The Los Angeles Festival of Movies has announced dates for the festival’s second edition, set to take place April 3-6.
The first festival, co-presented by Mubi and the Mezzanine film non-profit, drew a young and enthusiastic crowd to L.A. venues on the eastern side of town for events including the West Coast premiere of “I Saw the TV Glow” and “Good One,” as well as the first episode of HBO’s documentary series “Ren Faire,” and 4K restorations including Chantal Akerman’s “Toute Une Nuit.”
Mezzanine and the festival will also present fall and winter screening events, to be announced.
“Independent cinema is alive and well in Los Angeles,” said Lafm director of programming Micah Gottlieb. “We were overwhelmed by the response to our inaugural festival, and we’re launching this second edition feeling energized and inspired by the local film community.”

Jane Schoenbrun has discussed “dancing with the devil” a.k.a., senior execs in Hollywood’s film industry, while making hit film I Saw the TV Glow.
Trans director Schoenbrun spoke candidly at the San Sebastian Film Festival event Wednesday afternoon following a screening of the movie, taking the time to praise Emma Stone, whose production company Fruit Tree — co-founded with her husband, Dave McCary — financed the project.
“They had essentially said to me, ‘We just want to use our power,'” Schoenbrun explained. “Like, this is Emma Stone: ‘We want to use my power to help people like you make movies.’ And I was like, ‘Cool, I’ll take your power!’ She was great and so supportive. She got on all of the Zoom pitches and having Emma Stone in the room advocating for you does help you seem like an adult and not a weirdo.”

Could “Challengers,” which moved from an awards season slot last year due to the strikes to a less prestigious March release date this year, actually be a contender after all? The psychosexual tennis drama generated a lot of buzz and a fairly impressive box office performance, and it wouldn’t be crazy to wonder if nominations for Zendaya (Best Actress), Josh O’Connor (Best Supporting Actor), and Justin Kuritzkes (Best Original Screenplay) are possible. Ok, they’re admittedly pretty unlikely, but we do predict that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross should be nominated for their pounding electronic score. The film is now available to stream on Prime Video.
“Challengers,” which hails from director Luca Guadagnino, is about a bizarre love triangle between Tashi (Zendaya), a tennis phenom whose career was derailed by an injury, her husband Art (Mike Faist), who became a superstar under her tutelage but is exhausted by his life,...

A24’s Civil War arrived on the Max streaming service last weekend, and I Saw The TV Glow will appear in just a few days. But it actually looks like A24’s entire 2024 slate will be streaming on Max before long — two more of the studio’s recent pictures, Tuesday and Maxxxine, were just announced for October streaming debuts. Tuesday is one of A24’s more out-there ventures. It stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the mother of a teenage daughter (played by Lola Petticrew) whom she is trying to keep out of the hands of Death. Death, in this movie, is personified by a talking parrot, and the bird was just about to claim Tuesday until he had a panic attack right before he had to do the job. Tuesday felt sorry for Death and lent the bird her vape pen, and that’s how she got away. You can be...

If you didn't grow up on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and happened to catch "one of the best horror movies of 2024 in "I Saw the TV Glow," much of Jane Schoenbrun's film might have gone over your head. The film is indebted to "Buffy" in many ways, most obviously with its show-within-a-film "The Pink Opaque," which takes its cues from the beloved WB/CW series. But there's also a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo from Amber Benson, who for three seasons of "Buffy" played witch Tara Maclay.
Alongside co-star Alyson Hannigan, who played Willow Rosenberg, Benson would depict one of TV's first serious relationships between two women. "Buffy" never treated Willow and Tara's love as anything other than serious and meaningful, and steered well clear of using it as some sort of punchline or curio. As such, Benson has become a beloved figure of LGBTQ empowerment ever since. This is partly...

Films like “I Saw the TV Glow” and “The People’s Joker” have made trans narratives a big part of arthouse cinema this year. That direction continues this fall with the musical crime comedy “Emilia Pérez,” a film about a drug cartel leader who looks to leave her former life behind by transitioning.
Karla Sofía Gascón, who plays the titular cartel leader, told TheWrap’s editor-in-chief Sharon Waxman at our 2024 TIFF Studio sponsored by Moët & Chandon and Boss Design that she searches for roles that are as far removed from her real-life experience as possible — and what could be more far removed than playing a drug lord?
“I think that part of our job as actors and actresses is really to be able to fully understand human beings and to be able to promote an evolution in the people that watch us thanks to this understanding,” she said. “So for me,...

