The Other Guys Director Adam McKay Wanted to Make ‘The Boys’ Movie Trilogy Back in 2008 - Main Image
Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys has become one of the most celebrated comic book adaptations today, but the series could have ended up being a whole trilogy of movies that came out on the big screen.
As it turns out, there was actually a plan to make a whole trilogy based on The Boys around the same time that Iron Man came out; but development didn’t push through, and fans got the show that’s currently streaming on Prime.
According to Rolling Stone, director Adam McKay was actually developing an adaptation of The Boys which they were planning to turn into a trilogy of films. Development apparently went as far as a finished screenplay and demo animatics, but it never got the greenlight because it was ‘pre-mcu Hollywood’.

WARNING: Season 4, Episode 4 spoilers ahead
The fourth episode of “The Boys” Season 4 has landed, and it's already being regarded as the best of the season so far. With a stellar 9.1 star rating on IMDb, the episode titled “Wisdom of the Ages” has fans buzzing about its shocking twists and turns. The episode centers around Vought's new show "Truth Bomb" hosted by the supe Firecracker (Valorie Curry). While the Boys attempt to blackmail Firecracker, she outmaneuvers them by leaking the details herself. Having turned the tables, she then calls out Starlight (Erin Moriarty) with another shocking allegation.
Meanwhile, A-Train (Jessie T. Usher) goes snooping around Homelander’s apartment, snatching a vial of Compound V and coming face-to-face with Ashley (Colby Minifie), who’s also doing some creeping of her own. Both are putting themselves at considerable risk, as Homelander (Antony Starr) has been on a rampage killing Vought employees.
One of the more gripping storylines involves Butcher's (Karl Urban) deteriorating health condition. With a mysterious worm-like creature burrowing into his brain, speculation is rife that his previous use of Compound V has given rise to a sentient illness. The parallels to the animated "Diabolical" spin-off series could hint at darker consequences ahead.
Meanwhile, the supe-killing virus fans first saw in “Gen V” raises concerns about its potential impact on newly powered characters like Hughie's father (Simon Pegg). If released, the virus may strip their abilities or lead to fatal outcomes. The episode's closing moments suggest Hughie's mother slips his father Compound V after Hughie gets cold feet.
As of this writing, “Wisdom of the Ages” is the third-highest rated episode of the series on IMDb. The top-rated episode is Season 3’s “Herogasm” at 9.6/10, followed by the Season 2 finale “What I Know” at 9.4. The high rating for the mid-season episode is a good sign for the season’s progression, as the first three episodes’ average of 7.6 was well below the overall series average of 8.7.

This post contains spoilers for "The Boys."
There's a reason why "The Boys" keeps Antony Starr's Homelander around while crafting some of its most significant and compelling storylines. One of the most unpredictably dangerous Supes manufactured by Vought, Homelander's presence provides impetus to the titular "Boys" to keep playing such a rigged game, as killing the milk-drinking Supe is a part of the show's endgame. Starr has elevated Homelander into a figure mired in complexities; he imparts the character with a singular brand of desperation-fueled evil that only becomes more twisted with each passing season. Starr's turn as Homelander cements the character's idiosyncratic presence within the "Boys" universe, where almost every iteration of the Supe benefits from the actor's remarkably layered and scene-stealing performance.
Keeping this in mind, it is no surprise that Starr voiced Homelander both in the animated anthology series "The Boys Presents: Diabolical" and the "Call of Duty" games,...

Well, well, how quickly things change. All along, the original plan for Prime Video's hit superhero supervillain series "The Boys" has been to span a total of five seasons -- at least according to creator Eric Kripke's response to a question-and-answer session on Twitter back in October of 2020. But having couched it in terms of another failed prediction he once made while working on "Supernatural," which he similarly envisioned to last five seasons and ended up watching it expand to 15, Kripke knows better than anyone that writers make plans and the television gods laugh. Well, consider them well and truly busting a gut over today's news that the creative's initial idea for "The Boys" is, in fact, coming to fruition after all. Just days before season 4 debuts, Kripke has taken to social media (via Variety) to announce that the upcoming fifth season will also be the show's last. As...

