If the race for Best International Feature Film feels rushed this year, it is: the Academy pushed up country submission deadlines by a month. Films still have until November 15 to play in theaters in their respective countries. The Academy has also laid down more rigorous rules for who serves on the Oscar selection committees: 50 percent must be filmmakers (including artists and craftspeople). France, for example, beefed up its committee from seven members to 11.
As a country with a robust film industry, France has often been criticized for picking the “wrong” Oscar submission, from Cannes Palme d’Or winner “Titane” (Neon), which was not nominated, to “The Taste of Things” (IFC Films) over Neon’s eventual Best Picture contender, “Anatomy of a Fall.”
In fact, Audrey Diwan, director of “Happening” — a film many thought should have been submitted instead of “Titane” — is now on the French selection committee, along with veteran...

A24 is one of the more trusted bands in cinema these days. It's that name that can help turn a movie like "Everything Everywhere All at Once" not only into a huge hit, but an unlikely Best Picture winner at the Oscars. The studio has had a lot of luck in the realm of horror in recent years with the likes of the "X" trilogy and "Talk to Me," among others serving as examples. But even the best studios must suffer a misfire from time to time. It's just the nature of the business. A24 recently suffered a brutal misfire in the form of "The Front Room," which has made a little bit of under-the-radar, unfortunate box office history.
Directed by Max Eggers and Sam Eggers, aka The Eggers Brothers, "The Front Room" opened against "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" on September 6. Given that Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice" sequel opened to $111 million domestically...

French philosopher Simone Weil once wrote, “Imaginary evil is romantic and varied; real evil is gloomy, monotonous, barren, boring.” The quote, from her posthumous collection of passages “Gravity and Grace,” reflects the separation between stories and reality; how the former can magnify villainy while sourcing it and lending it coherence (to say nothing of providing entertainment), whereas the cold, constant nature of existence does the opposite: It hides evil in dull routines, or cloaks it in actions that aren’t easily explained. The phrase “the banality of evil” may come to mind, if you’ve seen “The Zone of Interest” (or simply tracked last year’s Oscar race).

“Young Stalin,” Simon Sebag Montefiore’s biography chronicling the life of Joseph Stalin as a bank-robbing gangster in pre-revolutionary Russia, is being adapted for film.
The feature is being produced by Archil Gelovani and Sergey Yahontov’s Georgia-based banner Independent Film Project (IFP), producers of recent Venice special jury prize winner “April,” alongside Sam Taylor at Film and Music Entertainment, with financing from Len Blavatnik’s Access Entertainment, which backed Jonathan Glazer’s acclaimed Oscar-winning film “The Zone of Interest.”
Earmarked for production in 2025/26, “Young Stalin” will tell the story off how a diminutive 20-something “Soso” (a nickname given to him by his mother) led a group of revolutionaries in a massive bank heist to rob the Imperial Bank in 1907 Tbilisi and in the process became the man known as “Stalin.” As the description reads, this was “the Wild Wild East, made up of Cossacks, Bolshevik gunslingers, the Tsar’s...

The race is on to select films from around the world to compete for the Best International Feature Film award at the 2025 Academy Awards. With the October 2 submission deadline approaching, countries have started announcing their official entries for the prestigious Oscar category. The films under consideration reflect a wide array of styles, genres, and perspectives from the global film community.
The selection process for the international feature film award involves stages of review. After countries submit films, an initial group of 15 finalists will be announced on December 17. Judges will then select just five nominees from this shortlist on January 17, 2025. Last year’s contest similarly started with 88 submissions before narrowing to the final five nominees. The winner was “The Zone of Interest” from the United Kingdom.
Some early contenders are already generating buzz among film festivals and audiences. Croatia entered “Beautiful Evening, Beautiful Day,” a period drama set in 1950s Yugoslavia about censorship and artistic freedom.

