Providing free marine data & services to enable marine policy implementation support Blue growth & scientific innovation
About us
The Copernicus Marine Service (or Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service) is the marine component of the Copernicus Programme of the European Union. It provides free, regular and systematic authoritative information on the state of the Blue (physical), White (sea ice) and Green (biogeochemical) ocean, on a global and regional scale. It is funded by the European Commission (EC) and implemented by Mercator Ocean International. It is designed to serve EU policies and International legal Commitments related to Ocean Governance, to cater for the needs of society at large for global ocean knowledge and to boost the Blue Economy across all maritime sectors by providing free-of-charge state-of-the-art ocean data and information. It provides key inputs that support major EU and international policies and initiatives and can contribute to: combating pollution, marine protection, maritime safety and routing, sustainable use of ocean resources, developing marine energy resources, blue growth, climate monitoring, weather forecasting, and more. It also aims to increase awareness amongst the general public by providing European and global citizens with information about ocean-related issues.

Wow! That is one large phytoplankton bloom 😮 This image was captured from space by the #Copernicus Sentinel-3's Ocean and Land Colour Instrument on 27 June in the #BalticSea. The bloom is likely caused by cyanobacteria, which are a seasonal occurrence in the region and can be exacerbated by nutrient run off from land. These blooms can impact both human and environmental health. Visualise Copernicus Sentinel-3 data with EUMETview (view.eumetsat.int) or Sentinel-2 and -3 data with WEkEO (https://www.wekeo.eu/) 🛰️

🌊The European Digital Twin Ocean (EU DTO) is making strides! The Digital Ocean Forum 2024 on 13 June marked an important milestone for the #EUDTO, as the European Commission, Mercator Ocean International (MOi) and the VLIZ - Flanders Marine Institute unveiled the pre-operational platform. The event featured a live demonstration in the presence of European Commission representatives, scientific officers and civil society organisations, underscoring the collaborative nature of the project. A powerful tool for science-driven decision-making, the EDITO - European Digital Twin Ocean will represent a significant leap forward in our ability to monitor, predict, and understand Ocean dynamics, helping to drive sustainable Ocean management. As a flagship initiative of the EC's Mission Restore Our Ocean and Waters, the EU DTO supports the EU Green Deal and the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. The platform is set to gradually scale up throughout 2025. The #DOF2024 was organised under the auspices of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024 and co-hosted by the European Commission’s Directorates-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD), Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE), and Defence, Industry and Space (DG DEFIS), in collaboration with Mercator Ocean International (MOi) and the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ).
