In its second week on Netflix, Prison Break rocketed to the top of Nielsen’s streaming rankings.
The former Fox series, which also streams on Hulu, was added to Netflix on July 29 and made its streaming chart debut that week. For the week of Aug. 5-11, it more than doubled the previous frame’s viewing time, rising from 758 million to 1.6 billion minutes. (Hulu, incidentally, is developing a new version of Prison Break with Mayans Mc showrunner Elgin James.)
Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy — whose final season premiered Aug. 8 — was the top original series for the week, coming in at 1.46 billion minutes of viewing. That’s a strong showing, but also down a good amount from the 2.45 billion minutes the show recorded the week of its season three premiere in June 2022.

"Evil" just ended a few weeks ago, but there's already a campaign to bring the surreal, incredible Paramount+ show back for another season – and it's being spearheaded by the most famous horror author in the world.
Stephen King made his love of the four-season series known in a recent interview with PBS news (shared via series star Katja Herbers' X account), telling a reporter, "There's a show called 'Evil' on Paramount+ that I like." He continued: "It's great. It's funny and it's witty and it's very, very sharp." Five days after the series ended, Herbers shared the video with the caption, "Okay Can We Do The Pick Up Now? thank you @StephenKing #Evil." The prolific author got the memo: on August 31, 2024, he simply tweeted, "Dear Paramount+: More Evil, please."
So why is King stumping for this show on social media? Well, because it's exactly as great as he says.

After a long, hot summer, fall finally seems to be on the way. That means that network television is coming back from summer breaks, with new and returning series coming in September and October. But it also means that retail stores have started filling shelves with Halloween merchandise, and horror fans are looking for their newest scare.
While horror movies are generally considered the standard, horror television provides an opportunity to stretch out the tension and make audiences really care about the characters before they face new terrors. This doesn't always work, because the gap between episodes can mess with traditional horror pacing, but creators like Mike Flanagan have mastered the balance.
With long-running shows like Evil and What We Do In The Shadows coming to an end, new horror content is needed now more than ever. Thankfully, there is a good mixture coming to our screens, with an option for every horror fan.

Stephen King is continuing to campaign for the Paramount+ series Evil to make its return from the dead.
After recently giving the show his overwhelming seal of approval, the literary icon demanded the streaming platform renew the supernatural procedural that recently ended after four seasons.
“Dear Paramount+: More Evil, please,” King wrote Sunday on X, to which star Katja Herbers responded, “From the bottom of our Evil hearts, thank you!!!”
The online exchange comes after Herbers previously shared a video this week of King praising the show in a PBS News interview. “There’s a show called Evil on Paramount+ that I like,” he said in the clip. “It’s great. It’s funny and it’s witty and it’s very, very sharp.”

A priest, a psychologist, and a scientist... It may sound like the start of a joke, but it’s the unstoppable trio at the heart of Michelle and Robert King's Evil. Originally debuting on CBS in 2019 before transitioning to Paramount+ for subsequent seasons, the show has delivered one of the most gripping horror thrillers of recent years. When the decision was made to cancel the series, the creators crafted an additional four episodes, ensuring that fans received the finale they deserved—and what a finale it was!
Season 4 proved just as absorbing, intense, and twisted as its predecessors. The creators didn’t ease off the gas; instead, they treated viewers to one of the best seasons yet, delivering justice not just to the lead characters but to the supporting ensemble as well. In just four episodes, we watched as the characters prepared to make life-altering decisions,...

The Olympics brought in very strong streaming numbers for Peacock during the first full week of the games. For other streamers? Not so much.
No original series or movie made the overall top 10 titles in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for the week of July 29-Aug. 4. That’s a first in the four-year history of the weekly rankings, according to the ratings service. Streaming levels outside of the Olympics “decreased significantly” during the week, Nielsen says.
House of the Dragon, however, continued its strong showing on Max (since the show also airs on HBO, Nielsen considers it an acquired series rather than an original). The Game of Thrones prequel topped the week leading up to its second season finale with 1.31 billion minutes of viewing, up from 1.04 billion a week earlier and its best mark of the season so far.

