After a hot streak of films from “Inside Out 2” to “Deadpool & Wolverine” jolted the box office out of a two-month slump, August should see a cooling down period for movie theaters. But it’s more likely the industry will see business similar to last year’s post-“Barbenheimer” performance rather than the deep slump seen earlier this year.
In place of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” “Deadpool & Wolverine” is set to be the month’s big moneymaker. It won’t match the combined domestic grosses of those two titans, but it will be a tour de force in its own right. It has already grossed $261 million domestically and is likely to have at least another $350 million in the tank thanks to its strong word-of-mouth and second viewings from hardcore Marvel fans.
What about the rest of the August release slate? Upcoming films are more likely to have the smaller...

Star Trek is one of the most popular sci-fi franchises in the world and has attracted many actors to its shows and films. While many actors such as Patrick Stewart, William Shatner, and Brent Spiner would go on to be global stars, others in far less prominent roles also made it in the industry.
One such actor was Spider-Man star Kirsten Dunst, who appeared as Hedril in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The actress was just twelve when she appeared on the show as the alien who shares a mentee/daughter-like relationship with Majel Barrett’s Lwaxana Troi. Dunst also appeared in her breakout role in Interview with the Vampire in the same year.

Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 will premiere at the 81st Venice Film Festival.
The second installment of the Civil War saga starring Costner alongside Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone and Danny Huston, will screen out-of-competition on Saturday, September 7.
In an unprecedented move, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, which world premiered in rival festival Cannes in May, will be screened earlier in the day.
Venice’s decision to celebrate Chapter 2 comes just weeks after plans to launch the second installment theatrically August 16 in the U.S. were delayed after a sluggish box office performance for Chapter 1 following its July 4 release.

With all the excitement coming out of Comic-Con for Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus panel, fans can tell the filmmaker gets it. He’s sticking with canon and it’s going to be vicious fun.
With an energetic enthusiasm for the franchise, Alvarez decided to go back to the basics when shooting the film. “I knew that I wanted to take this chapter back to the beginning, not only story-wise but in terms of visual style,” explains Alvarez. “I wanted to keep it simple and focus on a few characters you could get to know and love.”

It’s almost August, which means two things: It’s the last month of the summer movie season, and we’re into the traditional “Dog Days of Summer” when studios often dump a lot of crap in hopes that moviegoers, at least those not taking their last-minute vacations, might go see them. Oddly, this month we also have a number of original films with just two franchise reboots, and a couple movies based on popular books and one video game. Read on for Gold Derby’s August 2024 box office preview.

Uruguyan filmmaker Fede Alvarez (“Don’t Breathe”) is the latest director to take over this long-running horror sci-fi franchise that began all the way back in 1979 with Ridley Scott‘s “Alien.” Scott is still involved as a producer after directing “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant” in 2012 and 2017, respectively, the former being the highest-grossing movie in the franchise with $402.4 million worldwide.

Nearly 50 years later, Alien’s Xenomorph remains one of the greatest and most terrifying monster designs of all time. With its gnarled limbs, double snapping jaws, slimy skin, and propensity for sneaking around in dark corners, it’s a creature that still inspires awe and fear. And it’s none more scary than when conjured practically – with real, tangible puppet effects. So, that’s exactly what filmmaker Fede Alvarez chose for Alien: Romulus, his new face-hugging, chest-bursting horror, aiming to bridge the tense terror of Alien with the all-out war thrills of Aliens.
For star Cailee Spaeny, those practical Xenomorph effects were a game-changer. “The puppeteers were absolutely brilliant,” she tells Empire in a major new career interview. “I mean, they were really puppeteering these creatures. I just don’t think we see that anymore; we turned a corner where everything became green screens and acting to tennis balls. So...

