African boxthorn is one of Australia's worst invasive plants, forming impenetrable thickets armoured with fierce thorns. It can block access to water, outcompete native vegetation, and provide a safe haven for pests. But new research has found at least some Australians who are benefiting from this ferocious weed: greater stick-nest rats that are living it up in boxthorn B&Bs. Looking for something to read? A history of Australia's plant pathology may be our pick of the crop 🌱 A new Historical Records of Australian Science special collection, published in cooperation with the Australian Plant Pathology Society, showcases the colourful history of plant pathology in Australia since colonisation. The collection pays special attention to some of the major plant diseases that affected agriculture in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and highlights challenges faced by Australia's plant pathologists, including isolation, lack of recognition overseas and discriminatory government regulations. https://lnkd.in/ghMJHnC3 #HistoricalRecordsAS #OpenAccess #PlantPathology #Agriculture #AustralianHistory

Congratulations to Guilherme Oliveira Andrade da Silva, recipient of the Soil Research Annual Student Prize for the best student-authored paper published in the journal in 2023. Guilherme was lead author for the paper 'Accelerating soil aggregate formation: a review on microbial processes as the critical step in a post-mining rehabilitation context'. Guilherme and his co-authors found that fungal inoculants showed promise in boosting microbial activity and accelerating soil development on coal mine spoil – insights that pave the way for tailored approaches in mine site rehabilitation, ensuring a more sustainable future for the industry. Congratulations Guilherme! The University of Queensland | #SoilResearch #RealScientist #EarlyCareerResearcher