The Smashing Pumpkins’ “1979” doesn’t sound much like the music of the 1970s. Instead, it became one of the most beloved alternative rock songs of the 1990s, even though it wasn’t supposed to be a song. The Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan seemed blindsided by his band’s success during that era.
The Smashing Pumpkins’ ‘1979’ was based on a poem Billy Corgan forgot
During a 2023 interview with Variety, Corgan revealed the oddball history of his band’s biggest hit: “1979.” It’s easy to pin the song’s success on the 1990s wave of nostalgia for the 1970s. “1979” doesn’t sound much like the Bee Gees or Paul McCartney & Wings, but it makes the late 1970s sound like a lot of fun, including to people who weren’t born yet. With that in mind, it’s incredible that the initial version of “1979” was about the 1980s, not the 1970s.

The use of prominent virtual assistants, such as Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa, Microsoft’s Cortana, Samsung’s Bixby, and Ibm’s Watson, is a popular subject. Popular and prominent home service devices have become so commonplace in society that they have recently found their way into the lexicon of worldwide storytelling. The new Blumhouse film, AfrAId, is no exception.
Many of these movies, like the acclaimed film Her (and you can even go farther back to 2001: A Space Odyssey), can be seen in cinemas, on televisions, and on phones via streaming services near you. They have become such staples that I still hope Ask Jeeves will return. These films can be thoughtful, enlightening, and even entertaining.
However, AfrAId is not one of them.

Zia Anger is haunted by a long-abandoned film project in her feature directorial debut “My First Film.” A filmmaker, performance artist, and celebrated director of music videos for the likes of Beach House, Angel Olsen, Mitski, and Zola Jesus, Anger fuses ideas from that unrealized project with echoes of a touring stage piece she started in 2018 for this Mubi release, out at the end of August. Odessa Young stands in for Anger as the young filmmaker Vita, who 15 years before started making a film about a young woman adrift after becoming pregnant. IndieWire shares the exclusive trailer for the film below.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Vita (Odessa Young) revisits her first chaotic attempt at filmmaking — a semi-autobiographical feature made 15 years prior about a young woman who decides to leave home after becoming pregnant. Blending past with present, reality with fiction, Zia Anger’s ‘debut’ film navigates the tumultuous intersection...

Sean Wang’s Sundance sensation Dìdi is a gorgeously told tale of growing up in the late noughties. Here’s our review.
Sean Wang’s Dìdi does something rather miraculous. It manages to capture a sense of a very specific time with its details while also telling a universal coming-of-age story from a unique point of view. If you grew up in the 2000s, listened to Paramore and spent your afternoons watching Youtube videos, this is a film for you.
Chris Wang (Izaac Wang) is a teenager growing up in California in 2008. He spends his free time skateboarding and causing mayhem with his friends while harbouring a crush on schoolmate Madi and worrying about how to kiss girls. Coming from a Taiwanese-American family, Chris is constantly pulled in different directions by the two cultures and identities.
In many ways, Dìdi feels almost like a prequel to Bo Burnham’s excellent Eight Grade.

I Saw The TV Glow uses nostalgia and fandom to say something profound. Deadpool & Wolverine, er, doesn’t. Isn’t it time for a grown-up conversation about this?
In a moment early on in Deadpool & Wolverine, out this weekend, a bunch of characters stand around and watch Wolverine die.
This isn’t as spoilery a declaration as you might think, because if you’re the sort of person who cares about Deadpool & Wolverine spoilers, you’ve probably seen this scene multiple times already. Through tears and a palpable sense of awe, Deadpool, Matthew Macfadyan and a room full of Tva agents are watching the end of 2017’s Logan.
Also in UK cinemas this weekend (and with one-millionth of the marketing budget) is Jane Schoenbrun’s psychological horror, I Saw The TV Glow. In it, two young introverts, played by Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine, find common ground...

Of all the below-the-line categories at the Oscars, Best Original Score is the most difficult to predict early on due to the finicky nature of the music branch of the academy. Scores that sound like frontrunners are disqualified for a variety of reasons, from the number of credited composers to the amount of previously recorded music used. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Original Score.)
Starting with the 2019 Oscars, the academy released a shortlist of 15 contenders. We got this year’s roster of semi-finalists on December 17, 2024. A second round of voting by the members of the music branch, again using preferential voting, will cut these 15 down to the final five nominees. These will be announced, along with the final contenders in all of the other competitive categories on January 17. The entire voting membership of the academy will then vote for the winners, which will be revealed...

Predicting Best Original Song at the Oscars is made more difficult by the three-stage process. In years past, many seemingly sure-fire contenders were deemed to be ineligible. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Original Song.)
