We’re providing accessible and exceptional care to make a healthier Boston.

About us

Boston Medical Center models a new kind of excellence in healthcare, where innovative and equitable care empowers all patients to thrive. We combine world-class clinicians and cutting-edge treatments with compassionate, quality care that extends beyond our walls. Together, we're reimagining healthcare for Boston - and the world. As an award-winning health equity leader, our diverse clinicians and staff interrogate racial disparities in care and partner with our community to dismantle systemic inequities. This commitment to equity is the basis of all our work, particularly as 70 percent of our patients are people of color. In addition, nearly 30 percent of our patients speak a primary language other than English, and so we offer all our care and services in over 160 languages, including Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, and more. As an academic medical center, BMC is building the future of health care. Our world-renowned researchers currently oversee over 660 research projects in a wide variety of areas, and as the principal teaching affiliate of Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, BMC is devoted to training future generations of health care professionals. BMC's clinical expertise, commitment to equity, quality, and sustainability efforts have been consistently recognized by organizations across the country, including the federal government, American Nurses Credentialing Center (Magnet designation), U.S. News, Leapfrog, Human Rights Campaign, the Lown Institute, Becker’s Healthcare, and more. During Mental Health Month, we celebrate BMC programs like Boston Emergency Services Team (BEST). BMC’s BEST offers one of the country’s most comprehensive mental health intervention programs. A co-responder program with the Boston Police Department ensures police get the support they need on calls that require mental health expertise. With philanthropic support, BMC continues to strengthen its efforts to meet urgent mental health needs. “We all come together for a person-centric approach with a common goal—to help people,” says Sweila Cardoso, a BMC social worker and member of the BEST team (pictured center with Boston Police Department Officers Jared Taylor, left, and Arthur DePinho, right). • May is Preeclampsia Awareness Month. Maternal hypertension puts patients at greater risk of developing preeclampsia during or after pregnancy, and past research tells us that preeclampsia is the number one driver of racial disparities in pregnancy outcomes. At BMC, our OB/GYN department and Health Equity Accelerator have and continue to implement interventions that empower our pregnant patients, including our remote blood pressure monitoring program. • When our patient, Boohe, met Dr. David Henderson, Chief of Psychiatry at BMC, he felt comforted by Dr. Henderson’s expertise in Liberian trauma because “he understands my culture and talks to me like he’s from my culture”. That cultural sensitivity is pivotal in advancing mental health care. The Africa Global Mental Health Institute, co-founded by Dr. Henderson and supported by BMC, fosters collaborations across more than 25 countries to create accessible training and education programs for providers to improve the mental health of people of African descent no matter where they are in the world.
