Unforgotten (2015)
Very intelligent and awesome 1st season!
My review is of the 1st season, the only one I have seen so far, although I will see them all, without a doubt.
From the first moment I knew that I was going to like this series, right on my street! And also with an amazing casting, what more can you ask? The British just do a wonderful job of taking a story and bringing it to life, and Unforgotten is no different.
This series takes many different avenues to find the killer. It seems like everyone is a suspect, and each episode focuses on one of the suspects as you try to figure out who the killer really is. This is really interesting and holds your attention, it's one of those dramas that makes you think the killer is the one you least expect. The acting is great, and very realistic.
The only criticism is that some stereotypes are overly done, but I have seen that before in ofher series...so..nothing to bother about.
Just great! Don't miss this one! Tense, exciting and really interesting!
Hypnotic (2023)
You like it if you like it!
I like the fist half of the movie, interesting, but then.. it gets all very ridiculous and kind of boring, especially when the central performance is as hilariously disinterested Ben Affleck.
There's something like nostalgic in this movie, it feels like a script from the early 2000s, the kind that we don't really see anymore, nothing wrong with that, by the way.
The script doesn't seem to have any effect on Affleck, he is lethargic! It's hard not to find yourself laughing a little by Hypnotic's absurdity.
When the film enters into reflective terrain about what is reality and fiction, these are the moments in which the film fails in an absolute and notable way.
To finish, Hypnotic has an unclear development with a lot of mentalist noise, the film lacks of a good solid dramatic feeling, which makes the roles of Affleck, Alice Braga and William Fichtner in puppets without personality and empty of content.
Sanningen (2023)
Exciting crime drama!
I love Scandinavian series, and also the actress Sofia Helin, simply fantastic! And also here it even reminds me of Saga's role in 'Bron'.
If you are looking for a series of action and shooting and chases, this is not yours. Fallen focuses more on the psychological and relational development of the characters. Essential in all good detective series! And it also studies the mental trauma after a brutal loss.
The investigation of Benjamin's disappearance is very interesting and tense, it happens without haste and without pause, and the dialogues are really nice. The actors are believable and the atmosphere mysterious. Like I said it is not a series full of action and screeching tires, but it still leaves you on the edge of your seat.
The low rating of the series surprises me, and those who give it only one or 3 star don't seem fair at all!.
For me everything is very clear in this series, sometimes a look can say a lot.
This short series is very exciting, engaging and mysterious until the end, and with a phenomenal actress in the main role. I recommend it without a doubt!
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)
Unbearable
It is surprising that this movie has such a high rating, incomprehensible. As a fan of 80's movies, and horror movies this one is specifically from 86, the story doesn't start badly, lets say it is watchable, although it soon turns into a very boring chaos, full of screams and totally out of control, it is not even funny, it is tiring and the scenes are continually repeated with the screams, It's all ridiculous and not worth watching at all.
I had to press the forward button to avoid the screams and possible complaints from my neighbors, it is one of the worst I have ever seen, unbearable!. Don't even bother!
Pearl (2022)
MACABRE
All those who expect a classic slasher should be aware that they will be faced with something quite different. The film addresses the life of the disturbing Pearl. As the film progresses, Pearl's environment becomes increasingly suffocating, leading to a psychopathic character, instability and unable to control the different oppressions and disappointments of life.
I must honestly say that the movie starts slowly and goes step by step, slowly but surely, but.. waiting a little will pay off a lot, the story is terrifying and very sad too. There are tough moments, it is a strong plot, as if half hidden behind the curtains of the pantomime. Sometimes Pearl even made me laugh a little because she reminded me of Pipi at some point, but the adult version. That rebellious character, understandable in some way
The star of the movie and who makes you keep your eyes on the screen is the actress Mia Goth, as Pearl, with a performance that left me speechless from start to finish. I already recognized her talent in the movie 'Infinity Pool'.
It is best not to read the reviews before seeing it, you should see this one and judge for yourself.
