About us
ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, is the world's largest educational and scientific computing society, uniting educators, researchers and professionals to inspire dialogue, share resources and address the field's challenges. As a leading global source for scientific information, ACM promotes computer research and innovation through its journals, magazines, and the proceedings of more than 170 annual conferences and symposia. ACM authors are among the world's leading thinkers in computing and information technologies, providing original research and firsthand perspectives. Founded at the dawn of the computer age, ACM’s reach extends to every part of the globe, with more than half of its more than 100,000 members residing outside the U.S. Its growing membership has led to Councils in Europe, India, and China, fostering networking opportunities that strengthen ties within and across countries and technical communities. Their actions enhance ACM’s ability to raise awareness of computing’s important technical, educational, and social issues around the world.

There’s already evidence that we’re connecting on a deeper level with AI even when it’s just confined to text exchanges. Do we need to prepare for "addictive intelligence?" https://bit.ly/3SMFWT4 #TechNews

Today let's remember Edgar F. Codd, who was born on this day in 1923. He received the 1981 #ACMTuringAward for his fundamental and continuing contributions to the theory and practice of database management systems. Codd's pioneering work in computing revolutionized the field of databases. After serving as a flight lieutenant in the RAF during WWII, he pursued mathematics, ultimately leading him to IBM. There, he developed the relational model of data, a groundbreaking concept that transformed how databases are structured and utilized. Codd's work laid the foundation for modern database systems, impacting countless applications worldwide. His legacy continues to shape the field: https://bit.ly/4f9954k #OTD

On this day in 1939, a pioneer of modern computing, Gordon Bell, was born. His personal computer prototype bridged the world between room-size mainframes and the modern desktop. Called the “Frank Lloyd Wright of computers,” Bell was the master architect in the effort to create smaller, affordable, interactive computers that could be clustered into a network. In 1985 Bell explained his formula for repeated technology successes to ComputerWorld, “The trick in any technology,” he said, “is knowing when to get on the bandwagon, knowing when to push for change, and then knowing when it’s dead and time to get off.” Bell recently passed away at the age of 89. We can remember him for his role in shaping #computinghistory and the world as we know it.

“Earlier this year, Avi Wigderson received the Turing award, the ‘Nobel Prize of computing,’ partly for formally connecting randomness with mathematical functions that are hard to compute. He and his colleagues created a process that takes a suitably complex function and outputs ‘pseudorandom’ bits that can’t be efficiently distinguished from truly random bits. Randomness, it seems, is just computation we cannot predict.” https://bit.ly/3LADVW6 #TechNews #ACM
