Deadpool and Wolverine did end up featuring a handful of surprise cameos (though most of them actually turned out to be minor supporting roles), but nothing compared to the amount of characters that were rumored in the build-up to the movie's release.
Director Shawn Levy has said that some fake information was released in order to throw the scoopers off, which may account for the lack of original X-Men and the Fantastic Four (minus Chris Evans' Johnny Storm).
Whether Evans' cast-mates were ever considered is not clear, but star Ryan Reynolds has now revealed that the version of Marvel's First Family we met in the notorious 2015 Fantastic Four (usually stylized as Fant4stic) reboot were!

As Emma Corrin joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they were dealt the unfortunate task of eliminating a fan favorite.
The Deadpool & Wolverine star said they were “absoooolutely mad” that their supervillain character Cassandra Nova killed Chris Evans‘ Human Torch during a surprise cameo after he last played the Marvel superhero in the 2005 and ’07 Fantastic Four movies.
“I felt so bad when we were in the screening the other day,” Corrin told British GQ. “Because we watched it after the New York premiere with all these Lincoln Center full of fans, and everyone was so excited when they see him appear on screen, and then after three minutes, I’ve killed him. I felt terrible. I was hiding in my seat. Yeah, it was weird. Not something I thought I’d be doing if you’d asked me a few years ago.”

Spoiler Alert !!!This article contains spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine.
Deadpool & Wolverine brought back a host of Marvel Legacy characters that have been absent from the screen since way before the MCU. Be it Jennifer Garner’s Elektra from 2003’s Daredevil, Wesley Snipes from the Blade trilogy, or Chris Evans’ Human Torch from Fantastic Four (2005), these characters had been mostly absent from the public zeitgeist since the dawn of the MCU in 2008. Not only that, but these characters were already kinda old when Robert Downey Jr. began his work as Iron Man in the MCU.

Apart from these legacy characters, Deadpool & Wolverine also brought in a particular character from an unproduced Marvel movie, fulfilling a long-awaited pipe dream for Channing Tatum: letting him essay the role of Gambit. When it comes to comic book adaptations, major franchises like Marvel and DC often face significant issues with their films’ reception, based on casting choices. Take for example the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot, which struggled mightily with Michael B. Jordan’s version of Human Torch after Chris Evans’ charming portrayal of Johnny Storm.

This year’s Sdcc showcased many exciting updates for the future of the MCU. The most significant revelation was the shift in focus from Kang in the Multiversal Saga. What was previously titled ‘Avengers: Kang Dynasty’ has now been renamed ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ with Robert Downey Jr. set to play Doctor Doom.
Currently, little is known about the upcoming film beyond its release date of May 1, 2026, and that it will feature Doctor Doom, Doctor Strange, the Fantastic Four, and the Thunderbolts.
There’s been a lot of speculation about what the movie might adapt, but our biggest hint came from Alex Perez’s June Discord Q&a.
Perez suggested that ‘Secret Wars’ might be split into two parts due to the numerous storylines that can’t be condensed into a single 2-hour film. There’s also talk of potentially having multiple central antagonists.

This year’s Sdcc revealed plenty of interesting things for the future of the MCU. By far the most important part of the presentation was a revelation that Multiversal Saga is moving away from Kang. What was formerly known as ‘Avengers: Kang Dynasty’ is now retitled ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ with Rober Downey Jr. set to portray Doctor Doom.
Next to nothin is known about the upcoming movie except for a release date and the fact that it’s going to include Doom, Strange, Fantastic Four, and Thunderbolts.
There are plenty of speculations going around on what the movie might adapt but our biggest clue definitely came from Alex Perez’s June Discord Q&a.
According to Perez Secret Wars’ might end up being split into two parts because there are so many storylines that can’t fit into a single 2-hour film. There’s even talk about having more than one central antagonist.

Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” is set to hit between $438-$440 million globally this weekend. The opening also puts the film in eighth place on the highest domestic opening list.
This weekend, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman brought the boom with the third “Deadpool” film. The film is expected to bring in around $205 million at the domestic box office. This puts the film in eighth place above “Black Panther” ($202 million) and behind “The Avengers” ($207 million.) The highest film spot is for “Avengers: End Game” at $357 million.
Internationally, the film hit about $233 million.
It’s not bad for an R-rated film. Traditionally, these films don’t perform as well because the audience is more limited, but “Deadpool & Wolverine” is slashing its way through and winning big at the box office.
Estimates.
Initial estimates for the domestic box office were around $160-$170 million; even higher estimates were at $190 million to maybe $200 million.