Don't miss this psychological movie!... and by the way, I loved the crocodile.
Don't Blink (2014)
One way or another, life disappears when you least expect it.
Once again I am surprised by the low rating of this movie, it seems like something standard, giving few points to horror movies. This one is very different, it's a good tense horrish mystery thriller. All in all, the story begins somewhat slowly and is the typical story of a group of young adults looking for tranquility in a house in the countryside. It's still interesting, especially if the acting and the dialogue are good, and here they are.
There is a question that resonates the most in my head during the movie, what responsibility do we have towards our friends? If you will disappear in the next hour or two? Especially when the entire group is so different personality-wise, some want one thing and others another. As the film evolves you will realize that the dialogues are impetuous and are quite realistic. The increasing tension between the characters and a fear of the unknown.
You definitely shouldn't miss it, and I was surprised not to have seen it until now, as a fan of the genre.
The Woman in the Wall (2023)
FORMIDABLE!
Amazed by the low rating! Give this a chance, you won't be dissapointed!
For anyone not aware of the background, the story, although fictional, is rooted in truth! This is how well done this series is, absolutely formidable!
Apart from being a drama, it is also a thriller with tense and macabre moments.
The plot is not for the faint hearted and hits hard. If you are expecting an easy watch or light entertainment, this is maybe not for you. It is a unique look into the long term effects of such abuses, and the series is not afraid to speak the truth. It is sometimes heartbreaking.
Every reaction and feeling you have while watching it will also come out in the series, anger, frustration, injustice... every strong and to the point dialogue too. Just amazing!
The cinematography and the locations are very well done, and the music fits perfectly and is at times haunting.
The series was filmed in Northern Ireland and originally aired on BBC, and offers a different look into the suffering and destruction of lives resulting from the actions of the Catholic church.
I recommended viewing. A truly well done and realistic series. Well done to everyone involved!
Boat Story (2023)
Simply wonderful!
Once again the actor Tchéky Karyo, playing the role of The Tailor, demonstrates how great he is, fantastic job! Realistic to the bone! The lead characters, Daisy Haggard and Paterson Joseph, as Janet and Samuel are also amazing! And of course Joanna Scanlan, as Pat Tooh! Wow! Just a great casting in general!
For me this series is not a drama as it is known, not at all, it is a rough thriller with great black humor, and quite strong at times. There are moments of violence without mercy, and some unexpected ones that will leave you sad and frustrated.
The plot is the most creative I have seen lately, and all the pieces of the story are very well placed. All the variety of characters and that continuous feeling of realism make the series very entertaining and tense at the same time, the 6 episodes go by very quickly
As always, there are many critics who are comparing it to other movies or series, but it seems ridiculous to me to compare, this is something very different in my opinion. It's unique! Give this series the chance it so richly deserves, it won't disappoint you.
The Long Shadow (2023)
Magnificent production that leaves a deep impression!
I love all British series in general, and this one doesn't fall short, high quality from start to finish. From the exciting story based on real events, to the 70s atmosphere, everything divinely done. Even the music is awesome! The only thing that made me a little sad is the lack of presence of the fantastic actor Toby Jones, and I'm not saying that I'm disappointed, because the casting is fantastic!
The plot is about the desperate hunt for a serial killer. It is frustrating at times, so do not forget that it is in the 70's and 80's, although I think that many things remain unchanged, for example.. we always point out and judge without having the slightest evidence, not to mention the very serious mistakes that are made with so much technology today.
In 'The long shadow' in spite of evidence, on the contrary, the label 'prostitute' was constantly used to describe victims. Just police macho imconpetence, arrogance and sexism.
There is also a reflective style that turns the series and transforms a police thriller into a profound study of the consequences of a society limited by prejudice. And it achieves some shocking and tense scenes too! The series also describes the trauma surrounding the few victims who managed to survive, it is very well done.
I definitely recommend it, and even more so if you are a fan of crime and detective movies. So don't miss it!
Apples Never Fall (2024)
Enough mistery to indulge in!
