About us

The City of Berkeley is distinguished by its diversity, community engagement, and activism. Home to the University of California’s flagship campus, Berkeley’s population is highly educated, diverse, and engaged. The City lies on the east shore of the San Francisco Bay and is sheltered by rolling hills on its eastern border. Berkeley spans 10 square miles with 124,000 residents. Our climate is mild year-round, with cool summers. An outdoor focus is demonstrated with acres of open space, parks, and an abundance of bike lanes on City streets. Public transportation is well developed and reliable, with three Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) stations in Berkeley. All of these factors translate to an outstanding quality of life for Berkeley residents, with an abundance of outdoor, recreational, and cultural activities. The City of Berkeley lies in Alameda County and operates under a Council-Manager form of government. The City is divided into eight districts, and each district elects one representative to the City Council. The eight-member City Council serves four-year terms, and a mayor is elected at large – also on a four-year term. The City Council appoints a City Manager, who serves as the Chief Executive of the City. Berkeley provides a comprehensive range of municipal services to its population, many of which are not typically provided by cities. In addition to the customary city services, the City of Berkeley operates its own Health, Housing and Community Services Department, providing public health, mental health, and environmental health services to the community. The City also provides its own residential and commercial solid waste collection, recycling, and disposal service. In addition, the City’s Parks, Recreation, and Waterfront Department offers a number of summer camps and operates a 1,000-berth marina. Join the City of Berkeley team. Berkeley earned a Prohousing designation from the State of California, an award reflecting the City's work to encourage housing development for all income levels. This designation supports local affordable housing in two ways: •  The City now has access to affordable housing funds dedicated only for Prohousing cities •  Local affordable housing projects will receive priority for competitive State funds The State recognized a number of efforts Berkeley has taken to increase housing: •  Removing minimum parking requirements •  Facilitating Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) production •  Providing regular development loans for affordable housing, which are available through a single Housing Trust Fund application •  Establishing the Small Sites Program to convert occupied multifamily rental properties as deed restricted affordable housing Kudos to staff across multiple departments who worked behind the scenes to make these changes to address the housing crisis facing our community. State funding helps support affordable housing projects such as those pictured: Maudelle Miller Shirek Community, Jordan Court, and Berkeley Way.

Looking forward to the opening of a new 87-unit affordable housing development this fall! Supported by $17 million in loans from the City's Housing Trust Fund, the Maudelle Miller Shirek Community is the first building in Berkeley to implement the preference policy, which aims to reduce displacement and address historical injustices. https://lnkd.in/gRKN9jSb

We had a great time sharing the progress of Maudelle Miller Shirek Community last week with stakeholders, the community, and members of Maudelle's family! Thanks to the work of Nibbi Brothers General Contractors and MWA Architects, Inc., the building is looking great and is set to open by early fall. As we reflect on another powerful Affordable Housing Month, we're reminded of the importance of bringing stable, affordable homes to the Bay Area. Soon this building, just steps away from Ashby BART, will be home to 200+ new residents. With a safe and stable home, residents will have access to new opportunities and the potential to change their lives and the lives of generations to come.

In Berkeley, it's now easier than ever to start a dance studio, perform live music, or open a pet store thanks to a set of updates to the City's zoning ordinance. These are just a few examples from a sweeping set of code changes designed to support small businesses and a thriving cultural and arts community. The impressive work by staff in the Office of Economic Development and Planning and Development Department earned an Award of Excellence in the Economic Planning and Development category from the Northern California Chapter of the American Planning Association!
