We’re providing accessible and exceptional care to make a healthier Boston.

About us

Boston Medical Center models a new kind of excellence in healthcare, where innovative and equitable care empowers all patients to thrive. We combine world-class clinicians and cutting-edge treatments with compassionate, quality care that extends beyond our walls. Together, we're reimagining healthcare for Boston - and the world. As an award-winning health equity leader, our diverse clinicians and staff interrogate racial disparities in care and partner with our community to dismantle systemic inequities. This commitment to equity is the basis of all our work, particularly as 70 percent of our patients are people of color. In addition, nearly 30 percent of our patients speak a primary language other than English, and so we offer all our care and services in over 160 languages, including Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, and more. As an academic medical center, BMC is building the future of health care. Our world-renowned researchers currently oversee over 660 research projects in a wide variety of areas, and as the principal teaching affiliate of Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, BMC is devoted to training future generations of health care professionals. BMC's clinical expertise, commitment to equity, quality, and sustainability efforts have been consistently recognized by organizations across the country, including the federal government, American Nurses Credentialing Center (Magnet designation), U.S. News, Leapfrog, Human Rights Campaign, the Lown Institute, Becker’s Healthcare, and more. He participated in a roundtable discussion in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day, which brought together federal and community partners to discuss how we can work together to address the overdose epidemic. Stephen shared his experience leading the Massachusetts Overdose Prevention Helpline, which provides 24/7 harm reduction services to prevent fatal overdoses, as well as the work done at BMC's Grayken Center for Addiction. BMC and our Breastfeeding Equity Center celebrate the impact of a multi-disciplinary and coordinated approach to caring for breastfeeding families. From our inpatient lactation team to Curbside Care, family medicine to obstetrics, pediatrics to breastfeeding medicine, to teams across the hospital including anesthesia and many other clinical touch points, recognizing and honoring the unique needs of both a breastfeeding baby and a lactating parent requires everyone to work together. In closing out Breastfeeding Awareness Month and in elevating this Black Breastfeeding Week, the Breastfeeding Equity Center maintains its commitment to providing a space for collaboration and unity so that we can continue to provide the best care available to all of our new families while bridging the gaps in equitable access to top evidence-based care and comprehensive support. Did you know that BMC is one of the country’s greenest hospitals? That distinction is good for the environment and our health. Programs like BMC’s Clean Power Prescription will help lower patients' utility bills using renewable energy from our rooftop solar panels. This is one way we are making our community heathier. Much of this work is made possible by our donor community. Every donation to BMC, of any size adds up to make an impact for all of Boston. BMC’s Jennifer Fiore, MD, spoke with the Boston Globe Media about preventing the spread of COVID-19 and seasonal illnesses in classrooms. She emphasizes that students who feel sick should stay home to avoid spreading the virus to others. "It’s better for your child, their teachers, and their peers to stay home if they are feeling sick, and they should feel supported to do so even if experiencing some anxiety over missing lessons or important schoolwork." • Did you know that BMC has programs that are not covered by insurance? They are made possible by our donor community. Just one of the many examples is our two rooftop farms that grow 15,000 pounds of produce annually to stock our on-site Food Pantry and deliver to local community centers. BMC is a leader in the food-is-medicine movement. Generosity from our donors ensures more programs like these can thrive—supporting our patients and making Boston healthier for all of us. • In May 2024, Laura welcomed her first child, Matthew, to the world. As a first-time mother and as someone who is experiencing homelessness, Laura appreciates receiving “amazing” care from BMC during pregnancy, birth, and with one of her biggest concerns during postpartum: breastfeeding. As a new mother, she was very stressed about not producing enough milk to feed Matthew. To add to her worries, Matthew was struggling to latch onto her. Emily Swisher-Rosa , CNM, MSN, WHNP, IBCLC, is co-director of BMC’s breastfeeding equity center and is passionate about helping all members of our community achieve their breastfeeding goals. Laura says that she knows “everything about breastfeeding because of Emily.” While her baby received supplements early on, Laura received guidance from Emily and went from producing 30 ML at a time to at least seven to nine ounces a day in addition to latching Matthew directly four to five times a day. This has been enough for her to meet most of Matthew’s daily nutritional needs. As Laura continues to navigate motherhood, she is relieved to see Matthew getting the nourishment he needs. Laura has advice for new parents: “Don’t compare yourself to other mothers. Sometimes, someone can produce more milk, and she can save more milk for the baby. But we all produce what the baby needs. We give what we can.” BMC’s comprehensive breastfeeding services and resources are empowering all parents and their infants to thrive. Through training, research, and lactation support, our team continues to implement interventions that help families achieve their infant feeding goals and keep them healthy.