I did like it! It is a real quality and straightforward mystery drama. Engaging and mysterieus enough to be worth the ride. The cast is BRILLIANT!, and after the first episode I had no doubt that I was going to watch the rest.
After Joy, the mama of the family goes missing, the Delaney family works together and unlocks secrets involving their family and the arrival of a stranger in the house.
I thought that the balance between the family drama and the core mystery worked well enough, keeping me engaged until the end. I think we can frame their tension with a family with its feet on the ground, realistic and with good dialogues, and the plot has some great twists.
The beautiful locations and quick pace are also very effective, the trip through Florida is really nice!
I recommend it!
Infinity Pool (2023)
Trippy, mesmerizing and disturbing.
A couple arrived at an exclusive resort on an imaginary and beautiful island to chill out. The problems in their relationship are evident from the start, and their attitude is quite depressing, especially in such a beautiful place. I would have started with more joy, to further convince the viewer to continue watching it. But..the hit en run, seems to me to be an interesting beginning of the film, the tension is present at all times, a good start.
Shortly after, the plot becomes a cesspool of too much darkness. It is very strong, rough and far too violent and graphic! Be aware! And don't get me wrong, I like strong and psychological movies! Even black humor is my thing!
The good ideas and theme are certainly there, and they are great, but also lost in the shuffle, so for me the film never reaches its full potential. The director uses all his tools to put his finger on the wound of a sick and corrupt society. And shows the perverse subculture of hedonistic tourism and reckless violence.
I found the ritual masks, pointing to physical distortion, really awesome! The best scenes of the movie, for me personally. And let's not forget the film's greatest strengths, the amazing performances of the leads. Bravo!!!
I don't want to go into deeper comments or write my ideas about the ending, but one thing is for sure, the great visual style and cinematography and the terrifying story make it hard to look away, even if you want to, and although it is not my kind of movie, you are guaranteed a horrific and hallucinating trip from which a safe return is unlikely?!
Juvenile Justice (2022)
SOLID AND REALISTIC LEGAL COURTROOM SERIES!
Judge Shim, with a cold stare in her eyes and a distant personality and judge Cha, who already works at the court, is Shim's colleague, completely opposite of her. Together, they handle several juvenile cases where these minors are either offenders or victims.
The question is when children commit horrible crimes, who bears responsability? Can a child be a monster? Yes, no doubt. While it can be easy to blame the adults, but it is really a much larger problem! That's why I love that in this series the detail and investigation are so important, this is how minors should be judged, and adults too of course. With evidence and justice! The point of view of the victims is also very well done, it is all very dramatic, and it is logical! They are strong cases. The first episode is terribly sad, while the victims die of pain, the young criminals go partying. This first episode was based on a real case in 2017. Many details really happened!
That is why each case must be investigated thoroughly, down to the last detail, let's not always pigeonhole young people as mentally ill or 'they just didn't know what they were doing', there are many types of factors that can lead to the most criminal extreme, like killing someone.
The juvie laws are not harsh enough! The current sentiment in the Korean society, and the rest of the world, is that the kids are getting smarter and are deliberately abusing the legal system, because they KNOW they will not be tried as an adult so they will not get jail time no matter the crime, even murder. All the events in the TV show are based on actual crimes that happened in Korea.
A very solid law drama! Don't miss it!
Clanes (2024)
Gangs of Galicia is not for me.
The roles of Clara Lago and Tamar Novas are inspired by the true story of Tania Varela, a lawyer, and David Pérez Lago, stepson of Laureano Oubiña. They were both a couple and both are in prison now. This story is initially interesting, that's why I decided to watch it....but the storytelling is predictable and soapy. The relationship drama is often at the forefront and I just can't help but feel it could've been sooo much better. The season has 7 episodes, which is also too much.
This isn't a bad series. BUT it isn't anything I want to spend much time on. A shame because it's important and interesting, but not with that focus, about their sexual chemistry and relationship. Terrible choice!
Signora Volpe (2022)
Too lovely!
