion of Bridgerton’s minutes, or more than 70 percent of the total, were for the four episodes that premiered June 13.
The Boys also opened its fourth season on Prime Video on June 13, and the show grabbed 1.19 billion minutes of watch time for the week (including viewing of previous seasons). That’s the largest one-week total for the show since Nielsen began releasing weekly streaming...

While the zombie apocalypse rages, there’s really only one true plan: go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint and wait for all of it to blow over. But that might not work out in the Lego version of Shaun of the Dead. No, we’re not talking about an upcoming Lego Shaun of the Dead movie or video game (although how awesome would that be?), but rather an actual Lego Shaun of the Dead that was so close to being put into production…until it was deemed that the blood, language and beer might not be appropriate for their demographic.

The big question for Fortnite players now is: do you prefer Season Og or Reload? Reload was added to the game in late June; essentially, it is a 40-player game mode that allows team members to reboot as long as one member is still alive.
Fortnite Og last year saw a return to classic seasons, but with a few twists. But now fans have been discussing which mode they prefer, and a clear winner seems to have been found.

Will Forte is checking into The Four Seasons comedy series starring Tina Fey, Steve Carell, and more
The upcoming reimagining of The Four Seasons needs to make some room because Will Forte is checking in. Universal Television is producing the all-new series adaptation from Tina Fey, Land Fisher, and Tracey Wigfield. Forte joins Fey, Steve Carell, Colman Domingo, Kerri Kenney-Silver, and Erika Henningsen for the show written by Fey, Fisher, and Wigfield.
The Four Seasons, a retread of the 1981 Universal movie of the same name, is a co-creation between Fey, her 30 Rock co-star Lang Fisher, and Tracey Wigfield. Details about Forte’s character remain a mystery, though the cast list for Alan Alda’s 1981 comedy could provide some clues. In 1981’s The Four Seasons, three couples vacation together every season. After one couple divorces, feelings of betrayal and more spawn criticisms of one another, but the things that keep them together are stronger than those that might tear them apart. Steven Mnuchin keeps buying Lionsgate.
The former banker and Treasury Secretary under President Trump has in the last few weeks acquired another $10 million or so in shares of entertainment company, bringing his stake to 11 percent.
According to a securities filing, Mnuchin’s Liberty 77 Capital Partners acquired the shares between June 6 and June 17, at prices ranging from $7.75 per share to $8.30 per share.
Mnuchin has been on a Lionsgate buying spree ever since initially disclosing a 5.5 percent stake back in September. Earlier this year he upped his stake to 7.9 percent, with the new disclosure pushing him over the 10 percent threshold.
It is still not entirely clear what Mnuchin’s ultimate goal is with Lionsgate, though a filing says that the purchases were “made for investment purposes.” Lionsgate declined to comment and Mnuchin’s firm did not respond to a request for comment.