Sony is already ahead of the game without having invested hundreds of millions of dollars into its own streaming platform. This week, once again, results show this is no barrier to Sony’s success in reaching home viewers while generating strong revenues.
“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” premiered on VOD for a $19.99 rental last Tuesday, 47 days after its theatrical release. It remains in the box office top 10 at #7, with a $192 million domestic gross so far. Both iTunes (ranking by transaction) and Fandango (which calculates by revenue) rank it #1.
Meantime, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is the latest of Sony’s films to transition to initial streaming on Netflix about four months after release (and a strong VOD run). It took first place there immediately when it debuted last Tuesday, staying atop all week.
Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1” (Warner Bros.) was displaced from the top spot on both charts.

You could argue that, even with three previous films (including one reboot), that we have yet to see a comic book accurate “Hellboy” film. That doesn’t mean the previous ones are terrible–there is serious love for Guillermo del Toro’s first two–but it looks like “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” might be our first attempt at what a comic book-accurate ‘Hellboy’ film would look like.

In 2007, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was conceived in the darkest recesses of Kevin Feige’s imagination. After working tirelessly to bring every X-Men, Hulk, and Fantastic Four adaptation onto the big screen, the producer quickly learned the importance and the benefit of an interconnected universe centered around one unilaterally moving timeline. And the rest was history.

The birth of the MCU with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man was a resounding success story that is still being told around campfires, in masterclasses, and as bedtime stories even 16 years and 34 films later. However, like all legendary Marvel heroes, to reach the peak, Feige had to bear a few of life’s tragedies and harbor some deep dark regrets first.

“Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” has been retitled with a full-tilt pivot. The next Avengers films will be “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” and they will both be directed by the Russo Brothers.
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo are uniting with Marvel Studios once again to helm the next superhero team-up feature. On Saturday evening, they made their return official by taking the stage at San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H to thunderous applause.
“When we directed ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ we really believed it was the end for us in the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” said Joe Russo to the crowd. “That four-movie run was incredible, and it left us creatively spent.” However, in the time since, the duo found a “very special story” that convinced them to come back. In fact, “it’s the biggest story that Marvel comics ever told. It’s the reason that Anthony and I are standing up here.

When you don’t have star power or a massive superhero movie to show off in San Diego Comic-Con’s highly-visible Hall H, you have to get creative.
And Disney and its 20th Century Studios division did just that for its Alien: Romulus panel. A little theatrics — red strobe lights followed by a gurgling man stumbling on stage, then dying from a “chest burster” — and video questions from surprise filmmaker guests such as original Alien director Ridley Scott or filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, among others can go a long way to bolster the already strong clips that were shown.
And if that fails, then you leave them with parting gifts, in this case, rubber alien “face huggers” that were distributed to all 6,500 or so people who packed the cavernous hall of the San Diego Convention Center Friday, many of whom immediately proceeded to take selfies and post the photos to all their friends.

Director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, is set to reach theatres on August 16th – and with the release date just a few weeks away, the film was promoted with a panel at Comic-Con today, with Álvarez in attendance alongside cast members Cailee Spaeny (Civil War), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie’s Murder Is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), and Aileen Wu (Away from Home).
The San Diego Comic-Con panel for Alien: Romulus began with a sizzle reel showing the desperate state of the future world. The young protagonists are confused as they explore their new surroundings. Alan Seeger’s “I Have a Rendevous with Death” begins to play. The reel then cuts to the group battling a swarm of Face Huggers. It’s the same footage guests saw at CinemaCon earlier this year.

While perhaps not as immediately obvious as a drooling xenomorph with acid-for-blood, one of the many secrets to the Alien franchise’s longevity has been its casting. The original 1979 movie directed by Ridley Scott is rightly celebrated for introducing Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley to the world, yet that whole film’s ensemble is pretty extraordinary. For all intents and purposes, it marked American audiences’ introductions to John Hurt and Ian Holm while also featuring an overall grizzled naturalism, courtesy of actors like Tom Skerritt and Yaphet Kotto.
When the folks starring in the series’ latest iteration, Alien: Romulus, think back to the ’79 movie today, they’re still in a bit of awe. Actor David Jonsson, who plays a benevolent android named Andy in the film, enthuses the first Alien is “almost a theater piece” with its reliance on an often quiet, unshowy ensemble. Alien: Romulus star Cailee Spaeny, meanwhile,...