I must say that the series is entertaining and the stories are well constructed and edited. But it is also a very polished, formal, perfect, posh, too friendly and clean series... and the truth is that it is tiring to see Fox so much on camera. It gets a little boring.
From the beginning you already know the path the series is going to take, from the charming police officer to the house that she bought to renovate. Too idyllic, like a fairy tale. I expected more tension and rough moments, but there aren't any.
The best thing about the series is undoubtedly the photography and fantastic landscapes of beautiful Italy. Oh and the music is also very nice. I love that they have chosen a small town where everyone knows each other and not a big city, it gives a more authentic touch to so much perfection, everything is so so clean and correct! Not realistic in my opinion.
Emilia Fox is a good lead character and the scenery in Italy is just stunning. The series isn't great, but it's watchable and entertaining enough.
Six Four (2023)
6 4
I love British cop series. This is not one of the best I have seen, although it certainly maintains the tension until the end. The majority of the series is filmed in Scotland. The photography and landscapes are wonderful!
This one is about cold cases, dealing with a case for a missing girl called Julie Mackie, from 16 years ago. I would have used Scottish folk music, the soundtrack is a bit strange and sometimes doesn't fit with the scenes. Although I noticed it, it didn't bother me too much.
The story is exciting from the beginning, although as it progresses it becomes predictable, with several unexpected surprises as well. Well, I have mixed feelings about this series, since it could have been better by changing two important things, more passion in the actors and a story with more strength, I mean roughness and violence, the topic asks for it!
I also think that a second season can be made as some questions have been left unanswered. It felt as if four episodes were quite short and the plot could have been extended further. Although some actors may be quite distant, the series seems quite realistic to me, nothing exaggeratedly acted.
In short, I definitely recommend it, it is entertaining and has very good moments. Without forgetting to mention again the magnificent Scottish landscapes.
Sous la Seine (2024)
If you like shark horror don't miss this one.
It entertained me. The truth is that it is the perfect movie to watch during a long flight. There is no need to search or analyze beyond what is not. It's one about sharks, with a different touch.
There is no doubt that the theme is very similar to Jaws, but in this case version 2.0, but they don't even reach that.
Of course, in a movie about hungry sharks, the authority figure with more attachment to money and public image than to the safety of his fellow citizens cannot be missing. We all remember the mayor of Amity in Jaws.
It is not a film that stands out in the visual section. It is rather mediocre, and it is true that in some immersion scenes there are certain lighting details, but everything is quite standard, like the design of the sharks. They could have tried harder on this. Perhaps that is why the film is not so rough in my opinion.
Supernatural (2005)
Fighting Evil
What a nice surprise, I was hesitating whether to watch or not because of the title. I am not a fan of fantasy, but I do like horror. The themes are quite interesting and horrifying and I like that each episode is a different case. You maybe think this is a macho dudes show, it is not at all in my opinion.
Based in the 90s I love the music and the different locations, although is filmed in Vancouver, Canada. They make us beleive that is filmed in the southern area of North America, which is more mountainous. Well done. I also like the informal country vibe with jeans and cowboys.
This is a great and creepy road trip, with exciting and terrifying fights, with with humor to relieve and screams of fear. Recommend it!
Kolory zla. Czerwien (2024)
A dark mistery crime thriller!
I am surprised by the low rating!!
After a night on the town at the seaside, the body of a young woman, Monika, is found dead on a beach, with among other things, her lips cut off. A perfect start especially for fans of crime and rough stories.
Part of the story is told in flashback and the violence is, at times, pretty gruesome, and not for the faint of heart. But for some that may actually be a bonus.
It's about parents who don't know what they are doing, let alone what their children are up to. It's about a possible serial killer obsessed by women. The twists and turns go darker and darker and also more strange, it still worked for me as a portrait of pure evil.
This is not an arthouse film, but a very good crime thriller. The ending left me speechless, totally unexpected.
Don't miss it!
Watcher (2022)
Paranoia and reality.