The Boys— an ultimate satire on superheroes and several cultural phenomena has brought pure delight to fans with a new perspective towards the very cinematic genre. The series extended into a universe with a few spin-offs including, Gen V, the animated series The Boys: Diabolical, with The Boys: Mexico coming up.

Now, as fans have wondered what season 4 of the series would entail, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke was gracious enough to clue us in revealing that the upcoming season will also take a jibe at the upcoming United States election. This would definitely provide the relevance that the show needed with its narrative.

Eric Kripke had originally said that he envisioned The Boys lasting “five seasons total,” but the Prime Video series was renewed for a fifth season last month, with no indication it would be the last. Plans obviously change, and while Kripke may not know when The Boys will conclude, he does have an ending in mind for when that day comes.
“You can’t build a show that’s about these two forces of Homelander and Butcher slowly closing in on each other without bringing that to a head,” Kripke told Empire. “Whenever that last episode occurs, I know what happens.” The Boys has been a big success for Prime Video, turning into a full-on franchise with various spin-offs, including Gen V, The Boys: Diabolical, and the upcoming The Boys: Mexico. As the franchise expands, Kripke says he knows how important it is “that we don’t f***ing sell out.

Every time a new season of The Boys arrives, it does so with a valid question: how can it possibly top what came last time? With each successive season, Prime Video’s satirical superhero series – in which powered-up individuals exist, and are largely monstrous people – ups the ante on its shocking scenes, gratuitous gore, and pointed political storytelling. Now, Season 4 is imminent, following the wilder-than-ever Season 3, and the debauched antics of YA spin-off Gen V – while Season 5 has already been confirmed to follow, promising more story to come in the war between Superman-alike psychopath Homelander (Antony Starr), and his human nemesis Billy Butcher (Karl Urban).
But fear not – good shows can’t last forever, and showrunner Eric Kripke has a proper ending in mind for The Boys, whenever that time arises. “You can’t build a show that’s about these two forces of Homelander and Butcher slowly closing in...

The fourth season of The Boys has yet to start. Still, a listing on the Film & Television Industry Alliance website (Production List) says production for The Boys Season 5 begins on April 08, 2024, with plans to shoot until August 22, 2024. While this listing is not an official announcement, the series will likely continue racking up viewership numbers on Prime Video, making a Season 5 renewal inevitable.
Meanwhile, The Boys Season 4 premieres in 2024, though no official premiere date has been announced. The Boys Season 4 picks up about a month after the Gen V Season 1 finale. When Season 4 begins, Butcher knows about Indira Shetty’s (Shelley Conn) engineered virus to kill Supes. After a lengthy hiatus and the premiere of the spin-off series “Gen V,” the wait for new episodes of “The Boys” is finally coming to an end. Eric Kripke’s satirical superhero franchise returns to Prime Video in 2024, and a new trailer promises that Season 4 will be every bit as dramatic (and R-rated) as its predecessors.
The new trailer, which debuted at Ccxp São Paulo on Saturday, shows the supes dealing with the aftermath of their battle with Homelander (Anthony Starr) and preparing for a looming election as the existence of superheroes becomes an increasingly polarizing topic in America.
In addition to returning stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Colby Minifie, Claudia Doumit, and Cameron Crovetti, Season 4 sees Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan joining the cast.

Fans of the hit series “The Boys” have something exciting to look forward to. A new spinoff titled “The Boys: Mexico” is in the making, and it’s got some big names attached to it. Written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, known for his work on “Blue Beetle” and Sony’s upcoming “El Muerto,” this series promises to expand the universe of “The Boys” in new and exciting ways.
According to Deadline, the project is still in its early stages, with casting underway and the search for a co-showrunner to work alongside Dunnet-Alcocer. What’s really stirring up interest is the involvement of Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal, both of whom are set to executive produce. There’s also a buzz that they might even step in front of the camera for supporting roles.