The Oscar for Best Visual Effects is particularly tough to predict because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in three stages. The members of the executive committee of the branch cast preferential ballots to determine 20 films for further consideration. These are then winnowed down to 10 semi-finalists, which will be announced on December 17, 2024. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscars Best Visual Effects predictions.)
All members of the branch are invited to a virtual screening of excerpts from these 10 films in January at which potential nominees may discuss their work. Ballots are counted using a system of re-weighted range voting to determine the five nominees, which will be revealed on January 17. The entire voting membership of the academy will then vote for the winners, which will be revealed during the 97th Academy Awards ceremony on March 2.

The more lavish the sets, the more accurate the period detail, the more extravagant the designs, the more likely your film will win an Academy Award. Formerly known as Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, this prize goes to the production designer and set decorator, leaving the poor art directors on the outside looking in; perhaps that accounts for the title change. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Production Design.)
This prize is often paired with Best Costume Design. Most recently, “Poor Things” pulled off this double play (Zsuzsa Mihalek was the winning production designer). It joined 10 other films this century to claim both prizes. Here’s the breakdown with the production designers names in brackets.

All the Creative Minds that Have Been Attached to Avengers 5 and 6 - Main Image
Slated for a back-to-back 2026-2027 release, the next Avengers movies are set to start production next year, with 60 characters reportedly to be involved. With no director yet for the Avengers doubleheader, many expect Marvel Studios to make major announcements at Sdcc.
Before that, we recap the biggest names that were rumored or confirmed at some point to lead Marvel Studios’ two-part finale for The Multiverse Saga.
Joe and Anthony Russo
Last week, it was reported that Joe and Anthony Russo are in early talks to suit up again for Marvel directorial duties. Fans saw this as a positive development since the duo was the driving force behind (arguably) peak MCU: The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame.

Vindication for critics who thought Kevin Costner’s epic “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1″ (Warner Bros.) felt more like a TV drama: It was an immediate #1 on VOD top 10 lists.
The first of a planned four-film series, with the second already completed (and now delayed after the postponement of its August release), it showed poorly in theaters with $28.5 million in U.S./Canada after its fourth weekend. Its rapid transition to home viewing after 18 days (standard for Universal beyond its biggest hits) looks like a smart move: It suggests there is an audience, although perhaps not one eager to watch the 181-minute epic in a theater.
This could help the troubled project gain traction, get it out of the red, and increase interest for “Chapter 2,” wherever/whenever it plays.

It may be less than two weeks into its theatrical run, but it's fair to say that "Longlegs" is, without a doubt, the horror surprise of the year. The latest from director Oz Perkins was released by Neon in theaters on July 12 and, with two weekends under its belt at the box office, this buzzy genre flick only becomes more impressive by the moment. To that end, despite facing down heavy competition from "Twisters," which opened to $80.5 million, as well as holdovers like "Despicable Me 4" and "Inside Out 2," Perkins' twisted serial killer tale more than held its own on its second weekend.
"Longlegs" pulled in $11.7 million in its second frame, landing at number four on the charts. More importantly, this represents a mere 48% drop compared to the film's downright shocking opening weekend north of $22 million, which was, without exaggeration, one of the most impressive openings in recent memory.

When you walk into David Maisel’s Los Angeles office, the first thing you see is a statue of Iron Man, one of the most recognizable superheroes in the world. Hanging on the wall above him is an illustration of a furry faced character named Grell, a hero far fewer people recognize, but who is getting the spotlight this week at San Diego Comic-Con.
Iron Man represents Maisel’s past as the founding chairman of Marvel Studios, where he had the idea for characters such as Iron Man, Captain America and Thor to live in a shared cinematic universe. Grell represents his future at Mythos Studios, where he is plotting a new cinematic universe called Ekos that will feature not just Grell, but potentially hundreds of other characters.

