✨ Feature: AIGA Board of Directors ✨ Richard Shanks | Managing Partner | UpShift Creative Group Introducing 👤 Richard Shanks, Managing Partner of UpShift, a strategic communications, branding, and design agency with teams in Chicago and Los Angeles, where he is the site lead. Richard founded UpShift in 2000 with the mission to provide the professionalism and scope of a large agency with the innovation and approachability of a small one. As a new member of the AIGA Board of Directors, Richard brings extensive experience working for diverse design and advertising agencies of all sizes across Chicago, Detroit, and Los Angeles. He was also an Adjunct Professor at 🏫 The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Visual Communication Design, where he taught for 24 years. In addition, Richard was President of the Society of Typographic Arts (STA), Chicago’s oldest professional design organization. In 2017, STA made Richard an Honorary Member for his significant contributions in stabilizing the organization and reviving the "STA 100" Award competition. Earlier in his career, ID Magazine named Richard in their “30 Under 30” article, featuring upcoming talent from CalArts’ Design Innovators Program. Richard received a Master's degree from the California Institute of the Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. While his mindset is “Go Blue," his favorite color is orange. On his role as an AIGA Board Member, Richard commented, “I first learned of AIGA while I was a student at the University of Michigan. I’m fortunate that one of my professors was connected to the design community in Chicago—so I tagged along to various AIGA events and competitions in the 'big city.' Without AIGA, this small-town kid from rural America wouldn’t have been exposed to resources that have fueled my career ever since.
