Based in Spain, LEVEL Airlines is a low-cost, budget airline that is a subsidiary of Iberia. Serving more than 100 destinations in Europe, the United States, and South America, LEVEL offers an enjoyable experience that blends comfort and affordability. Whether you're jetting off on a long-haul adventure to New York or Buenos Aires, LEVEL has tailored services to meet your travel needs.

LEVEL flies a fleet of 7 Airbus A330-200 aircraft. The A330-200 is a wide-body (2-aisle) aircraft that seats 314 between two cabin classes. I find the A330-200 jet a comfortable ride for long distances. Many budget airlines use single-aisle aircraft, such as the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737, which can feel cramped on long-haul flights.

Classes and services

The airline primarily offers two classes: Premium Cabin and Economy cabin. Within these classes are different fare types. In Premium Cabin, they are XL Premium and Premium, and in Economy, they are XL Economy, Top, Front Rows, and Standard. Seats in Premium Cabin are arranged in a 2-3-2 configuration, while Economy is arranged in a 2-4-2 configuration.

Premium Cabin

LEVEL’s premium Cabin is similar to premium economy on major airlines. You’ll board and disembark first in Premium Cabin, which is one of the best perks of being in this cabin, particularly if you have a tight connection. Premium seats recline with more space, and have a wider adjustable headrest and footrest. You’ll also receive a blanket, pillow, and headphones and have your own dedicated restroom.

In my experience, the best seats are the XL Premium seats in the front row, which are bulkhead seats. These seats offer more legroom and will get you off the plane quicker upon landing. However, like with all bulkhead seats, you’ll need to store your TV screen for takeoff and landing and can’t keep any personal belongings underneath your seat.

If you don’t want to sit up front, you can choose a Premium seat on rows two and 3. There is no difference in the experience you receive – XL Premium is just the first row of seats. If you’re traveling with a partner, I’d sit on either side of the fuselage.

Economy Cabin

Within the Economy Cabin, there are 4 separate fare classes: XL Economy, Top, Front Rows, and Standard. No matter which fare class you choose, you’ll enjoy a reclining seat, an adjustable headrest, USB and AC Power, and a 9" TV screen.

XL Economy seats are at the front of the economy cabin. These offer 20% more legroom than other economy seats. Top seats are in a separate part of the economy cabin, which is a good option if you want to avoid the main economy cabin. Front row seats are similar to standard economy seats; however, you’ll deboard shortly after the Premium Class. Finally, standard seats are located towards the back of the economy cabin.

Most of the economy cabin is in a 2-4-2 configuration, except for rows 39 through 42, which are in a 2-3-2 layout.

Long-haul flights

LEVEL only operates long-haul flights. Most of LEVEL’s route map is focused on serving long-haul destinations in the United States and parts of South America. In fact, LEVEL serves many routes that its parent airline, Iberia, flies. LEVEL offers nonstop flights from its hub in Barcelona to the following destinations: Boston, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Buenos Aires, and Santiago.

As a budget airline, LEVEL doesn’t offer many of the same perks that Iberia offers, such as lie-flat business class seats or lounge access. However, in my experience, LEVEL has been a solid carrier, offering cheap premium economy fares often considerably cheaper than other major airlines.

You can book LEVEL flights on Iberia’s website. When a flight is operated by LEVEL (and not Iberia), you will see a notation to the effect of “Plane and crew by Iberia for Level.”

In-flight dining

LEVEL serves a selection of entrees, snacks, and drinks onboard its flights. The available selection depends on the route you fly. Keeping true to its Spanish roots, LEVEL offers tapas dishes like omelets (which come with a side of olives or mixed nuts and beer).

You’ll find entrees such as Thai chicken, ham and cheese croissants, and noodles, and you can order a la carte or purchase a combo. LEVEL is unique among budget carriers in that it offers complimentary water, which is one of my favorite features of the airline.

Comfort, Extra, and Premium bundles include meals and drinks. With these tickets, you’ll be served a meal (starter and dessert) after take-off, beverages (including wine or beer), and tea or coffee to finish. Flights longer than 10 hours (which includes routes such as Buenos Aires and Los Angeles) will also receive a mid-flight snack.

Wi-Fi and entertainment

LEVEL allows Wi-Fi messaging service free of charge during your flight. If you want to purchase Wi-Fi, you can buy a timed pack. LEVEL, like some carriers, charges by usage rather than duration. In this case, the maximum Wi-Fi you can use is 400 MB. In my experience flying LEVEL, the Wi-Fi is reliable throughout the flight. However, you’ll want to make sure you’ve turned on auto downloads and avoid doing any major work to ensure you don’t eat up your Wi-Fi

Fare classes

LEVEL keeps costs low by charging for ancillary purchases like meals and seat selection and unbundles its fares. The airline has five fare classes, which are

Light

Light is LEVEL’s most basic, bare-bones service. A Light ticket will get you a seat on the airplane, one piece of hand luggage, and nothing else. I’ve found that Light fares are tolerable if you keep expectations low, don’t plan to order food, and don’t plan to check a bag.

Comfort

Comfort offers slightly more benefits than Light, namely, an onboard meal.

Extra

Extra is LEVEL’s middle-ground class. It doesn’t offer as many perks as Premium Comfort or Extra, though you’ll have ticket flexibility and seat selection.

Premium Comfort

Premium Comfort is LEVEL’s second-highest fare class. Here, you’ll receive hand luggage, checked bags, food and drink, though you’ll need to pay an extra fee if you need to change your ticket.

Premium Extra

The most flexible of LEVEL’s fare classes, Premium Extra is the way to go if you want a higher-end experience on the airline. In this fare class, you’ll be able to check 2 bags, bring 1 carry-on, have more flexibility in changing your ticket, enjoy priority boarding, seat selection, and more.

Rewards program

LEVEL does not have its own rewards program. However, you can earn Avios on LEVEL flights if you use your Iberia Plus card number when you book your flight or at check in. The number of Avios you’ll earn is commensurate with how much your flight costs and what status level you have with Iberia.

If you’ve never flown LEVEL or Iberia before, you’ll probably have Iberia Plus Clásica. In that case, you’ll earn 5 Avios for every $1 spent on LEVEL flights. So, if you booked a flight on LEVEL that cost $400, you’d earn 2,000 Avios, assuming you were a Clásica member.

In my experience, Avios are some of the most valuable airline miles to have. I enjoy these miles because they can be used to book economy and business class flights on airlines like British Airways, Iberia, and Qatar Airways.

Baggage

No matter which ticket you choose, LEVEL allows you to bring one carry-on item and one personal item (that fits under your seat). If you want to keep costs low, I suggest only bringing the essentials and leaving bulky items at home.

LEVEL allows you to pay for checked bags, however, these can add up in price, especially if you’re checking multiple items. You’ll pay the least amount of money for smaller bags. Bags up to 50 lbs are included in Comfort, Extra, Premium Comfort, and Premium Extra fares.

I’ve found that checking my bag ahead of time has saved me upwards of 50%. That’s because LEVEL has different pricing tiers for checked baggage at booking, post-booking, and at the airport.