It shouldn’t be hard for “Hard Truths” to get some Oscar love, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be.
British actress Marianne Jean-Baptiste delivers an emotionally charged performance in Mike Leigh’s powerful drama. She portrays a woman on the verge of mental collapse, navigating her life with a volatile mix of vulnerability and rage. Whether interacting with a furniture store clerk, her sister, or her husband and child, Jean-Baptiste commands the screen for nearly every one of the film’s 97 minutes, taking the audience on a turbulent emotional ride. But that can be a lot for moviegoers to handle. Hopefully, the searing nature of the performance won’t prevent voters from nominating her for best lead actress at this year’s Academy Awards.
In order for that to happen, Bleecker Street, the film’s distributor, will need strong word-of-mouth to keep the drama Jean-Baptiste and “Hard Truths” in the awards conversation.

Saudi Arabian film industry pioneer Faisal Baltyuor is opening the first arthouse cinema in Riyadh in what amounts to a milestone in the kingdom’s moviegoing trajectory ever since Saudi lifted its 35-year ban on cinema in late 2017.
The plush state-of-the-art 80-seat venue, called Cinehouse, is set to open in the Saudi capital later this month. The symbolic opening film will be a 1975 documentary titled “Development of Riyadh City” by Saudi helmer Abdullah Al-Muheisen. Before the religion-related Saudi ban on cinema went into effect, Al-Muheisen had been instrumental in laying the groundwork for the embryonic Saudi film industry. His vast body of work delved into social and humanitarian issues.
A curated program comprising local and international films at Cinehouse will follow after the “Development of Riyadh City” doc.

The challenge is on: the industry sidebar of Poland’s American Film Festival, U.S. in Progress, is ready to top its “exceptionally successful” 2023 edition in November.
“U.S. in Progress alumni are taking festivals by storm,” says Aff’s artistic director Ula Śniegowska.
Presented as works-in-progress, India Donaldson’s “Good One” – awarded at the event last year – went on to premiere at Sundance and Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in May. Tyler Taormina’s “Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point” was also shown at the French fest, described by Variety’s Jessica Kiang as “a sweet, nostalgic love letter to suburban holiday-season rituals.”
“We Strangers” by Anu Vaila and Cutter Hodierne’s “Cold Wallet” screened at SXSW, and “Familiar Touch” was shown in Venice. Monica Sorelle’s “Mountains” and Shane Atkinson’s “Laroy, Texas” were selected for Tribeca, Georden West’s “Playland” for IFFR, while “Falling Stars,” directed by Richard Karpala and Gabriel Bienczycki,...

Plot: Estranged cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) join a holocaust tour in Poland to fulfill the dying request of their late grandmother.
Review: A Real Pain is Jesse Eisenberg’s second film as a director and marks a substantial leap in quality since his pleasant – but minor – first effort, When You Finish Saving the World. With a tight running time, evocative location shooting, and two terrific performances at its heart, it’s no wonder this scored one of Sundance’s biggest deals, with Searchlight shelling out a cool $10 million for it.
At its heart, the film is a character study, allowing Jesse Eisenberg’s David and Kieran Culkin’s Benji to spar over eighty minutes without making their holiday too earth-shattering an event, with characters ending the film just as broken (or not) as the movie began. It’s one of the few films I’ve seen...

One of the most eye-opening, chilling, fascinating, and frightening documentaries this year just premiered at the Venice Film Festival. It's titled Riefenstahl, referencing the iconic & also infamous German female filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl. The film is sort of a biopic taking us through her life as a filmmaker, though it actually ends up being an indictment regarding her past association with the Nazis in the 1930s & 40s. It's the latest film directed by acclaimed German filmmaker Andres Veiel, who previously made the excellent doc Beuys (which I saw at the 2017 Berlin Film Festival and wrote about back then). For much of the film, I was wondering if Veiel is trying to portray Riefenstahl as a misunderstood artist unfairly scrutinized, or if he was going to lean in on hinting she has always been a Nazi. It's the latter. There's no debate anymore. After watching scene after scene of irrefutable evidence (which...

The presentation will take place at Odeon Luxe Leicester Square on the evening of October 14. Winners of the 51st iteration of the competition will be announced in September.
The move is the latest step in Academy CEO Bill Kramer’s international outreach initiative, reflecting growth in the organisation’s membership base outside the United States and the increasing prevalence in awards season of films not in the English-language, like last year’s season’s best picture...