Phase 4 had a bit of a rocky start, thanks to the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. It had a few highlights, with films like Spider-Man: No Way Home, but also some lows, like The Eternals. Phase 5, on the other hand, has had a very rough time, with movies like Ant-Man 3 and The Marvels outright losing money. So, we will have to see what is in store for 2025 and beyond.
The first segment talked about the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World, which stars Anthony Mackie as the lead hero. Danny Ramirez came out on stage and was presented as the new Falcon, and Giancarlo Esposito revealed that he would be playing Sidewinder.

Marvel Studios last held a Hall H panel at the San Diego Comic-Con in 2022; during that, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars were both announced for a 2025 release.
A lot has changed since then, including the Multiverse Saga's focus! Kang is out and Doctor Doom is in, with Robert Downey Jr. set to make his MCU return as Victor Von Doom. How this links up to his time as Iron Man, if indeed it does, remains to be seen.
After the Russo Brothers were announced as the directors of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, the filmmakers pointed out that Doctor Doom is one of the most complex characters in the Marvel Universe, with a truly great actor needed to bring him to life.
As Feige and the Russos prepared to close out the presentation, robed figures dressed in Doctor Doom masks took the stage and then...

There was a time when movie studios rarely shared the footage screened in Hall H at Comic-Con with fans online.
However, when the Suicide Squad trailer almost immediately leaked in 2015, it forced Warner Bros.' hand (which was unprecedented at the time) and we've since grown used to those sneak peeks hitting social media right after their San Diego premieres.
Yesterday evening, Marvel Studios showcased Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Footage was shown from each of those movies, only for none of it to be released online!
It's just like old times today, though, as the early pre-production footage for the Fantastic Four reboot is currently doing the rounds on social media. While we're unable to share the footage with you here, it can be found on r/LeaksAndRumors.

“You were an X-Man. You were the X-Man.” This line from Deadpool & Wolverine will likely become a classic among geek circles since it describes the importance of Hugh Jackman’s Logan, both to the Fox era of X-Men and to the brand as a whole. With that said, Deadpool & Wolverine was about the legacy of one specific Wolverine—or two, at any rate. And neither seems likely to be the Wolverine of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Chris Evans might have made a name for himself with his work as Captain America in the MCU, but the actor made his superhero debut as The Human Torch in the fondly remembered 2005’s Fantastic Four. While the film might not have been a critical or commercial success, a slew of fans began their journey into superhero cinema with the film and its sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

Even though the film was made way back in 2005 when CGI was still finding its footing in the industry, and with a budget nowhere close to what a summer blockbuster would require today, Fantastic Four was able to deliver one of the most iconic superhero transformation scenes with Chris Evans’ Johnny Storm, one that fans are sure still holds up today.

Marvel Studios showed some very early footage from The Fantastic Four: First Steps at Comic-Con yesterday (you can read a full description here) and we now have a first look at the McU's Baxter Building!
The movie, which takes place in a retro-future '60s' setting, doesn't take place on Earth-616. However, with Marvel's First Family confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, it's clear they're going to play a big role in the Multiverse Saga.
Whether the Sacred Timeline will get its own Baxter Building remains to be seen; we see here just how different the alternate reality New York looks, though, and the team's base is arguably way cooler than Avengers Tower.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, The Fantastic Four: First Steps director Matt Shakman explained why this movie won't deliver yet another origin story.

Whilst last night in many ways represented Marvel Studios' moment in the spotlight at this year's Comic-Con in San Diego, earlier in the evening comic franchise fans were also treated to a panel for Matt Reeves and Craig Zobel's hotly anticipated HBO Original The Batman spin-off series The Penguin. And during the event, star Colin Farrell beamed into Hall H via Zoom to introduce a brand new trailer for his upcoming crime series, set a week after Paul Dano's Riddler flooded Gotham at the end of The Batman. Check it out below:
As you'll recall, a power vacuum opened up in Gotham following the death of mob boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) in Reeves' 2022 take on the Caped Crusader, and as crime (and a lot of water) continues to flood the streets of the city in The Penguin, Farrell's Oz Cobb clearly has his eyes set on taking over.

