Where are you in Fantasyland? November, 2023

I'm re-reading Sharon Shinn's Elemental Blessings series in preparation for the new book release this month. I'm just starting Jeweled Fire, so I'm off to Malinqua.

Are there any series whose next installment's publication you've marked on your calendar?

Currently in Portland, OR as Cassie Black tries to figure out the problem of The Undead Mr. Tenpenny

Anxiously awaiting Aftermarket Afterlife Book 13 of the Incryptid Series.

I'm currently in Elira with The councillor, who has to choose a new ruler from the leaders of the realm's cities. Lysande is a scholar and not born to this role; there are also threats from within and without the country.

ETA: Oh, and LL McKinney's A crown so cursed, book 3 in the Nightmare-verse, and Travis Baldree's Bookshops & bonedust.

I also have Wolfsong by TJ Klune out, though the second book is already out.

Wandering around Mishig-Tenh and the surrounding lands with The Last Blade Priest.

The only one I was waiting on came out last month (Jacka's new series start An Inheritance of Magic) and is going to be my travel book next week. I'd rather had a new Verus book but oh well :)

I blazed through Assassin's Price and am still in L'Excelsis for the final installment of the Imager Portfolio, Endgames

In New York with The Golem and the Jinni. Really interesting so far, both the characters and the historical setting, but the build-up to something terrible happening and bad people doing bad things to good people is not my favorite kind of plot. Although there is a certain subversiveness present, so I may be surprised.

Over in Green Creek, Oregon (USA) for the first in a series, Wolfsong by TJ Klune. Turns out that Klune just self-published the series, which I'd missed the first time around.

Yesterday I finished Where peace is lost, the new "space fantasy" (from the cover, not me) by Valerie Valdes. One local, one war refugee in hiding, and two offworlders join together on a quest to deactivate a war machine that was left behind on the planet by a warring empire. Potentially the start of a series, but not too obviously so.

Finally finished The Deed of Paksennarion - it was a long read for me, having the full trilogy in one book. I usually prefer spacing out books in a trilogy, but I think this one benefited from seeing how Paks' story evolved with each volume in one go. Greatly enjoyed it.

Currently reading Greenglass House, which is more akin to a The Westing Game-game style mystery rather than actual fantasy. I'm anticipating the resolution of the mystery will be somewhat disappointing (as The Westing Game's was for me) but it's suiting my purpose of needing something quick and light after the longer read.

I just left Ketterdam, having finished Crooked Kingdom. I didn't want to leave! I haven't traveled anywhere new yet. Finishing some non-fiction first. You know when you finish something really good and the next book will feel disappointing simply because it's coming after something really good? I don't want to make a rebound book out of something that I would otherwise enjoy, so non-fiction for now.

I finished The councillor, which was pretty good. Lots of moral greyness but not grim. It's the first half of a duology, with the second part yet to be released.

I just spent a few hours with Delan the mislaid by Laurie Marks. OMG, she's such a good writer. I'm grateful for the library that held onto this copy and then got it to Better W. Books, where I bought it.

>13 rshart3: It is decidedly different (and if he did not have the Verus series under his belt, I don't think it would have been published - not that it is bad - far from it - but it is an extended prologue basically. Still fun but different.

I'm in a historical, alternative England discovering a secret parallel society with magical abilities, in A Marvellous Light. Have to love these multi-genre creations: historical/romance/fantasy/adventure (!). They can be awful if the mix isn't right, but this one is going very well so far (for me; the protagonists have some serious challenges).

I've visited Lodi and Vilnoc observing Penric's labors. I'm glad these novellas from the World of the Five Gods have been published in paperback.

Now I'm exploring the world with the Hopeland family.

In the city of Kingston, on Draoicht, about to read another of Henri Davenforth's Case files.

I'm in Estcarp, reading the first Witch World novel.

On to Oerth and the Abyss, while reading Queen of the Demonweb Pits, the Paul Kidd novel that was the novelization of the classic adventure.

Just finished CSE Cooney's Saint Death's Daughter, which was very good. I can see why it was nominated for the World Fantasy Award.

Just finished exploring the Scholomance in A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik, and ready to go on to the next installment!

Just began reading Warbreaker. My copy says "First time in Paperback!" and I remember buying it like it was yesterday. Turns out yesterday was a looooong time ago.
