Known as the California Coastal Research Vessel (CCRV), the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) approved the preliminary design of a first-of-its-kind hydrogen-hybrid research ship. The ship will feature a #hydrogenfuelcell propulsion system that will allow it to operate with no #greenhousegas or other emissions for 75% of its mission. It will observe and measure biological, chemical, geological and physical processes including research to better understand fisheries, harmful algal blooms, severe El Niño storms, atmospheric rivers, sea-level rise, ocean acidification, and oxygen depletion zones. NOVAdev, a developer of hydrogen transportation and storage technologies, disclosed plans for a large-scale hydrogen test facility to be located in high desert area north of Los Angeles, California. The California Hydrogen Test and Training Center is purpose-designed to advance hydrogen storage, refueling, and power systems for the air, land and marine transport industries. Michael Kramer, NOVAdev founder and CEO, said: "While hydrogen is a key contributor to sustainable transportation, capabilities for testing hydrogen systems at scale are almost non-existent and prohibitively expensive." "Our hydrogen-focused facility will uniquely and cost-effectively support testing needs from a global audience working hydrogen storage and power systems development.” Read more: https://ow.ly/UNUw50SnAv9

Last week, our team had the pleasure of attending and presenting at the inaugural California Hydrogen Convention. The event provided valuable insights into California’s hydrogen initiatives, which emphasize domestic production and usage to drive the decarbonization of transportation across the state. ✨ Conference highlights: 🤝 Collaborative Endeavors We are thrilled to join the ARCHES H2 (Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems) working group. Collaborating with like-minded professionals, we aim to drive the development and implementation of hydrogen as a cornerstone of California’s clean energy transition to 100% clean electricity by 2045. It was great to connect with program sponsors and discuss the California ARCHES H2 initiative, which focuses on accelerating renewable hydrogen projects while ensuring environmental and energy justice, cleaner air for impacted communities, and real community involvement. Learn more about ARCHES H2 here ➡ https://archesh2.org/ 🚗 Hydrogen-Powered Vehicles We witnessed the future of mobility with Toyota and Honda showcasing the first production hydrogen fuel cell passenger cars. Particularly impressive was Air Products hydrogen-powered semi-truck. Leading the way in hydrogen trucking, Air Products is converting approximately 2000 Class 8 trucks to hydrogen fuel cells and announced plans to build a network of hydrogen refueling stations connecting the length of California. Learn more about their ambitious project here ➡ https://lnkd.in/gYTiRxWK 📚 Technical Sessions An engaging session on methane pyrolysis by Modern Hydrogen highlighted pioneering sustainable business models in the hydrogen economy. The presentation covered a bolt-on pyrolysis process skid for existing natural gas infrastructure and the novel use of the solid carbon produced to reduce the emissions intensity of asphalt in road construction. We are excited about the momentum of the California hydrogen sector and look forward to contributing to the state’s clean energy transition. If you have a particular topic you would like to discuss further or have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to either of our team members to expand the discussion or set up a meeting. Last week, I had the pleasure of speaking at the California Hydrogen Convention as part of the panel “California: On the Precipice of Becoming a Global Hydrogen Leader.” 🚘 💧 In the transportation field, California has been a global leader at the forefront of fuel cells and hydrogen for decades. On a per-capita basis, California has more hydrogen refueling stations and fuel cell vehicles than any country in the world except South Korea. 💰 The California Energy Commission has provided more than $250M in grants to companies to build public hydrogen refueling stations for passenger vehicles, and another $100M to commercial truck and bus refueling stations. Today, there are 54 passenger vehicle stations open to the public and 30 more planned. For large commercial vehicles, there are 7 refueling stations in operation and another 23 in development. Thanks to the CA Hydrogen Conference organizers and to our facilitator, Eric Guter, for having me alongside my fellow panelists: Stephen Cheung, Tyson Eckerle, and Hilary Norton (thanks for the photo!).