If there's a big tentpole property on television or film, chances are high that Pedro Pascal is either in it or was at one point, up for a role.
It seems whenever there's a major role to be cast, Pascal's name inevitably surfaces at some point.
Case in point, he'll be seen in Avengers: Doomsday which is scheduled to be released on May 1, 2026, and The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is slated to arrive in theaters on May 22, 2026- arguably the two biggest films releasing that year.
And those films will come after Pascal has been seen in The Wild Robot, Gladiator II, season 2 of The Last of Us, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
As someone who can seemingly join any franchise he wants,THR asked Pascal why he said yes to the McU's Fantastic Four reboot.

Marvel had fans buzzing after their epic reveal of Galactus at Comic-Con last year. During their panel, they showed us some awesome concept footage of everyone’s favorite planet-eater. We got our first glimpse of Ralph Ineson playing the role in the MCU. Unlike the weird cloud version from the old Fantastic Four movie, this Galactus looked just like he does in the comics – only bigger than ever.
I have to admit, I was a little worried when I first saw him towering over a skyscraper. He seemed huge, but will he really look as big as a planet when we see him on the big screen? Only time will tell! After the footage, the crowd went nuts.
But that wasn’t even the coolest part. Later that night, Marvel broke the world record with their insane drone show over the baseball stadium. They projected a mammoth image of Galactus’s head,...

Fans got way more than they bargained for at San Diego Comic-Con last month. Marvel Studios announced some major changes that nobody saw coming. Most shockingly – Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but not as Iron Man!
It was totally unexpected when Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, revealed Downey Jr. will step into the role of Victor Von Doom in the upcoming Fantastic Four movie. You guys remember Iron Man, right? Downey Jr. played that super cool hero for years. Now instead of saving the day, his new part will be as the evil Dr. Doom – the Fantastic Four’s biggest enemy. Pretty wild change, if you ask me!
Downey Jr.’s big reveal was straight-up awesome. He walked on stage wearing Doom’s signature green cloak and mask. When he took it off, the crowd went nuts cheering for him. “New face,...

Undoubtedly, the biggest shock of the night from Marvel Studios' Hall H panel at Sdcc was the news that Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. would be returning to the MCU. However, he won't be returning as Tony Stark, instead, he'll be portraying an alternate universe version of Doctor Doom.
Downey Jr.'s Doom is confirmed to appear in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, however, online rumors have already swirled that Rdj's new character will actually show up first in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Several online scoopers are reporting that they received inside info about Downey's return but didn't feel confident enough to post the news before Marvel made the official announcement.
Collider caught up with The Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman, shortly after the Sdcc panel and asked whether he knew about Robert Downey Jr.'s return, prior to the Hall H extravaganza.
"It’s incredible exciting.

Riding the record-breaking, opening weekend high of "Deadpool & Wolverine," Marvel Studios took the San Diego Comic Con's Hall H stage on Saturday night for its first full-stride victory lap in a shockingly long time. This is, after all, a studio that has mostly dominated the box office since "The Avengers" brought the Marvel Cinematic Universe together for an epochal superhero throwdown. Comic book fans had been dreaming of this movie for decades. Non-fans had been wired for it since Jon Favreau's "Iron Man," if not earlier.
12 years ago, this anticipation caught many in the film industry by surprise. If they'd known Marvel superheroes could be the cowboys of the 21st century, they probably would've taken this genre much more seriously after the surprise success of Tim Burton's "Batman" in 1989. And that's the thing with the superhero genre in this business. For a long time, these properties were...

Fantastic Four villain Galactus loomed large over San Diego Comic-Con 2024… literally. Following Marvel’s surprise panel/screening for Deadpool & Wolverine on Thursday, the studio launched comic book-themed drone and fireworks into the San Diego night sky. Highlighting that show was the unmistakable silhouette of Marvel’s big bad purple planet-eater.
When Marvel’s proper panel rolled around on Saturday evening, however, it was clear that they had much bigger plans for Galactus than merely a light show. The studio’s presentation covered upcoming films Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and Fantastic Four: First Steps. For the lattermost movie, studio head Kevin Feige and Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman warned that original footage didn’t yet exist because filming won’t begin until July 30 in the UK.
