Challengers (2024)
One of my favorite films of 2024
I couldn't stop thinking of this film the first time I saw it. It's sexy, intense and oh-so thrilling.
For starters, Zendaya KILLS in this film. She is radiant. Yeah - she doesn't play the most likable character, but she does it SO well. Then you add in Mike Faist and Josh O'Connor to create a seductive threesome. Both Mike and Josh do so well in their roles, and they have fabulous chemistry with Zendaya.
I have loved Luca Guadagnino since I saw "Call Me By Your Name," and I love that he continues to dig into the LGBTQ+ themes. This is my favorite film of his since "Call Me By Your Name," and I cannot wait to see what he does with "Queer."
Finally, let's talk about the incredible score by Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor! Love, love, love! I hope it's nominated for an Oscar.
Summer Camp (2024)
Mindless, Sometimes Entertaining
I didn't have super high hopes for "Summer Camp" after seeing the trailer and poster. Sure, the cast features some promising actors, but the overall delivery is cheesy, poorly developed and at times boring...
Let's start with our three leading females. Alfre Woodard probably is the best of the three, as she tries her best to make use of the material. Kathy Bates (in a questionable wig) is fine, but the creative team could have given her so much more to do. And then there is Diane Keaton playing Diane Keaton. Diane - I love you, but it's time to break out of your shell a bit.
Finally, there are a few charming moments, but they are minimized by the lackluster screenplay and okay direction. This is a film for actors to collect a paycheck and have a little fun, but don't expect much substance.
A Family Affair (2024)
Someone Call Nancy Meyers
"A Family Affair" could have been a much better film if it had a better script and the romance had more spark. This film tried so hard to be a Nancy Meyers-esque film, but Nancy Meyers would have handled it better.
For starters, the chemistry between Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron is mediocre. It doesn't help that they are given some ridiculous dialogue to work with. It could have been much more adult and sexy, like the better Amazon Prime film, "The Idea of You."
Poor Joey King tries to make up for the film with her comedic timing, but I felt like her relationship with mother Nicole Kidman didn't resonate or feel real.
Overall, it has that Hollywood glow and features some memorable moments (especially from the reliable Kathy Bates), but this film could have been so much better with more spark.
I Saw the TV Glow (2024)
Not For Me
I kept waiting for something to happen in this film. I get what the team was trying to go for in their artistic direction about identity for trans people and the struggle, but I felt very little from the direction it took. It felt choppy and random, with mediocre performances.
I couldn't feel much for the characters because I didn't get the emotional connection. I thought their development was lacking. Why should I invest my time in characters that really feel one-dimensional and boring.
I was also disappointed by the ending. I felt like this film could have done so much more to get its point across.