"The Boys" universe is continuing to expand — and now the franchise is headed to Mexico. That's right! Amazon MGM Studios is now developing another show in the ever-growing universe based on the comic books by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson titled "The Boys: Mexico." While it's still in the very early stages, the show has assembled a pretty impressive team behind the scenes to get the ball rolling.
According to Deadline, Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer is set to write and executive produce the new Mexican-set spin-off. What's more, Gabriel Luna ("Andor") and Gael García Bernal ("Werewolf by Night") are also on board as executive producers and might also appear on screen, though they wouldn't be taking on major roles. Plot details for the series currently remain under wraps but the report states that the series is expected to eventually film in Mexico, rather than in the U.S. or Canada, for example.

The world of “The Boys” could soon be expanding to Mexico.
According to sources, Amazon is currently developing a Spanish-language spinoff of their popular dark superhero series based on the Garth Ennis/Darick Robertson comic books that would be set in Mexico City. Exact plot details remain under wraps.
Like “The Boys,” it would be produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. Sources say that Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer is attached to write. Dunnet-Alcocer most recently wrote the screenplay for the DC film “Blue Beetle” starring Xolo Maridueña. “The Boys” creator Erik Kripke would executive produce via Kripke Enterprises along with Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and James Weaver of Point Grey Pictures, and Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Film. Sources also say that Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal would executive produce under their La Corriente del Golfo banner, though deals are still being worked out on the series.

Billy Butcher and Homelander look to be back to their diabolical selves, judging by the teaser art for the upcoming fourth season of The Boys that dropped on Wednesday.
Butcher, played by Karl Urban, is as ever contemplative, and Homelander, portrayed by Antony Starr, is back to appearing triumphant, arms confidently thrust in the air in search of adoration and respect, in images for the upcoming set of episodes after the series’ third season finale left off with surprise cameos, character deaths and shifting alliances.
The Boys follows a group of celebrity superheroes who abuse their powers for their own selfish gains and a renegade group of outlaws who are trying to bring them down. The series will return in 2024 and stream exclusively on Amazon’s Prime Video in over 240 countries and territories worldwide.

This post contains spoilers for "Gen V."
Part of what separates "Gen V" from its parent show "The Boys" is the perspective that the story is told from. In "The Boys," the superheroes (aka "supes") are the villains. Key to the show's satire of the superhero genre is showing the collateral damage of normal people being casually crushed by the supes' carelessness with their powers. The main characters are all people who've got a bitter taste of that and want some payback.
In "Gen V," though, the leads are all supes — not that the show makes these "heroes" look much better than "The Boys" does. One trope the show has been showing as especially unenviable is the origin story: how a superhero gets their powers, secret identity, etc.
The series opened with the bloodbath of Marie's (Jaz Sinclair) origin story; she couldn't control her blood-bending powers at their onset and accidentally killed her parents.

The influx of superhero-oriented content in pop culture media, especially some of the mediocre ones, has definitely contributed to the ever-increasing popularity of Amazon Prime’s edgy, satirical take on superhero media, The Boys. While poking fun at other franchises by making tongue-in-cheek references, individual performances from the likes of Antony Starr, Karl Urban, and Jack Quaid, hilarious self-awareness, and abundant use of sensationalism with sex and gore might have worked wonders for the series’ reception, to make the franchise overstay its welcome, franchise biz was always needed. Perhaps it was the reason why the makers decided to release a gorier animated series called The Boys Presents: Diabolical last year. And for 2023, they have expanded the canvas further and come up with a live-action spin-off called Gen V. It’s kind of ironic how gradually the franchise is becoming the very thing it used to satirize.

