Bob Odenkirk has an idea of why Steve Carell ultimately landed the role of Michael Scott in The Office over him.
The Emmy-winning actor, who was a frontrunner for the lead role in the beloved sitcom, recently appeared on the Office Ladies podcast, where he chatted about the show as well as his decision to transition to more dramatic roles.
“I am, in a strange way, a very earnest person for a person in comedy,” Odenkirk explained to hosts Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, who played Pam Beesly and Angela Martin, respectively. “I am oddly earnest, and … it’s one of the reasons I think Steve Carell is a better, you know — is the one who got the role [in The Office].”
“There were other parts that I think I was up for that Steve got, and it’s because he’s better at being genuinely fun,” the Better Call Saul actor continued.

The murky world of Silicon Valley is to be the backdrop for AMC’s latest original.
Jonathan Glatzer, who has written on series including Succession and Better Call Saul, is writing the untitled series, which has been handed a series order.
The series is set inside the bubble of Silicon Valley, amid misguided corporate cultures, moony innovation labs and cutthroat private high schools. It is centered around a rift between a self-appointed “inventor of the future” tech CEO and his self-serving “performance psychologist”, who are engulfed in a scandal sparked by the exploitation of personal data.
Glatzer was a producer on AMC’s Better Call Saul, a supervising producer on HBO’s Succession and a co-exec producer on Apple’s Bad Sisters.
It is produced by AMC Studios.

AMC is heading back to Silicon Valley, this time via an untitled drama series from “Succession” and “Bad Sisters” writer Jonathan Glatzer. The project, from AMC Studios, has been given a greenlight by AMC and sister streamer AMC+.
In ordering the series, AMC Networks’ Dan McDermott, the president of entertainment and AMC Studios, called the show a “captivating, enthralling, authentic look behind the curtain of Silicon Valley.”
Glatzer previously worked on AMC’s “Better Call Saul.” This reps the first show he’s created that has been picked up to series.
“Jonathan is a massive talent and AMC is lucky to be the home of this, his first series creation brought to life,” McDermott added. “The show, which chronicles the lives of characters creating the world we will all inhabit, is right here and right now. Truth is stranger than fiction, especially here.”

When asked about reprising his role as the Darksaber-wielding villain, Esposito coyly replied, “Anything is possible.” While he clarified that he currently has no concrete information about a return to the Star Wars universe, the actor expressed his enthusiasm for working with “The Mandalorian” creator Jon Favreau and executive producer Dave Filoni again.

To be fair, Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story is hardly a carbon copy of Kelce and Swift’s romance. “Alana Higman (King) is sure that her family’s lifelong history as Kansas City Chiefs superfans makes them a frontrunner to win the team’s ‘Fan of the Year’ contest,” reads the official logline. “Derrick (Hynes), Director of Fan Engagement, is tasked with evaluating how Alana and her family stack...

It's not every day we can start a story by telling you we have exciting news about nobody — but today we most assuredly do have exciting news about Nobody. As reported by Deadline, Bob Odenkirk has closed a deal to return as government-assassin-turned-family-man-turned-assassin-again Hutch Mansell in Nobody 2, the forthcoming sequel to Ilya Naishuller's rollicking 2021 geriaction thriller. And what's more, Indonesian action-horror filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto has been tapped to direct.
Whilst Tjahjanto's hiring marks Naishuller's departure from the Nobody franchise, John Wick creator and writer Derek Kolstad — who penned the first film — is back for the follow-up, having written the sequel's screenplay alongside Aaron Rabin (Jack Ryan), Odenkirk, and Umair Aleem (Kate). As for what we can expect from Hutch's return, plot details remain tightly under wraps at present. However, as you may recall, the first film's tantalising post-credits sting saw Hutch — having just seen off the Russian mob...

This is a very exciting time for action cinema. Movies like "John Wick" have brought a new appreciation in American cinema for meticulous choreography and cartoon physics that make each set piece larger and wilder than the ones that came before them. Indie filmmakers like Adil & Bilall are similarly playing in the big studio space, while there's now unprecedented access to action movies from around the world, with filmmakers from countries like Indonesia leaving their mark on the genre. Indonesia, in particular, has seen some of the best action movies of the past decade, and it also gave us perhaps the most exciting voice in the genre working today — Timo Tjahjanto.
To quote our own Bj Colangelo, Tjahjanto "has never made a movie that didn't, at minimum, totally rip," whether it's his short films in "V/H/S/2" and "The ABCs of Death," his Sam Raimi-inspired movie "May the Devil Take You,...

Ed Begley Jr. has been Hollywood’s most famous environmentalist for nearly four decades, and now his daughter Hayden is helping him bring his message to Gen Z.
Starting in 2020, Hayden Begley began posting funny videos of her mom (actress Rachelle Carson-Begley) and dad on her TikTok account, which currently has more than 200,000 followers. In 2023, she posted a “seven days of only taking public transportation in Los Angeles” video series, which culminated in the father-daughter duo taking the Metro to the Oscars; that video surpassed 2 million views.
“Once I realized I had built somewhat of a platform, I wanted to use it for good and try to put a good message out there besides just my funny family’s antics,” Hayden, 24, says of the videos. Ed has famously taken the Metro to Hollywood events for years, along the way instilling the importance of public transportation in his daughter from a young age.

