Last Thursday, ARG Portland staff had an amazing tour of the Oregon State Capitol located in the city of Salem. A historic landmark standing at 363,375 square feet, the Capitol was built with assistance of the Federal Emergency Administration of Public Works (WPA). Constructed of reinforced concrete and sheathed in brilliant white Vermont marble, the 1938 building has an angular and unadorned exterior elevation and a massive, ribbed lantern with the “Oregon Pioneer,” sitting atop. Candace C. Naste, ARG’s Project Manager for our work at the Capitol, Aaron Jones and Josh Mohr of Hoffman Construction Company, and Dave Hartsfield with the Oregon Legislature Administration (OLA) led ARG staff through the Capitol grounds. During the tour, the team shared about the current phase of work with SRG + CannonDesign involving an incredible feat of base isolation and seismic upgrades for the Capitol building. Construction for this phase is anticipated to be completed in 2025. Staff also toured recently completed work in the 1975 Capitol Expansion Buildings, encompassing restoration; accessibility upgrades; tenant improvements; and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing upgrades. #OregonStateCapitol #ARGProjectTour #SeismicUpgrade #BaseIsolation #ARG #ArchitecturalResourcesGroup

ARG LA visited Judson Studios this week for a tour of both their historic headquarters in Highland Park and the fusing studio in South Pasadena. Having collaborated on various stained glass restoration projects over the years, it was incredible to see their process and facilities, and get a sneak peek at a few of their current projects. Special thanks to David Judson for showing the team around! #JudsonStudios #Restoration #StainedGlass #ARG #ArchitecturalResourcesGroup

Little Tokyo, home to ARG’s Los Angeles office since 2018, is included in the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 2024 list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. Little Tokyo has been the heart of Los Angeles’ Japanese American community since the 1880s and today, is one of only four recognized Japantowns in the United States. The neighborhood is defined and sustained by more than 400 local businesses featuring Japanese food, drinks, retail goods, and services, about 50 of which are long-term legacy businesses that have served the community for generations. However, in recent years, development pressures and rising rents have forced many of these cherished businesses to relocate or close, despite the best efforts of community groups and local advocates. This alarming trend of displacement poses a threat to the people, places, and institutions that make Little Tokyo such a unique and beloved place. Please sign the petition here to show your support for preserving Little Tokyo’s irreplaceable cultural heritage. https://ow.ly/vYYF50SkoRK #LittleTokyo #HistoricPreservation #Japantown #ARG #ArchitecturalResourcesGroup

Congratulations to Southern Oregon University and the Oregon Chinese Diaspora Project on winning the 2023 National Trust/Advisory Council on Historic Preservation Award and recently securing Federal funding for the project. The mission of the Oregon Chinese Diaspora Project is to promote research and education on Oregon's early Chinese residents. The project uses local history and public archaeology to challenge dated stereotypes and highlight the transnational lives of Chinese immigrants and Chinese Americans who helped establish the early infrastructure and economic industries of Oregon. Read more about their work in the attached article. https://ow.ly/Q43U50SfLSL. #AAPIHistory #HistoricPreservation #OregonChineseDiasporaProject

Attendees at the California Preservation Foundation annual conference were offered a rare look at the iconic Eames House during a tour led by ARG’s Los Angeles Principal, Liz MacLean. The tour illustrated ongoing efforts to conserve and manage the site’s building fabric, landscape, and intangible values through physical conservation projects and site improvements. ARG is providing architecture, planning and conservation services for the Eames House Master Plan in a years-long collaboration with the Eames Foundation. #EamesHouse #Conservation #ARG #ArchitecturalResourcesGroup

As part of the California Preservation Foundation's annual conference, ARG’s Mary Ringhoff helped lead a tour of CBS Television City in Los Angeles. Designed by Pereira & Luckman and constructed in 1952, Television City was the first facility purpose-built for television production. It is significant for its cultural history as well as its architectural design – among many other events and programs. Television City hosted the first appearance of Elvis on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1956, was the home of the Carol Burnett Show, and saw many years of contestants on The Price Is Right! #CBSTelevisionCity #ARG #ArchitecturalResourcesGroup

Last week, ARG received a California Preservation Foundation Design Award for the rehabilitation efforts performed on The Overland in Redlands! The project was an adaptive reuse and rehabilitation of the Redlands Chamber of Commerce (constructed in 1912) into a high-fidelity cocktail bar (The Overland). It included demolition of a non-historic addition, construction of a new restroom addition, plaza, and patio structure, new MEP systems, and interior renovations. The Overland is a focal point in downtown Redlands and the rehabilitation completed by ARG looks to preserve Redlands’ rich cultural and architectural heritage. Learn more about The Overland at the link below. https://ow.ly/231u50S7NYh #AdaptiveReuse #Rehabilitation #HistoricPreservation #Redlands #TheOverland #ARG #ArchitecturalResourcesGroup