From the moment it premiered, "The Boys" was a fantastic satire of superhero stories, a show that pulled back the curtain and interrogated the genre and all its shortcomings while still delivering a fantastic and thrilling superhero story in its own right. Indeed, what makes the show work, like any great satire, is that it still functions as the very thing it is satirizing, which is why it was always inevitable that — like the Marvel and DC universes it mocked with impunity — "The Boys" would eventually grow into a cinematic universe with spin-offs and the like. First, there was "The Boys Presents: Diabolical," an animated anthology that connects to the live-action show, and now we have the upcoming college-set spin-of "Gen V."
So far, the footage of "Gen V" promises a blood-soaked story that fits right in with the world of "The Boys," and a story full of mystery and intrigue.

Veteran current executive Jeffrey Glaser will be leaving Sony Pictures Television Studios where he has served as EVP of Current Programming. Marie Jacobson, who has been co-leading the current programming department with Glaser since November, will become sole head following his June departure. The announcement was made by Spts President Katherine Pope in an internal memo.
“After a 30+ year career in entertainment, Jeffrey had been considering a change and determined that now felt like the right time to begin a new chapter,” Pope said in her note (You can read it in full below) “Jeffrey has been an incredibly valuable member of our team and will be greatly missed, but I know we all will fully support his decision.”
This marks the latest senior executive change since Pope took over last summer. She has been establishing her executive team, which has resulted in a number of exits as well as new hires and promotions.

Batman: Caped Crusader has found a new home at Amazon.
The streamer and retail giant has handed out a two-season order for the animated series that was scrapped at HBO Max last August. Caped Crusader landed at the Jennifer Salke-led streamer after producer Warner Bros. Animation shopped the project following the cost-cutting move that saw parent company Warner Bros. Discovery scrap the show more than a year and a half after ordering it straight to series. Other streamers, including Netflix, Apple and Hulu, also kicked the tires on the project that marks a reunion for executive producers J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves, who previously collaborated on The WB Network’s beloved Felicity.
The animated series hails from Bruce Timm, Abrams and Reeves and was sold to a streaming rival as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s efforts to monetize content by selling projects to third-party buyers.

Jennifer Garner (Alias) is returning to television in a gripping new mystery series, The Last Thing He Told Me, based on the #1 New York Times bestselling novel by Laura Dave. The seven-part drama is set to premiere with the first two episodes on Friday, April 14, on Apple TV+, followed by new episodes every Friday through May 19. How do you be an artist in these trying times? Some of the year's best animated TV shows and movies asked this question, and it's not hard to figure out why. In 2022, animators continued fighting for respect from an industry that doesn't often love them back. Animation helped keep the entertainment industry afloat during the worst of the pandemic, and the people who bring these creations to life deserve more than seeing their projects canceled prematurely, having their work scrubbed from streaming services, and inadequate wages.
After all, while it can be crass, bloody, or just too intense for younger viewers, animation can also provide a break from a stressful world — sometimes simply by reflecting back exaggerated versions of our adult concerns. Some of the best animated productions of 2022 explored identity crises, the difficulty of letting go, the struggle to make art, and the absurdities of everyday living. Here are our favorites.

“The Boys” has not only become one of the smartest superhero satires to ever grace a screen, but the series is, without a doubt, one of the most popular shows on a streaming service right now. And in this world of IP dominance, you better believe Amazon knows that the best way to handle a runaway hit like “The Boys” is to start with the spinoffs. That’s where we get “Gen V.”

This isn’t the first time Amazon has released a spinoff of “The Boys.” Previously, fans were introduced to “The Boys: Diabolical.” However, that series is just an animated anthology telling random tales from the superhero universe.