This psychological thriller has a very low rating and it surprises me. I liked it a lot, exciting and tense, with terrifying moments.
The real source of fear is the loneliness and isolation of Julie (Maika Monroe), who's observed by a psychopath, or so she says. Is it paranoia or not? Is she the one following him, or is he the one following and observing her? The fact that there's a serial killer on the loose in town, and one who preys on young women, only adds to her anxiety.
Once this couple arrives in Bucharest, the very little chemistry that exists between the two of them is already there. A 'boring as hell' couple, by the way. The apartment doesn't help either, depressing and dark.
The entire plot from start to finish is very well constructed, and the tension grows and grows. I loved the ending, totally unexpected and left me very satisfied.
Don't miss it, it's a great and very exciting psychological thriller!
Eric (2024)
The monster that accompanies us
When I saw that the creator is Abi Morgan, I didn't hesitate for a second, I knew her by chance because of the series RIVER, also created by her and one of my favorites!
The world of puppets that she builds and creates is truly wonderful. Creativity and joy versus the shadow of alcoholism, disappearance.. and finally... society, all this combined with a choice of different and interesting characters and a fantastic puppet show named 'Good, day, sunshine'. An interesting and ironic mix!.
'Eric' is really about the toxicity of parents and how that affects their children. About being true to yourself and fight for justice. When a director brings you into a completely different world with some similarities to our world, it's a winner. She really has captured the roughness of the 1980s in New York. Nice cinematopraphy.
It is also a call to the society in which we live, especially in big cities,... no one pays attention or look at you and they don't even look at pamphlets, not even of a lost child,
a trubled marriage that only argues without worrying enough about their child, and I can go on... , and the movie is in the 80s!. Several things have changed since then, but others are still there - the underground of society - like the tunnels of New York, in a lost and ignored world, pedophilia, homophobia, racism, murder and the invisibility of poverty. Mental health is also another theme in this creative story.
What I did miss at times is a little more balance, there are some pieces out of order, although I honestly didn't mind much. The music is fantastic, although there are also some small flaws in the songs choice combined with the scene, but it is something personal.
Benedict Cumberbatch gives a remarkable performance as Vincent, a very complex character with ups and downs, sometimes you hate him and at the same time feel compassion. And I especially thought he was a much better actor during the first half of the series.
The blue monster Eric, no matter how grumpy he may seem, is the monster that accompanies us, that consciousness that confronts us with ourselves, for our mistakes and actions.
This is a unique story, full of nuances and psychological, that is seen quickly due to the addictive tone, although some scenes could have been more dynamic.
I am very curious now I finnish watching, this series leaves a lot to think about, a plot that leaves its mark. It is one of those that makes you talk after watching it.
A Beautiful Life (2023)
CHEESY CORNY PREDICTABLE .
In this story the protagonist is played by Danish pop singer Christopher. Music is the escape route to leave a difficult situation. Nothing new here, we all know without a doubt that it is true, music is therapy. For me it is.
The biggest problem is that the film offers too little emotional variety to remain interesting. All the characters are constantly miserable, and the only moments of happiness are stuck together in a montage between the two main characters. Real life lessons about fame, power and the downside of fame are not learned. It is therefore difficult to feel empathy for the characters. I didn't like the characters chosen and the chemistry feels very far away. There is not even chemistry in this romance either. Visually the movie is nice with the Danish landscapes and simple styling, it is effective.
The plot is especially in its second part, with the reappearance of the friend with aspirations to be a singer, really badly made, mixing the cliché with the implausible.
The only okay part is the soundtrack composed by Christopher for the film, culminating in the performance of "A Beautiful Life." Although this type of music is part of my favorite repertoire, pure and with guitar, some songs are too romantic and sweet for my taste.
In the end if you like very cheesy and romance movies, this one is for you... And knowing what you're going to see from the beginning to end.
Thanksgiving (2023)
Turkeys, blood and humor: an ideal combo!
I liked it and it starts very well!, dynamic and tragic. For a Slasher movie it's not bad at all and the end didn't seem predictable to me.