Hell hath no fury like fans who lose a brilliant show before its time. Such is the case with Evil, the supernatural series unlike anything else on screens. When word came down from on high that Evil would end with the conclusion of its fourth season, fans rallied online to save the show from cancelation, with the show’s brilliant star, Katja Herbers, leading the charge. Herber’s enthusiasm for the series is inspiring, with the actress championing the show’s continuation at every turn, signaling to networks and streamers that Team Evil is ready and willing to continue the show’s unique spin on the all but extinct and nostalgic monster-of-the-week formula. Helping to add fuel to Herbers’ fire is the Master of Horror himself, Stephen King, who recently sang Evil’s praises during a PBS News interview. With such a ringing endorsement from one of entertainment’s most sought-after creators,...

After a ridiculously successful first season, fans of Elsbeth are ready for the police procedural to return with more murder mayhem and hijinks.
With a Rotten Tomatoes score of ninety-four percent, the review aggregator’s consensus on the show is that “Carrie Preston’s standout character from The Good Wife makes for a great detective in this amiable and clever spinoff.”
The series has proven that The Good Wife universe has plenty of room to expand into more shows and genres. Elsbeth starkly contrasted the heavy intensity of The Good Wife and The Good Fight.
(Michael Parmelee/CBS)
It has a fun and lighter tone than its sister shows, but that doesn’t mean the creators aren’t above dropping an easter egg or two.
In fact, all of the episodic murderers for Season 1 were actors who had previously portrayed different characters in either The Good Wife or The Good Fight.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s names have been bouncing around social media a lot lately — and not just because South Park warned everybody about that whole “Disney being pure evil” business. Multiple X/Twitter accounts have been generating thousands of likes with an old clip of the duo sharing the “greatest lesson in storytelling ever.”
Back in 2011, the duo were guest lecturers in Professor Ken Liotti’s “Story-Telling Strategies” class at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Why? Well, it was all part of the show Stand In, which aired on mtvU, the MTV-owned channel for college students.
Each episode of Stand In found real, totally unsuspecting students being taught lessons by celebrity guests, such as Cameron Diaz, Seth MacFarlane and even Larry David, presumably because UCLA has an “Advanced Misanthropy” course. More regrettably, Ye guested in one episode, back when he was known as Kanye West.

For audiences, the four seasons of Robert and Michelle King’s “Evil” have been the stuff of nightmares. For Oscar-winning prosthetics artist Joel Harlow, it was the stuff of childhood dreams.
“This is the high water mark of my professional career in terms of artist fulfillment,” Harlow told IndieWire over Zoom a few days before the series finale aired August 22 on Paramount+. “This is what I wanted to do as a kid.”
Harlow means that literally. In most instances, the “Evil” script would merely say, “Joel will deliver us something terrifying.” And starting with the sleep paralysis demon George, that’s just what he did.
“Evil” followed three assessors for the Catholic church — a priest (Mike Colter), an agnostic psychiatrist (Katja Herbers), and an atheist scientist (Aasaf Mandvi) as they evaluated a case of the week to determine if an exorcism was needed while battling demons in their personal lives.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Drive-Away Dolls (Ethan Coen)
The kind of movie made to stumble upon surfing cable at 2 am in a half-awake, half-intoxicated stupor, Ethan Coen’s Drive-Away Dolls aims for a lower artistic bar than anything the director (and certainly his brother) has previously approached, which accounts for much of its charm. Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke first completed the script some two decades ago––titled Drive-Away Dykes both then and now, if one goes by the end credits––and the film’s B-movie, pleasure-first appeal lies in the feeling that they simply dusted off a copy and immediately embarked on production. A slapdash narrative populated with eminently likable characters best described as joke-delivering caricatures, this marvelously queer road-trip comedy caper is a fleet-footed...