Across movies, TV shows, books, and comics, I'd bet you could easily name five or more properties off the top of your head that depict schools for students with special abilities. The creators behind Prime Video's "The Boys" are hoping to add one more to your list with the upcoming spin-off "Gen V," which has just dropped its first trailer and is set to release sometime in 2023. Announced in September 2020, the new project follows the animated "The Boys Presents: Diabolical" shorts as the second offshoot of the core show but is the first in live action. As such, it will largely set the tone for whether "The Boys" source material can sustain an extended universe.

Apple and Amazon’s quarterly financial results are becoming something of a guessing game for Wall Street analysts trying to size up who’s winning the streaming subscription war. Neither tech giant will budge on telling the public exactly how many paying streaming customers they have.
It’s become almost a parody of the old Mad Magazine comic strip “Spy vs. Spy,” pitting two adversaries against the other with enough equal firepower to blow each into smithereens. Amazon dangles that it has 153 million Prime subscribers, but won’t break down how many tap into video (even on average). Apple doesn’t even break out its streaming platform’s financial results, though its music streaming service clocks in at about 100 million subscribers annually.
On Thursday, Amazon reported a profit of 2.9 billion during the third quarter, down from 3.2 billion in the year-ago period. Revenue rose 15 to 127.1 billion during the quarter.

Surprisingly, Prime Video has become a hub for mature genre work, especially when it comes to animation. Just recently, you have projects such as “The Boys: Diabolical” and “Invincible” both becoming major hits for the streamer and pulling no punches in terms of content. Well, two of the producers of those previous series, Seth Rogen and Adam Goldberg, are going to try their hand again at creating adult animation on the streaming service with a new series, “Sausage Party: Foodtopia.”

The Boys Season 4 is still a long way off, but Prime Video gave fans their first look at new supes on Monday.
Sister Sage is played by Orange is the New Black's Susan Heyward, while The Following's Valorie Curry is set to play Firecracker.
As has been the case with this show since its launch, details about the characters are being kept under wraps.
After the conclusion of The Boys Season 3, it was inevitable there would be some new characters to shake things up on the series.
Creator Eric Kripke teased the fourth season when he announced the casting of both stars back in August.
“These new Supes are some of the best and craziest ever written for The Boys," Kripke said at the time.
“You are going to love them. And by love, I mean be absolutely horrified and a tiny bit nauseous.”

Exclusive: A Disney film is in the works featuring the character Figment, a small purple dragon who serves as the mascot of Epcot’s Imagination Pavilion in Orlando. The feature hails from Seth Rogen’s Point Grey with Pokémon Detective Pikachu‘s Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit set to write, Deadline has learned.
Figment was created by Walt Disney Imagineers Tony Baxter and Steve Kirk, among other collaborators, in 1983, the same year it made its debut in the Epcot ride Journey Into Imagination. Figment is the embodiment of the imagining process— a figment of your imagination.
Although one of Disney’s more obscure characters, Figment has a devoted fanbase that has ensured his role at the park is never diminished. Various attempts to remove the ride or decrease his presence have been met with loud protests.
Today, he is the star of the latest version of the ride Journey Into Imagination with Figment.

Actress Erin Moriarty, who plays Seven member Annie January / Starlight on Amazon Prime’s The Boys has spoken out against trolls–with far more poise and maturity than they could ever harass her with.
Erin Moriarty took to Instagram following the publication of a Medium article titled “#IStandWithStarlight?: The Betrayal of Erin Moriarty by The Boys Fans.” The article begins: “As it turns out, you can dedicate an entire season of a television show to exploring how the toxicity of masculinity crushes and controls women, and seemingly a majority of the audience will still fail to employ the lessons learned — or worse, not have recognised there was a message at all.”
Erin Moriarty agreed, beginning her personal statement with:
“I do feel silenced. I do feel dehumanized. I do feel paralyzed. I’ve put blood, sweat, and tears into this role (over & over & over again). I’ve grown Up...

