Remember Me: The Mahalia Jackson Story (2022)
Superior Casting
All too often biopics use salaciousness to maintain the audience's attention. Not the case with this movie. Familiar themes such as love, family, loss, perseverance, resilience, civil rights, and social Justice, and are woven into a glorious tapestry of hope, potential fulfillment, and a life of purpose. Ledsi and Columbus Short are standouts supported by and an outstanding supporting cast. While it started a little slow, the music and script provided seamless transitions as Mahalia's life story unfolded. Ledsi embodied Mahalia. Columbus was uncanny in his portrayal of Martin Luther King. It was also wonderful to see Janet Huber back on the screen.
Vigil (2021)
A Perfect Marriage of Genres!
Vigil deftly takes the audience on a rollercoaster ride of a police procedural drama and espionage thriller. The terrific cast, tight script, and outstanding directing kept me attentive til the end. I actually binge watch the series in a afternoon. I'm now vested in the protagonists-the steadfast crew of the Vigil and the defiant Scottish police. Their story deserves to be continued in a season two.
Fast Color (2018)
Well Scripted; Well Acted
Fast colors is a engaging SciFi film with strong performances from it's three leads. The film is a refreshing storyline whose protagonists are strong women navigating their respective place in the world. The script and pacing kept me intrigued as the plot unfolded. Conspiracy theorists, superhero fans, and family drama aficionados are treated to a moving generational story about a maternal lineage of extraordinary women.
The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel (2020)
Worth the 11 Year Wait
I had been waiting for this movie since the Clark Sisters were featured in Season One of Unsung. I was not disappointed. The casting, acting, and singing was phenomenal. Shout out to Aunjanue Ellis who embodied the very essence of Dr. Mattie Moss Clark. It's a trojan's task to weave a storyline that featured 6 principles - Dr. Clark, Jackie, Twinkie, Denise, Dorinda, and Karen. Mission accomplished as every second of the 2:30 production moved us through the storyline. The production team on screeen and behind the camera created an experience that had me glued to my seat. Job well done!
