Who says an airport terminal can’t be inviting, artful, and tech-savvy? ✈️ That’s what you’ll find in the San Francisco International Airport’s renovated Harvey Milk Terminal 1—the northern half was unveiled earlier this week! Designed with sustainability and airport-goer well-being in mind, this terminal boasts new amenities like radiant heating and cooling, free water resources, public artwork, and a modern ticketing lobby and checkpoint. Our team has worked side by side SFO to manage this multi-phase project for the past nine years, providing project controls, cost engineering, scheduling, and resident and office engineering services. By facilitating seamless collaboration among many stakeholders, our teammates helped bring this visionary project to fruition. Congratulations to our Consor teammates, our teaming partner AECOM, the prime HENSEL PHELPS, SFO staff, and the many other collaborators for reaching this milestone!   #PMCM #programmangement #constructionmanagement #consorprojects #aviationinfrastructure

Since 2021, our team has managed the Anderson County Transportation Committee (ACTC) program in South Carolina, which helps fund local transportation projects, including state and county road and city street improvements. One of the benefits of this ongoing collaboration is cost savings through tailored project recommendations and streamlined delivery. The Dalton Road intersection project, which realigned the road about 350 feet south with a key access road to the local high school, shows this benefit in action. When the contractor discovered superelevation inconsistencies in the State Route to which the relocation connected, our design team quickly jumped in to revise the roadway plan and profile. Design Team Lead Chad Bobrowski worked daily with Project Lead Daniel Shaw, who was coordinating survey needs with the contractor’s layout team, to provide the elevation data as grading was underway. This daily coordination resulted in a speedy solution that avoided the contractor requesting a time extension or a change order. The intersection was completed three months ahead of schedule with 12% cost savings! Shout-out to our team members Daniel Shaw, Drew McCaffrey, Tommy Anderson, Dan Chism, and Chad Bobrowski, as well as county and contractor staff for a job well done. East of Salt Lake City in the Wasatch Range is picturesque Emigration Canyon, which holds historic significance as the original route pioneers took into this area of Utah. Winding Emigration Canyon Road is a popular cycling destination due to its views and recreation access. As we gear up for summer adventures, we’re looking back at our engineering design and public involvement work on this improvement project, which included: 💧 Roadway overlays, utility collar reconstructions, and shoulder and drainage improvements to move stormwater more effectively and help maintain the roadway’s integrity. 🚴 Lane striping adjustments to add bike lanes, improving safety for bike riders and drivers alike. 📣 Extensive outreach effort to address public concern around the roadway closure to cyclists during construction, which was necessary in the narrow canyon. Conversations around #safety need to go beyond the project site and the month of May (Mental Health Awareness Month). Our Director of Safety Ken Thomas shares how mental health and well-being outside of work impact safety in the field. Our mission to positively impact communities starts inside Consor. We’re dedicated to providing policies, assistance, and resources that holistically support the health and wellness of all our team members.    #mentalhealth #AECindustry #construction

    [Insert Buzzwords Here]

Did you know a person working in the construction industry is 5 times more likely to die from suicide than from a work-related injury? According to a 2023 study from the Centers for Disease Control, the suicide rate in the #AEC industry, specifically #construction, is 4 times the national average— and it's growing. A similar study from the US Census Bureau shows that the construction field ranks second in alcoholism and first in drug abuse, with opioids being the biggest issue; and we're running a close third for divorce, right behind bartenders and flight attendants. I'm not older than dirt, but it would be fair to say dirt was only a couple of years ahead of me in school. For safety people of my generation, what employees did and how they were doing outside of work hours simply wasn't a priority. The general attitude was, "We've got enough to deal with trying to get these folks to tie off and wear hardhats. What they do when they're off the clock is an S.E.P." (Somebody Else's Problem) I used to think that way myself, "That's a health and wellness thing. That's an HR deal. I don't get involved in that." Fortunately, that attitude has gradually changed over the years, as we've come to better understand how many injuries are a result of both home and work behavior. We've learned just how much a team member’s well-being in their personal life affects their work life and their safety on the job. Off-site isn't off-limits anymore. Mental health issues are 24-hour issues— and a teammate and friend lost to suicide or a drug overdose is every bit as tragic, painful, and unnecessary as one lost on the job. But that still leaves us with the question: as safety professionals, supervisors, industry and business leaders, what are we going to do about it? We have to start by being willing to talk about it, and that's not easy. There's no rulebook. No OSHA regulations to enforce, no ANSI standards, no scientific guidance from NIOSH. It's just us, wrestling with a topic we have to approach with care, compassion, and understanding; and conversations we need to back up with information, guidance, support and resources. In a couple of weeks Audrey Ralston, MS and I will conduct a Learn & Lead session on mental health and suicide prevention with all 1700(!) of our colleagues at CONSOR Engineers. I'm pretty proud to be part of an organization that not only wants us to get that conversation going, but is giving us a platform to do it and the support to go with it. It carries a lot of weight with me when your team practices what it preaches. I know mental illness and suicide seem like insurmountable issues. It can be very tempting to throw up your hands and say "That's just the nature of the industry." But it's not. In my career I've seen a lot of progress made on so-called intractable problems, and that experience gives me confidence that with integrity, grit, and collaboration, we can address these as well. Our people and our industry deserve no less.

The Yankee Jims Bridge project is a case study in the cost- and time-saving potential of #CMGC delivery. Shout-out to the entire project team for working together closely to overcome the challenges of this constrained site over the north fork of the American River! Stay tuned next month for a full article from Mark Reno, our Western Director of Structures, breaking down the creative solutions this collaboration generated. #consorprojects

Vice President / Director of Structures Western US

One of the biggest benefits of construction manager/general contractor (CMGC) delivery is the collaborative nature of making engineering-based decisions while evaluating process and reducing risk. For example, on the Yankee Jims Bridge Replacement Project working with Placer County (owner), HDR (geotech), CONSOR Engineers (design) and Flatiron Construction (CMGC), our team completed numerous analysis/evaluations, had many meetings and countless discussions about the difficult rock removal at this challenging project site. The logistics of removing the rock material on this large project would significantly impact the project costs and overall schedule. The magnitude of this risk could have represented a major amount of the overall project cost. A CMGC delivery process allowed us to roll out anticipated equipment, assemble the various project team members and experts, and put on a live demonstration, which provided the hard data needed to make critical decisions. The result of this demonstration was a reduction in the overall project timeline by months, as well as substantial risk and cost minimization. #Consorprojects #CMGC #bridgeengineering #iworkforconsor
