FCCI RISK CONTROL SPOTLIGHT ON SAFETY June is National Safety Month, promoting awareness and reducing the leading causes of preventable injury and death. Safety is a shared responsibility, and each of us has a role to play in creating a safer environment. The National Safety Council (NSC) offers free weekly resources this month to help keep workplaces safe and prevent accidents. 1. Emergency preparedness refers to the action taken to be ready and responsive toward emergencies or disasters. 2. Slips, trips and falls are the most common hazards in the workplace. To mitigate this, wear proper footwear with slip-resistant soles, modify flooring with non-slippery materials and be aware of your surroundings. 3. Heat-related illnesses can lead to various health problems and can be fatal at times. It is important to stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing and take breaks in a cool environment. If you feel symptoms of a heat illness, seek medical attention immediately. 4. Hazard recognition is the process of identifying, assessing and prioritizing hazards in the workplace, both existing and potential. Assess the risks, create control measures, communicate with each other and monitor your environment to control the workplace and protect workers. Let’s commit to safety this month and work together to keep each other safe. https://www.nsc.org/

FCCI hosted the annual Risk Control Conference at our Sarasota Home Office from May 14 to 16. This event, titled ‘Rise to the Challenge,’ was an opportunity for 50 of our Risk Control teammates from across the five regions to gather, network and learn. Attendees heard presentations by FCCI leadership and key vendor partner experts, including HSB - Hartford Steam Boiler, the National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA), Newleaf Training and Development and SafetyFirst The NFSA President Shane Ray led a controlled burn with their side-by-side sprinkler valve trailers in the parking lot to demonstrate the benefits of automatic sprinkler systems. A big thanks to the Sarasota County Fire Marshal and Fire Department for their assistance. Mr. Ray then gave a presentation to the risk control group on emerging trends, including the firefighting challenges posed by the proliferation of lithium-ion batteries. Thank you to everyone who organized and participated in this important educational event. #riskcontrol