Netflix’s horror blockbuster ”Stranger Things” and HBO’s black comedy/whodunit “The White Lotus” led the Creative Arts Emmys this weekend with five awards apiece. “Euphoria,” the gritty teen phenom, followed right behind with four prizes, while Netflix’s global sensation, “Squid Game,” the Korean survival drama, captured three wins, as did HBO’s popular “Barry” comedy. However, the critically-acclaimed, mind-bending “Severance” (Apple TV+) managed only two wins.
On the historical drama front, “The Great” (Hulu) finally broke through in Season 2 with an impressive win for period costumes, while “Bridgerton” (Netflix) took period hairstyling, and “The Gilded Age” (HBO Max) earned period/fantasy production design.
On the downside, Marvel’s mind-bending “Moon Knight” only managed one win (sound editing), while the time-bending “Loki” was shut out.

The imposing and charismatic actor’s character in the show is being kept secret for now. But the casting represents a reunion for Morgan and The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke – Morgan played patriarch John Winchester on Kripke’s Supernatural. Exclusive: Christian Slater has been tapped as a major lead in The Spiderwick Chronicles, Disney+’s live-action series adaptation of the popular fantasy books.
Slater will play Mulgarath (alter ego Dr. Dorian Brauer), a capital-v Villain who does what all ogres do — he eats people, an insatiable desire to consume. Mulgarath wants the secrets contained in Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Natural World for a nefarious scheme that will satisfy his hunger.
The Spiderwick Chronicles book series follows the Grace Family — twin brothers Jared and Simon, their sister Mallory and mother Helen — as they move into their dilapidated ancestral home and begin to unravel a dark mystery about their great-great Uncle who once discovered the secret and maybe foreboding faerie world existing parallel to their own.
Kat Coiro will direct the first two episodes of the series, a modern coming-of-age story combined with fantasy adventure, produced by Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television.

Severance was named best streaming drama series and Ted Lasso was named best streaming comedy series at the Hollywood Critics Association’s Hca TV Awards on Sunday. Dopesick was named best streaming limited or anthology series.
Tig Notaro was supposed to host the ceremony, but Cameron Esposito stepped in after Notaro tested positive for Covid-19, Esposito told the audience. Esposito noted that she got the last-minute call over the weekend and flew to Los Angeles earlier Sunday to host the show, where awards were handed out in the streaming categories.
“I can’t believe you were able to squeeze these awards into two days,” Esposito joked, noting that the streaming shows are the only TV programs she actually watches, before noting she had written her monologue in one hour. (Esposito goes by both she/her and they/them pronouns.)

Even though nominations for the 74th annual Emmy Awards were announced a month ago, an exclusive list of individuals have reason to celebrate all over again. The TV academy recently added the nominations credits for producers on series. A whopping 27 performers, writers, and directors now have two or more bids in 2022 for their work in front of and behind the camera.
Extending his advantage at the top of this impressive list, Bill Hader has received six nominations this year. He returns to the Comedy Actor category for “Barry,” earned bids for Comedy Writing and Comedy Directing for the HBO series for episodes “starting now” and “710N,” respectively, and now adds a nomination in the Comedy Series category as an executive producer. The performer also netted a Comedy Guest Actor bid for his hilarious turn as relatives Igor, Gregor, and Timor on an 11th season episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

The Boys supervillain Homelander is just as maniacally insecure in short-form animation as he is in live-action.
In 2021, after two seasons of critical acclaim and a season two Emmy nomination for outstanding drama series, Amazon Prime Video expanded the world of The Boys, its no-holds-barred satire of superhero storytelling and modern-day America. And in March 2022, the second addition to the Boys shared universe, The Boys Presents: Diabolical, premiered with eight animated shorts, each utilizing anthology storytelling and a unique animation style.
The Boys and Diabolical executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg originally approached comedy triumvirate The Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, Akiva Schaffer) to write an episode, but Samberg himself had a rather unexpected idea. “I have a long-running rule of when Seth and Evan call me, I just say, ‘What is it?’ And the answer is almost always yes,” Samberg...