Most people who watched Peacock in the week of July 22-28 were watching the Olympics — but two other shows on the NBCUniversal streamer also had a pretty good week.
The swords-and-sandals drama Those About to Die moved into the top 10 original series for the week (it premiered on July 18), likely with an assist from heavy promotion during NBCUniversal’s Olympics telecasts. The series recorded 399 million minutes of viewing time for the week.
Love Island also stayed strong in the week after its July 21 season finale. Though it came down from two straight weeks above a billion minutes, the show’s 724 million minutes of viewing (including earlier seasons on Hulu and Netflix) is very strong for an unscripted series not showing any new episodes during the measured week.

There is nothing more frustrating than a TV character who has overstayed their welcome.
Essentially, those characters go from adding value to the series to severely impacting the quality of a show that we otherwise know and love.
We compiled a list of television characters whose shows didn’t have the good sense to get rid of soon enough. Check it out!
The Faks – The Bear (Courtesy of FX )
Seriously, what the fak is up with the Fak obsession on The Bear?
They add some levity to situations when you have a bunch of high-strung and emotional chefs and characters with a wide array of mental health issues or trauma trying to navigate the same space.
A little of the Faks could go a long way toward lightening the series’ tone and sometimes breaking up tension.

This article contains spoilers for Evil season 4 episode 14.
The title of Evil season 4 episode 14, “Fear of the End”* has a double meaning. It seems very likely the clocks will tick out on Father David Acosta (Mike Colter), Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers), and Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi), as well as much of the ecclesiastical order, by the finale’s end. For fans who didn’t skip past the theme song, for old time’s sake, it also means Evil was much too short-lived a series. Creators and showrunners Robert and Michelle King are to be mourned. “Fear of the End” concludes as a finale, but feels like a death. There is more story to tell, and the final episode is littered with possibilities.
Note: The final four episodes of Evil season 4 technically constitute a “mini” fifth and final season for the show per Paramount+. But the cast and crew have...

The cast of “Evil” was kind of expecting this to be their final season, actor Michael Emerson, who plays the diabolically delightful Leland Thompson on the series, told TheWrap ahead of the series finale.
“They were slow to suggest that we would keep going. What with the strike and all and some changes happening at Paramount+, I didn’t think [a renewal] was a given by any means,” he said of the show’s cancellation after four seasons.
However, he’s grateful that the show’s writers and creators Robert and Michelle King were able to “wrap up the series” as best they could in the final four episodes.
“It was a little fast. It’s hard to wrap up a bunch of narratives like our show has in four episodes. But I think the writers did a pretty good job of it,” he said.

As the dust settles on the finale of Evil Season 4, fans are left reeling from the twists, turns, and, of course, those tantalizing loose ends.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details about the Evil series finale “Fear of the End,” which dropped this morning on Paramount+
In the end, Evil truly brought evil to the heart of the Catholic church with a potential Antichrist baby now being wheeled around the sunny Vatican by its mother Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers) and its priestly guardian of sorts David Acosta (Mike Colter).
Talk about going dark.
“The punchline at the end, is this kid possibly, or probably, is the Antichrist, and Lexis (Maddy Crocco), the second youngest, is probably going to be this evil protector to him,” says Evil co-creator and finale director Robert King of the fanged and white-eyed baby staring up at his mother. “Then it comes down to Kristen, who’s always mother first to protect those two, and actually probably to the detriment of humankind, but to the benefit of her family, which is just comic to us.