Director Sean Baker‘s “Anora” won the grand prize, the Palme d’Or, at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. It was the first American film to claim top honors at the prestigious international competition since “The Tree of Life” in 2011. Does that mean it’s in good shape going into Oscar season? Despite its world renown, Cannes is hit-and-miss when it comes to anointing later awards contenders, often selecting art films that don’t end up resonating with the industry insiders in the academy. But in recent years the Oscars have been on the same page as the Cannes jury more often.

Exclusive: The Day The Clown Cried is getting another chance at the big screen. Rewritten by Jerry Lewis, who starred in and directed a 1972 feature drama that went unfinished and unreleased, the script for the Holocaust tale is being revived by K. Jam Media founder Kia Jam. Jam has been part of the financing and producing of films ranging from The Killing Game to In the Heart of the Sea, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and numerous others.
Jam said he has executed a purchase agreement on the original script by Joan O’Brien and Charles Denton. Lewis took a hand in reshaping it as a starring and directing vehicle. Jam is going back to the original screenplay. He said he has the production financing, and the next step is to secure a filmmaker with the guts to tell a most harrowing story.

Landmark Theatres turns 50 this year, but this could be its last. Owned by the Cohen Media Group, they’re part of a foreclosure auction against Cohen Bros. Realty by the Fortress Investment Group for payment of a $534 million loan under New York Uniform Commercial Code law. A judge declared the auction should proceed November 8 unless Cohen and Fortress come to an agreement.
IndieWire also learned that on August 5, the U.S. Department of Labor on August 5 ordered Cohen to deliver $82,309 in back pay and penalties to six New York employees not compensated for overtime. “The violations found here were willful and repeated with significant penalties,” said Wage and Hour Division District Director Jorge Alvarez in New York.
Losing the 29-location Landmark chain, best known for its focus on first-run specialized titles, foreign films, and re-releases, sounds like devastating news. It still contains still notable theaters like the Sunset 5 and NuArt in Los Angeles,...

Even a Little Rock can make ripples in the film industry at large. At least, that’s what Arkansas-born director Jeff Nichols and his Arkansas Cinema Society co-founder Kathryn Tucker are determined to prove by bringing Southern storytellers to the state capital each year.
The centerpiece of Acs’ activities is the annual Filmland event — somewhere between a festival and conference, for which Nichols invites friends and former colleagues to show and discuss their work — although the organization operates year-round. Acs supports the local film community, amateur and professional alike, hosting Arkansas screenings of movies that might not otherwise get adequate exposure in the state, such as Oscar best picture nominees “The Zone of Interest” and “Anatomy of a Fall.”
Eight years ago, Nichols felt the need for a centralized team to reach the local film community. “I’d taken ‘Loving’ back to Little Rock because I wanted to show it to friends and family,...

Whether a terrifying Postman Pat, a mortifying sex scene, or a brush with button-phobia, our writers report on the family viewing they will never forget
This summer, a new book of movie recommendations for children called Hey Kids, Watch This! will be published. It’s been produced by distributor A24, an outfit whose own titles – Uncut Gems, Midsommar, The Zone of Interest – are not immediately family friendly.
The book is correspondingly chewier than most. Yes, Free Willy features, but so does Hedgehog in the Fog, Yuri Norstein’s 10-minute short from 1975. It sings the praises of modern mainstream blockbusters such as Chicken Run, along with older, more niche titles such as Lotte Reiniger’s 1926 animation The Adventures of Prince Achmed.

Scarlett Johansson took on the role of an alien who preys on men in Jonathan Glazer’s 2013 film, Under the Skin. After starring in seductive and superhero roles, Johansson wanted to take a break and act in indie films. While she read several scripts during this time, she sought out Glazer’s script for its high-end concept. Johansson barely had any dialogues in the experimental sci-fi film.

Though the Holocaust had no one architect, Rudolf Höss remains singularly responsible for the speed and efficiency of the atrocities committed at Auschwitz, later emulated at the other Nazi death camps, thanks to his approval of the use of the deadly Zyklon B gas.