No way – you’ll never believe who might be coming back to direct the next Avengers movies! Word on the street is that the Russo brothers, the guys behind Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame, are in talks to take the helm for Avengers 5 and Secret Wars.
If this happens, it would be huge. Those movies are pretty much considered the best that the MCU has ever done. But it’s been up in the air what was going to happen with the new Avengers films since stuff has been changing behind the scenes.
The original director and writer left, and some people are saying they might not even use Kang as the main villain anymore, even though Jonathan Majors totally killed it in that role. So Marvel probably wants someone they know will deliver, and who better than the Russos?
Fans seem pretty hyped about the possibility.

“Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.) is the early favorite in continuing Denis Villeneuve’s epic sci-fi trilogy with bigger and more lavish world-building. However, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” (Warner Bros.), though not on the same scale, touts expansive environments as well.
Other standouts include “Civil War” (A24), “Kinds of Kindness” (Searchlight Pictures), “Sing Sing” (A24), and “Fly Me to the Moon” (Sony Pictures). Among the major fall contenders are “Wicked” (Universal), “Gladiator II” (Paramount), “Megalopolis” (Lionsgate), “Nosferatu” (Focus Features), “Blitz” (Apple TV+), “Conclave” (Focus Features...

Some cliche somewhere said that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’ This has proven to be the case for me and especially when it comes to fan art. I have always sought out great fan art and have wanted to share it with as many people as possible. “Awesome Art We’ve Found Around The Net” is the outlet for that passion. In this column, I will showcase the kick-ass artwork of some great artists, with the hopes that these artists get the attention they deserve. That’s the aim. If you have any questions or comments, or even suggestions of art or other great artists, feel free to contact me at any time at [email protected].

Like horror, science fiction lends itself well to serialization. Fans of the genre love the chance to explore fantastical worlds far from our own, and once storytellers have developed a brand-new universe, those fans love having a reason to come back. From "Star Trek" to "Star Wars" (which are quite similar), from "The Terminator" to "The Thing," sci-fi franchises can spawn from anything given a strong enough premise.
Moviemaking takes time, though, and we also live in a world where projects are announced many years in advance. This can all make it frustrating to be a fan of sci-fi, often having to wait years to be able to return to a series that you love, even though new installments are constantly dangled over your head. While we're waiting for the next great sci-fi original to spark a new franchise, we've rounded up some of the sci-fi sequels that we simply...

At the most recent Oscars, Emma Stone became the lucky 13th winner of two Best Actress awards when she picked up the prize for “Poor Things”; she had prevailed seven years earlier for “La La Land.” When she won back then Stone was 28 and joined the ranks of 31 other winners in their 20s. Another 35, including Stone the second time around, have been thirtysomething when they took to the stage to collect their Oscars.
Bracketing Stone’s two wins were women who defied this bias toward youth: 60-year-old Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”); 45-year old Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”); double champ Frances McDormand (who was 60 and 63 when she won for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and “Nomadland” respectively), 45-year-old Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) and 50-year-old Renee Zellweger (“Judy”). While most may prioritize new additions to streaming apps each month — something we here at IndieWire take great pride in — viewers should also not neglect the fact that with each new property added, another must go. Though some apps do concentrate these expiring selections in a row on one of their menu pages, they aren’t always the easiest to find. Thankfully, we’ve done the work for you. Scouring each major platform and discovering what’s about to disappear from our watchlists, IndieWire has gathered a few selections worth your time before they go from major streamers like Netflix and Prime, as well as apps on the rise like Tubi and Kanopy.

After Joss Whedon exited Marvel despite delivering the highest-grossing films the franchise had to offer at the time, Kevin Feige moved to the Russo brothers for the next two Avengers flicks. Having previously transitioned from TV to the big screen with the success of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and later Civil War, it’s easy to see why they were chosen to conclude the Infinity Saga.
This decision would prove to be a huge success for both MCU and the Russos, as the Endgame duology not only made a gigantic sum at the box office, it was also critically acclaimed. But this wasn’t the case when they joined forces with MCU’s Spider-Man for a crime thriller in 2021.
