🧟 Zombies are real! For some unfortunate cicadas, at least. Here’s the science, no fiction: Massospora cicadina is a fungal parasite that infects about 10% of periodical cicadas. The fungal spores progressively replace the cicada’s abdomen while they’re still alive. And although infected cicadas are infertile, the fungus turns them into sex-crazed zombies! As the mind-controlled cicadas involuntarily seek out mates, the fungus spreads rapidly through the population. Check out this BioRender figure explaining this fascinating and gruesome process. Finding this content infectious? Come browse our library of fungi! https://lnkd.in/ewsNHa_x

👂 Have you heard all the buzz? The cicadas are here! This is the first year since 1803 where both the Northern Illinois brood (Brood XII) and the Great Southern brood (Brood XIX) emerge from their underground homes at the same time. This rare, dual emergence won't happen again until 2245! Learn more about the fascinating and strange cicada life cycle and brood timelines in the BioRender figure below. Curious about how AI tools are impacting the scientific research industry? (We are too!) Join us this Wednesday, June 5th for a panel discussion on AI's transformative role in research. Ben Haley (13 years at Genentech and now a Professor at the University of Montreal), will lead the discussion with Mayssa Attar from Bausch + Lomb and DeAnna Zacherl from Eli Lilly and Company. They’ll share how AI is enhancing their work and research storytelling. I'll also share design tips and easy-to-learn AI tools to boost your scientific figures and presentations. Can't wait to see the insights and ideas from these discussions! P.S. If you can’t make it, register anyway and we’ll send you the recording. https://lnkd.in/g5hP47RG #AI #ScienceCommunication #DrugDevelopment #BioRender #TrustInScience

Presenting and publishing. Scientists: Is this enough to garner attention for your research? Vadym Chibrikov thinks there’s more to it. The Agriculture and Horticulture PhD candidate is tapping into the power of social media to find new partners and elevate his research group’s work at the Instytut Agrofizyki PAN / Institute of Agrophysics, PAS (Polish Academy of Sciences). (And he often uses BioRender figures to help communicate their science 🙌 , like the one you see here.) Our latest SciComm Champion shared with us: ➡ Why a visual “hook” is something canonic ➡ The results he’s seeing from posting on social media ➡ Tips for simplifying and decluttering scientific figures …and more. Has social media changed the way you promote your research or reach other scientists? Tell us below! Check out Vadym’s full interview on our blog — link in the comments
