[7.6] Shady witty
cjonesas19 August 2021
An intense and entertaining series, which was very well-acted, with a thrilling score, intelligent camera work and more than witty situations both funny and shady.

Every main female character was likable and psycho in her own way. Quite a few series share that quality.

It was gaining a different momentum at the end of season 2 before being cancelled with very bad judgment IMO. It deserved at least another season.

Season 1 was more professional, while season 2 delved more into characters' personal lives, a little weaker, but not terrible as some view it. A third season was needed to restore the balance. Unfortunately, that never happened.

I hope Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin team up again for another shiny show.

Maybe more for girls?

My husband gave up on this by the end of episode two. I hung on in there and actually really started to enjoy it. Yes the plots are far-fetched and silly, the characters are questionable but it's all acted well and kept me entertained. I've loved Anna Paquin since being addicted to Trueblood so it was great to see her in something new. Supporting cast were all great. Would definitely say Flack was more for the ladies though.

Phenomenal acting by Anna Paquin

No clue why I didn't hear about this gem of a show until I was corona-scrolling in desperation at 3am. Did you like season 2 of fleabag? Or that show where Benedict Cumberbatch is a messy addict? Then watch this. You're in the right genre. This show deserves a much higher rating. Cheers to addiction.

My Review - Flack

My rating 7/10

Anna Paquin stars as Robyn, an American publicist working for a cutthroat London PR company headed by a boss that makes Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) look like Polyanna. Her boss Caroline played by the wonderful Sophie Okonedo often steals the show with her vitriol and total disregard for any of her teams sensibilities. Caroline's Agency represents troubled celebrities, and its mission statement is to be adept at keeping her clients' lives appearing in perfect order so that when scandal hits the women of her Agency go into troubleshooting mode. Ever wonder what the real story is behind those celebrity gossip columns? Flack has all the dirt. Four quick-witted and relentless flackers are tasked to make the best of their celebrity clients' terrible decisions. Robyn (Anna Paquin) is the prime trouble shooter who with assistance from a great cast of women including Meghan Treadway as Belle and Rebecca Benson as Melody covers up and protects her clients from scandals. The first six episodes of Series One introduce us to these powerful witty and sarcastic women and a few dopey men that unusually these days keep the balance of the series very much on the emphasis of powerful women. The second series however I found much darker as Robyn's life unravels as she hits the skids due to her personality change as a consequence of her addiction to drugs and alcohol that threatens her career and her family life. This sudden change took me by surprise but kept my interest so I was pleased when the announcement was made that Amazon has taken up the option for a 3rd series of Flack. There now seems to be some doubt about a third series of Flack and I'll be disappointed if it doesn't eventuate . I admire the way British Comedy Drama series tell it like it is no beating around the bush in this series with no sexual innuendos it's all out there to see. Flack is full of purple language so if swearing bothers you it's not for you. It's a colourful well written and well performed series with a different client story in each episode, Its a delight to see so many talented women in this humorous and dramatic expose into the world of Celebrity shenanigans.

Enjoyable, funny, rude and perfectly timed.
newtownnimbus23 February 2019
So I will be the first to admit that this .at not be everyone's cup of tea. That said, I think it is one of the freshest, notable comedies on TV at the moment and worth digging out from your on demand.

The cast are fantastic, headed by the very talented Anna Paquin (who I feel is in a role that has really shown her versatility), which leads to a story so intertwined you will struggle to remember exactly who fits in to what part of which thing. This isn't a negative, moreso a slight intro to the whirlwind lifestyle portrayed on screen by the cast. Sophie Okonedo, playing Caroline the boss, is perfection (needless to say). Her ability to put over on screen such a fierce, intimidating, but actually quite complex character is a must see, only rivalled here by the lesser known but definite future household name Rebecca Benson, who plays Melody, the timid, wonderfully likeable intern with great comedy timing and the rare ability to make something funny without overdoing it.

At only 6 episodes, the first series does feel rather short and by the time you have gotten to grips with the amazing ability of Eve (Lydia Wilson) to insult everyone in less than 3 seconds, you will be wanting more.

The writers daring to include the names of many real celebrities is what really adds to the credibility of the script and daring to touch on issues that are so relevant right now (#metoo) is handled well, finding humour in the parts it's ok to poke fun at, whilst reminding us through the characters that actually, it really isn't regardless of who you are.

It's definitely a series to keep an eye on, I wouldn't be surprised to see it picked up by a bigger channel, both here and in the UK, but only if season 2 is longer though.

I need to see just what happens next to the characters, I'm already invested.

Actually a 7.5 there just seems to be something missing

Warning: Spoilers
I really liked this show. It's sharp, bitchy, snarky. All of the things that a show about a PR Firm should be. Anna Paquin does a great job but I'm not sure she's right for this role. But, I've only watched two episodes. The other thing is the sets just seem cheap. It makes the whole show look like it was thrown together on a budget. It's either that or the lighting is really, really bad,

First few episodes are an excellent start
rubyfruit7629 January 2021
All of the leads are women; this should be applauded. When only one-third of women and girls in movies and TV have speaking parts at all and "speaking part" is a very low bar, women-led series need to be recognized. The protagonist, while no perfect feminist icon, is keenly aware of both misogyny and the ways in which she perpetuates it. She's beautifully self-aware and actively struggles to be better to herself and others: as she says, "I am trying to be better, but what if I actually don't have better in me?" In both TV and the real world, we need more honesty, nuance, and willingness like that. Oh, and did I mention it's well-written, entertaining, and funny?

