Recently, a candidate reached out to #DelphiUS about an opportunity. During the screening process it was evident the technical acumen was excellent. However, as the conversation continued it was clear the lack of job opportunities was related to the candidate’s communication style. Working together, the recruiter outlined how the candidate could improve on their communication and make a good impression in the candidate’s next interview. Here’s an outline of what was covered: 1. Define ‘soft skills’ – The recruiter framed soft skills as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, adaptability and leadership 2. Prepare detailed, authentic examples – The candidate was tasked with creating concrete, detailed examples, pulled from past employment. Scenarios involving teamwork, problem-solving, adaptability, and leadership are excellent areas to focus on. While not required, the STAR method provides a logical way to structure the examples 3. Set realistic expectations – It’s unrealistic to expect a candidate to immediately reach ‘Toastmaster’ level, but even a small improvement can help secure an offer, and provide a foundation to build from in the future 4. Ensure the individual and company culture are a match – Prior to the interview, the recruiter advised the candidate to ask insightful questions about the company culture, team dynamics, and expectations. Organizational cultures vary and the candidate needs to gauge if the opportunity it a match for them. What advice to you have for job seekers struggling with soft skills?