As fans of Evil, we’ve been on a wild ride through the bizarre and often terrifying world of paranormal investigations, theological debates, and the intricacies of human (and sometimes not-so-human) relationships.
But amidst all the chaos and confusion, one character has consistently provided a mix of humor, skepticism, and heartfelt moments: Ben Shakir, played by the ever-talented Aasif Mandvi.
In a candid conversation following the explosive Evil Season 4 finale, Aasif shared his thoughts on Ben’s journey, his own personal connections to the character, and what it was like wearing that infamous tinfoil hat.
(Elizabeth Fisher/Paramount+) The Tinfoil Hat Saga: A Symbol of Absurdity
If you’ve ever found yourself wondering what happened to Ben’s tinfoil hat between Episodes 13 and 14, you’re not alone.
Aasif has a theory: “Once [Ben] decided to leave the ghostbuster business, he basically didn’t need that tinfoil anymore; the gin kind of stopped bothering him.

Daniel Fienberg: How the blazes have we reached the end of the summer already? Sorry, Matthew McConaughey in True Detective. Time isn’t a flat circle. It’s a vortex, and the summer of 2024 got sucked right in.
Since June, politics has given us The Worst Debate in History, an assassination attempt, a new Republican vice-presidential candidate (and attendant memes), a sitting president dropping out of the race, a new Democratic presidential nominee, and the meteoric rise of her avuncular running mate, whom 95 percent of Americans couldn’t have picked out of a lineup in May.

The age of streaming is full of problems. TV shows are getting extremely expensive, seasons are getting too short while the wait between them becomes too long, and shows are getting canceled before they have a chance to hit their groove. Even when shows are successful according to every metric, they can get canceled just for reasons that have nothing to do with their quality, like corporate cost-cutting.
Such is the case with "Evil," the best horror TV show since "Hannibal" and "The Exorcist." It's a series that mixes network procedurals with all-time great tales of the macabre, giving audiences monster-of-the-week stories that not only feature some of the best creature work on TV, but also tell poignant stories about the hell of modern existence and how the devil can't compare to the evil of the internet and late-stage capitalism. John Wick without its lead is like separating Tom from Jerry, Bonnie from Clyde, or the mac from cheese. At least, it seems that way at first glance.
The Continental was enormously successful for Peacock, a relative newcomer to the streaming platform fold. It quickly became Peacock’s biggest original launch and still sits in the top 5 of Peacock originals.
That may be where the secret lies, however. After all, The Continental is not John Wick. As it stands, disassociating the title from its predecessor seems like the way to go.

Or, maybe there’s more to it than that.
No one ever thought a Star Trek that didn’t involve the original cast could be successful. It doesn’t happen often, but it does happen.
The problem the entertainment industry has to overcome is association while restraining themselves from overdoing it.

The Continental was enormously successful for Peacock, a relative newcomer to the streaming platform fold. It quickly became Peacock’s biggest original launch and still sits in the top 5 of Peacock originals.

If you loved the It movies as much as I did, then you’re probably as pumped as I am about the upcoming Welcome to Derry series, one of the most highly-anticipated new shows on the horizon — at least for horror fans.
Good scripted horror TV is sometimes hard to come by and when we do get a good show, they don’t usually last as long as we’d like them to.
There are horror television series that come to mind that have had long runs: Supernatural, The Walking Dead, and American Horror Story.

But, over the years, they seem to lose the punch they had in their early seasons, becoming almost a mockery of themselves.
Sometimes short is sweet, but sometimes shows abruptly end before their time, such as the phenomenal Evil on Paramount+, disappointing their fans.

For the Evil cast, going back to film the final episodes and the last day on set were emotional. The series is ending on August 22 after four seasons, but fortunately, Robert and Michelle King were given four bonus episodes to wrap up the story. That ending will also “leave an opening to imagine much more story,” Katja Herbers (who plays Kristen) told TV Insider, “which is a very deliberate choice by Robert and Michelle to both give the viewers a gratifying potential end and an opening for more should a streamer want to pick it up.” But for now, it will be the end, and so “it wasn’t easy,” Herbers admitted, to film the bonus episodes, “knowing that it would end. I felt very grateful for the show and very grateful for all the people that I got to work with and all the friends that I’ve made.
