On Juneteenth Day, we recognize the freedom that came on June 19, 1865 of enslaved people of Texas. This day was known as Emancipation Day. More than 250,000 African Americans embraced their freedom. Brooke Glen Behavioral Hospital brings awareness to their staff on this day of freedom, and served an outstanding brunch for them to enjoy as well as breaking bread with one another. This feast is brought to them due to the culinary expertise of their Chef, Ms. Ronda and her crew. From shrimp and grits to bananas foster French toast along with so much more, this was truly delicious. Staff and patients alike had the opportunity to feast. Additionally, thank you to Gary from BVP Coffee Co., Urban Art Gallery and The Black Reserve Bookstore for sharing their businesses products to purchase. What a great way to start this day!

Major Depression in the U.S. is more common than you may think! As the summer months start to get underway, not everyone enjoys the warmer weather and more opportunities for socializing. Did you know? Major depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the United States. This condition can interfere with one’s ability to engage in life’s activities. It is characterized by a depressed mood and includes symptoms such as issues with sleep, eating, energy, concentration and low self-esteem for a period of at least two weeks. Facts and figures  In 2021, an estimated 21 million adults had at least one major depressive episode, representing 8% of all U.S. adults.  More women than men had the condition (10% compared to 6%).  An estimated 61% of adults with the condition received treatment in the past year.  Approximately 5 million teens aged 12 to 17 had at least one major depressive episode, representing 20% of adolescents.  More girls than boys had the condition (29% compared to 11.5%).  An estimated 41% of teens with major depressive episode received treatment in the past year.  The overall rate of major depression was highest among ages 18-25. According to The National Library of Medicine, a combination of medication, psychotherapy and somatic therapies is the most effective way to manage depression. At the 22nd Annual Caron Breakfast, we honored the unsung heroes and other award recipients who make our community a better place. It was a privilege to recognize their dedication and hard work. Brooke Glen Behavioral Hospital we recognize our LGBTQIA+ community all of the time but especially in June when it is National Pride Month. We applaud their efforts to be who they want to be and say stand proud.

Stop by the Elmwood Zoo for today’s 18th Annual Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. 30 vendors are stationed at the pavilion to share a variety of mental health resources. Congratulations to STR Behavioral Health at Cedar Creek, a new mental health residential program. We were able to attend the Wounded Warrior Project hosted by Brooke Glen Behavioral Hospital. Brooke Glen created “coins for a cause” to give back to those who served our country, and to bring awareness to Mental Health Awareness Month. A check was presented to the amazing speaker, Tonya Oxendine, from the Wounded Warrior Project. #MHAM2024

Brooke Glen Behavioral Hospital had the pleasure of hosting Tonya Oxendine, speaker from the Wounded Warrior Project today, as the Memorial Weekend commenced. Tonya shared her experiences from a 30+ year military career and the challenges she faced with her own mental health including debilitating depression along with PTSD. After retiring and receiving support from the WWP, she found her calling as a speaker and advocate for the WWP. In an effort to support veterans, our staff participated in a fundraising competition, Coins for a Cause, for Mental Health Awareness Month, and Military Appreciation Month. The staff rallied together and raised $6,450.88 for this organization. Neil Callahan, CEO, and Ellyn Strauss, DBD, presented the check to Ms. Oxendine to support the WWP. NAMI Bucks County PA held its Annual Golf Fundraiser in honor of Abby Wolf. Abby died by suicide in November, 2014 and her family has started Abby’s Bakery to help raise awareness and give hope so no other family has to experience this unthinkable pain. Brooke Glen Behavioral Hospital was proud to sponsor today’s golf outing. NAMI MAN was on hand to greet guests and share about the great work that NAMI has been doing for the community. NAMI served 50,000 people last year to support their mental health needs. #mentalhealthawarenessmonth #youarenotalone