A Hot Mess
rodsullivan-5139423 January 2021
I'm filled with remorse thinking about the young women who this series targets. They're supposed to identify with these characters as role models and believe that they lead exciting, important, and fulfilling lives. Many may believe they do.

Unlike "Emily in Paris," which is cute and entertaining, Flack lacks any cuteness. Tawdry, sad, trite, and lacking in dramatic spark, it's a hot mess.

These characters are unfun, and going nowhere-and they're taking the story with them.

Left after seeing just half of Episode 1
searchersd22 January 2021
So why the 4 stars? Just because I like Anna Paquin. Flack is flat. It's rushed, shallow, boring, predictable. Maybe it's just not something I want to watch during a COVID pandemic. We know celebrities are messed up. We know why they hire PR people. And it's quite believable that some of these PR people are more messed up than the stars they're managing. Nothing new and exciting here. For me it's a no.

A hidden gem
ukxenafan119 April 2020
Just finished watching season 2 of Flack and while the very very end was a bit of a tired tv trope(and with the show cancelled, an unresolved minor cliffhanger) this second season showed a much more complex and darker edge than the first. Robyn herself is going down the addition route and it's a gift for an actress of Anna Paquin's class. She does a great job of basically screwing over everything in her increasing desperation. However, the show balances this darkness and other topics like bulimia, death, terminal cancer and the deep emptiness of some people's lives with wit and gallows humour, a lot of this from the outstanding Lydia Wilson as Eve, who channels a sort of young Patsy from AbFab! Considering the low profile of this shows the talent attached is surprising. Paquin of course and the sublime Sophie Okenado who is awesome. Then we have Sam Neill, Marc Warren, Amanda Abbingdon, Jane Horrocks, Doon Mackichan, Daniel Dae Kim and Paquin's hubby Stephen Moyer as director. (Moyer and Paquin are also listed as exec producers.) I'm not sure why this show hasn't taken off. No idea why some people here are talking about political correctness or MeToo either. Women playing characters who are complicated and aren't just set decoration is thankfully not that revolutionary. Let's face it, many tv shows have challenging men at their core. Yes, the women of Flack are pretty amoral but for me, it's a well made and entertaining show that hadn't been seen by enough people and some terrific guest cast.

Not Bad at All....
heidibokor19 June 2021
I see this recommendation every time I log onto Prime, so decided to give it a try one day. I would say it's about 97% drama/serious and 3% comedy. There are some good one liners and fun moments, but mostly this series is a serious drama with drug, alcohol, and other problems that many of the characters are facing. I am not usually a huge fan of Anna Paquin, but I have to say she is not bad in this. The best part is the main characters sister, Ruth....she is the most entertaining and funny character, but she also has real problems as well....not to mention top notch acting from that actress. This show is entertaining enough that I watched both seasons in 2 days.....only 6 episodes per season which is perfect. There is nothing spectacular about this show, but it's worth a try if you want a new drama to watch. Final note: best speech came from the character Eve when she was outside the parental planning/abortion clinic. Not gonna give it away, but whoever wrote that part is a rock star!

Actually an 8 but wanted to make up for unfair reviews.
vicky-18525 February 2019
I really enjoyed this, I don't understand why everyone left such bad reviews. It definitely isn't boring, I think maybe you need to watch a could of episodes? I thought that it was entertaining and although there was a lot of things happening to nice the plot along, it was amusing and felt believable, apart from the typical mean blonde girl... she needed more depth. Anna was really good, and so was the person who played her sister. I hope there is a 2nd season.

Elegantly Wasted
Dragonborn6412 June 2021
Anna Paquin is very good as the bipolar drug addicted PR woman and i do like the show - watched 2 seasons in a couple sittings but most of the supporting characters are a mix of anger and more anger - everyone's just seething because they're living life in the edge don't you know? It kind of runs thin. Melody is a good addition but even the naïf in Hell is familiar. Mental illness has become fashionable and if say this show died a pretty good job of portraying it.

A Pop Culture Gem
abih-4044927 January 2021
As much as I despise today's pop culture Flack brings it home sums it up and then some. Somehow this show manages to give the viewer a inside seat to all that is nutty today with pop culture. The performance by Anna Paquin is second to none and the supporting cast is as solid. Flack hits all the right buttons for me and is well worth the watch even for a pop culture hating old man like me.

Weak writing, made to appeal to lowbrow audience

Warning: Spoilers
I'm really surprised how bad this series is. There is plenty of acting talent. But the writing seems aimed at lowest denominator. The humor generally falls flat despite a complete lack of subtilty.

1st season was excellent.

2nd season went off the rails, the writing for main storyline was really poor.

Supporting characters are excellent throughout.

Strange Casting
schmoozequeen-8404023 January 2021
Anna Paquin is lame and not believable in this role! Her character and performance is lifeless. Found it impossible to watch. A ball-bursting man-eater type actress would be more appropriate.

elw02144 February 2021
I found this by accident! I loved it from start to finish. The writing is superior as is the acting. I had to re-watch because of the fast pace (and the Brit accent) - but I didn't mind. Hilarious!