Giancarlo Esposito is often the best thing about whichever project he appears in. That was certainly the case, for this writer, at least, in “The Mandalorian,” his TV series “Parish,” and, now, the Guy Ritchie Netflix show “The Gentlemen.”
This one is a spin-off of the successful 2019 movie of the same name, which starred Matthew McConaughey and a terrific Hugh Grant. The show focuses on Theo James‘ aristocrat, who inherits his family estate only to find that it is the home of a weed empire. What follows is a classic Ritchie affair, with gangsters and crime members in pursuit of the empire. Esposito appears as a suave, menacing American billionaire named Stanley Johnston, who wants to buy the estate from James’ aristocrat. Esposito once again wields his mesmerizing voice to full effect, delivering the best monologues in the show, in which he calls British aristocracy “the original gangsters.” Critics agree,...

“I love those stories that whatever you think is happening — it’s not that,” says Betsy Brandt. And this psychological thriller fits the bill: “It’s a fantastic story, and it’s not what it looks like.” If you’re familiar with last year’s true crime blockbuster The Curious Case of Natalia Grace and its 2024 follow-up, Natalia Speaks, you’ll recognize the bones of the jaw-dropping tale that is The Bad Orphan, premiering Saturday, June 22 at 8/7c on Lifetime. In the new film, Karl and Jessica (Brandt) — already parents of a daughter named Rhiannon — spend years trying to expand their family. They ultimately adopt an 8-year-old orphan who might be more troubled than they first thought. “They’re like, this is what we need. We don’t feel like our family’s complete,” says the Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul actress, who’s also an executive producer. “They...

‘If Aardman hired David Cronenberg to reboot ’80s Plasticine scamp Morph, it might look a bit like this creepy collision of body horror and stop-motion craft… a wildly inventive spurt of bug-eyed British gore that pulls the innards out of the creative process. Quite literally’

It was a surprise to many of her admiring fans that the legendary Carol Burnett was not already immortalized with her handprints in the iconic Hollywood cement. That fact finally changed on Thursday as she was surrounded by friends, co-stars and family at a brief ceremony outside of the Tcl Chinese Theater.
Before cementing herself for decades of tourists to visit, she said, “I grew up just a few blocks from here, Yucca and Wilcox. It was a block north of Hollywood Boulevard. And when I was a little girl, I can’t begin to count the times my grandmother and I would walk up her to Grauman’s Chinese Theater. Betty Grable was one of my favorites, and I remember bending down and putting my hands on her handprints, never dreaming that someday I’d be putting my hands here 80 years later.”

The Apple TV+ drama series “Sugar” has provided a showcase for a number of its stars, with the cast led by Colin Farrell but also including terrific turns from the likes of James Cromwell and Amy Ryan.
The neo-noir detective drama follows Farrell as a private investigator who searches for the missing granddaughter of a Hollywood producer. Created by “Thor” and “I Am Legend” screenwriter Mark Protosevich, the series is an homage-filled thriller that updates and pays dividends to the noir detective genre. Ryan shines in her role as Melanie Matthews, who used to be the step-daughter of the missing Olivia and develops something of a relationship with Farrell’s detective. Ryan, who younger viewers will mostly recognize from her days in “The Office,” demonstrates her impressive versatility as a performer here, as noted by critics.

“Elsbeth” brought back Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni after she originated the character in both “The Good Wife” and “The Good Fight.” The CBS spin-off show follows the titular Elsbeth, an unconventional attorney who works with the NYPD to catch criminals.
But “Elsbeth” doesn’t just return Preston to one of her most treasured roles, it could also return Jesse Tyler Ferguson to the Emmys. Ferguson has a healthy Emmys history behind him (more on that later) but he has been absent at the TV awards for some time now. His guest role in “Elsbeth” could change that, however. Ferguson plays Skip Mason, an Andy Cohen-like producer behind a reality TV show titled “Lavish Ladies.” Ferguson clearly has a ball every time he’s on-screen and, as a result, we have a ball watching him, too, as noted by critics.

A galaxy far, far away keeps getting bigger and bigger thanks to Disney+ expanding the “Star Wars” franchise with several TV shows, such as “The Mandalorian” and “Ahsoka,” to go alongside their film output. As such, “Star Wars” fans have gotten used to seeing actors from the franchise popping up at various awards shows — either for “Star Wars” projects or for other works. Giancarlo Esposito was Emmy-nominated for his villainous work in “The Mandalorian,” for example,” while last year’s Best Drama Actor Emmys lineup included Mando himself, Pedro Pascal, who was cited for “The Last of Us.” With this in mind, here are eight “Star Wars” actors who could be nominated at this year’s Emmys.
Rosario Dawson — “Ahsoka”
Dawson will be looking to secure a nomination for her work in “Star Wars” itself. She plays the live-action version of Ahsoka Tano, a fan-favorite character who originated in the...

Keiko Agena is opening up about the mixed feelings she has when thinking back to playing Lane Kim on the popular TV series Gilmore Girls.
The actress, who played Rory Gilmore’s (Alexis Bledel) music-loving best friend for all seven seasons from 2000-07, recalled her experience on the Dear Felicity rewatch podcast, admitting that she has a different perspective of her character compared to what fans may have.
“For me, it’s this separate thing a little bit because I think what [the role] was for people was different than what it was for me,” she explained. “And so, in a weird way, I feel like I want to honor the experience that people had from the show, and what it meant to them, especially young Asian people, because I get that comment a lot, about what it was like for them to see someone like that onscreen.”
