Short biography
Umberto Eco was born in the city of Alessandria in the Italian region of Piedmont, right in the middle of the Genova, Milan, Turin triangle. Before he was drafted to fight in 3 wars, his father, Giulio Eco, was an accountant. Young Umberto and his mother, Giovanna, moved to a small village in the Piedmontese mountainside during the Second World War. Eco received a Salesian education, and he has made references to the order and its founder in his works and interviews. His family name is supposedly an acronym of ex caelis oblatus (Latin: a gift from the heavens), which was given to his grandfather (a foundling) by a city official. His father came from a family of thirteen children, and was very keen of Umberto to read Law, but instead he entered the University of Turin in order to take up medieval philosophy and literature. Umberto's thesis was on the topic of Thomas Aquinas and this earned him a BA in philosophy in 1954. In that period, Eco abandoned the Roman Catholic Church after a crisis of faith. Following this, Eco worked as a cultural editor for RAI, Radiotelevisione Italiana, the state broadcasting station, he also became a lecturer at the University of Turin (1956–64). A group of avant-garde artists—painters, musicians, writers—whom he had befriended at RAI (Gruppo 63) became an important and influential component in Eco's future writing career. This was especially true after the publication of his first book in 1956, Il problema estetico di San Tommaso, which was an extension of his doctoral thesis. This also marked the beginning of his lecturing career at his alma mater. In September 1962, he married Renate Ramge, a German art teacher with whom he has a son and a daughter. He divides his time between an apartment in Milan and a vacation house near Rimini. He has a 30,000 volume library in the former and a 20,000 volume library in the latter.

I haven't participated in Nanowriomo for a few years, but two of my attempts were similar to this offering by Eco: a novel of stories prompted by books I own, and one of stories prompted by books I have read. There ends the comparison, but maybe if I had added a similar frame to what Eco did here those novels may have proved more promising.

All this being said, this is my least favorite of the Eco books I have read. I got the impression that the author had dragged four or five boxes full of junk out of the attic and he was telling us what every little scrap of paper was all about. Yambo, the protagonist, remembers everything he's ever read, but not much else. Because he's read so much and so widely, there is a wide, ugly ditch (to borrow Lessing's phrase) between him and the readers of his story. It is so wide, and so ugly, so as to leave the less-than-ideal reader wondering what the hell he is on about. To be fair, those in the know will really resonate with this, but the majority, I fear, will not.

Near the end of the novel (actually about 110 pages before the end), I was struck by Yambo's apparent uncritical acceptance of Fascist propaganda that they were making Italy great again (this should sound familiar). For I am reading at the same time [[William Shirer]]'s [The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich], which indicates some hesitancy on the part of Mussolini to support Hitler in what he was trying to do. This was an interesting juxtaposition for me.

In general, the book goes into (all?) aspects of writing a thesis: Planning (topic deciding, bibliography assembly), Researching, and Writing. Eco gives principles, guidelines, rules, and techniques for the several stages. In the beginning, it details the concept of a thesis, what it is, and why it is useful even after graduation.

A very useful book. Not worth an analytical reading for me, however, as the language is accessible enough and the ideas not too complex. Even though the work is relatively outdated, I still find use in it precisely because I also employ analog methods, Analog Zettelkasten for instance.
Umberto Eco writes in a very accessible style, relatively formal but still entertaining to read, especially because of his dry humor. It will be a book I will most likely return to in the future when I need specific practical pieces of advice. It complements my edition of Turabian's "A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations" extremely well, being nicer to read additionally. Even the topic of bibliography assembly, while being written with a library in mind and certain technological constraints, is still valuable to this date as it highlights crucial principles, which I won't spoil for you.

The one major drawback of the book is that the index is missing completely. The publisher can likely be blamed for this, nevertheless, the goal of a review is to criticize a work, not an author or publisher, therefore who is responsible for an aspect is irrelevant. Another criticism I have is the lack of references. While the author gives, to my mind, proper advice, there is little reference to works supporting the reasoning, while this would've been possible. For example, Adler & van Doren's work on "How to Read a Book" was published initially before Umberto Eco wrote this book; he could have been familiar with it, and several of his points made reappear in Adler's work. I am confident more works exist that he could have referenced.

The author doesn't go into experimental theses because he is unfamiliar with them, limiting the scope. This does impact the book's value for specific types of readers/researchers but doesn't impact the overall value.

I would recommend this book to any serious researcher and intellectual as it provides a solid framework from which to build. Several practices outlined in this book I will implement in my own Zettelkasten.
