2023 saw efforts to build a more equitable banking system and advance economic inclusion — from initiatives to develop lending and credit solutions for borrowers of color to steps taken to unionize bank workers. As we look ahead to 2024, we are reflecting on the most positive banking trends of the year: https://lnkd.in/gxKwaHXP We look forward to our continued work together to nourish our communities, make equitable banking a reality, and to create a more just economy for all.

Our Industry Relations Director, Francis Janes, recently joined industry experts Melanie Cuevas from the California Bankers Association, Amy Betts from Umpqua Bank, and S. Jason Fraley from Huntington National Bank for a compelling discussion on climate risk management at the American Bankers Association Annual Risk and Compliance Conference in Seattle. The panel, moderated by Joe Pigg, SVP of American Bankers Association, explored the evolving regulatory landscape, including updates on climate-related requirements from SEC, federal regulators, and the State of California. The session highlighted that the FSB Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) has transitioned into a global standard under the oversight of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB). Francis underscored the increasing significance of physical climate risks and referenced a thought-provoking article in The Guardian featuring sobering insights from leading climate scientists worldwide. https://lnkd.in/dwiymEZU #ClimateRiskManagement #RegulatoryUpdates #ClimateChange

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for racial justice and economic liberation. Financial institutions play a critical role in this liberation agenda, as equitable access to financial services can significantly empower Black communities and ultimately help to close the racial wealth gap. In honor of #Juneteenth, we are proud to feature an interview with Stephone Coward II of Hip Hop Caucus, a financial advocate dedicated to making banking more racially equitable: https://lnkd.in/gtuJ4zEU #EconomicJustice #RacialJustice

Our Executive Director, Erin Kilmer Neel, was glad to recently speak at a workshop about “Race, Rights, and Responsibilities: Navigating Legal Landscapes in Charitable Giving” at the 2024 Annual Conference on Legal Issues in Social Entrepreneurship and Impact Investing — in the US and Beyond. Thanks to the co-presenters, participants, and the event host, the NYU Law Grunin Center for Law and Social Entrepreneurship. The workshop offered insights into developing new strategies for supporting racial justice within the evolving legal landscape. With race and charitable programming differing across organizations, the session provided an opportunity to help navigate complex legal realities in order to advance equitable practices within the charitable sector. #EconomicJustice #RacialJustice

Our latest Underwriting for Racial Justice (URJ) quarterly meeting offered an opportunity to learn from those working directly with Native American communities. The discussion featured insights from four impressive panelists: Darkfeather Ancheta from 1st Tribal Lending, Agnetha Jaime Gloshay from Common Future, Shannon Ward from Native American Bank, N.A., and Tamra Marlowe from the Chehalis Tribal Loan Fund. Each panelist shared their expertise, offering practical strategies to enhance access to capital and support Indigenous economic development. Our panel referenced the pictured quote from NDN Collective multiple times, recognizing that Indigenous wealth cannot be measured merely in dollars.