For a Slasher movie it's quite good. And from my point of view it's a LIGHT slasher. A great and brutal satiric, reminding us what the black is as blood splatters and people die painfully for free waffle irons. The John Carver killer is a clever instrument for cold-blooded violence, and that face of colonialism tradition is a little freaky, but didn't scare me enough.
The plot is a parody, a pantomime with some laughter, and also reminding us that excess materialism and selfishness will not take us anywhere. The most terrifying is, that it is true!, and it happens in our current society, on 'Thanksgiving' they inflated the tragedy with blood and death. I did like that.
The last part of the movie is my favorite with the table set and served, finally is everything prepared for the big dinner! Fasten your seat belts everyone!
This movie is a classic slasher combined with the disgusting behavior of consumer society, this makes Thanksgiving a nice mix of some tension and social criticism, complete with overly gory scenes, then you've come to the right place. Really entertaining.
La terra dell'abbastanza (2018)
Suburbs of Rome
What a surprise! I liked the movie a lot. The story of two young friends, Mirko and Manolo, totally different in personality who live on the edge of poverty and the decisions they make after a serious car accident.
Once they made the choice to work for the mafia, the boys essentially signed their death warrant. Not only does the viewer notice this. Once there, there is no turning back. Looking back, Manolo seems unable or unwilling to allow himself to feel anything about his actions.
This plot is distinguished from other similar ones by never allowing the violence to be direct in the face or too bloody, but showing the murder scenes at an appropriate distance. Also the sophisticated choice of actors, like Matteo Olivetti in particular makes quite an impression. I certainly hope to see him more often.
I recommend this movie!
Ennemi public (2016)
Tough, dark and great!
Public Enemy, a very dark and very well constructed Belgian series, In a village in the Ardennes, where almost everyone knows each other and the community atmosphere is very present, with some lovely moments and some humor, perhaps to lighten the topic. I did like it!
The series succeeds in developing and increasing the mystery, the murders of children.
This crime drama series has achieved international recognition. In terms of optics and the intense tone, the series deals with a very strong theme.
It is a quite unknown series that proves to be absolutely a must watch. Varied plots, a great casting of characters and the convincing technical aspects have ensured the popularity of "Public Enemy" for good reason. In addition, the series also dares to make very unpleasant decisions.
I found the role of Beranger, by the actor Angelo Bison, very interesting, a character with great intensity, calm, intense and meticulous, with an antisocial and, above all, psychopathic personality. His character revolves around the question of whether people deserve a second chance. At first it took me a little while to get used to the way he looked at people, with his eyes so open, but I got used to it quickly and it was quite scary.
The ending left me a little disappointed. Just because I believe that a child murderer will never change, I believe in change for sure, but only in some cases, and not at this level. A person like this has no right to life, in any sense, not even in prison.
Apart from some unnecessary cliches, this series has left me with a very positive impression. It has many ups and downs, several surprises and a lot of density and it is very very exciting. Don't miss this one!
God Is a Bullet (2023)
You're Crossing Over!
I think this movie has a slightly low rating. I found it entertaining and I also loved the music in general, especially the country music. Due to the subject matter we already know that this is not going to be an elegant or stylish story.
This movie proves effective in spots, due to the efforts of its committed actors. The violent sequences and its arid desert locations certainly provide a lot of gritty and creepy atmosphere.
The evil cult members, the murderers, are not entirely realistic, although they did scare me at times. They are like outsiders with the sort of abandon you'd expect in a snuff film. A brand of ultra violent that comes across like overkill.
This is one of the reasons why I don't like the title 'God is a bullet', it doesn't seem appropriate to me at all, it's almost ridiculous.
The Danish actor Nikolaj Coster Waldau, Bob in the movie, is a treat to follow, he does a great acting job.
The film is, after all, a country road trip that is easy to follow and entertaining until the end. Yes, it is perhaps a bit long, but the plot and action combined with the music make it bearable. I am not disappointed.
