First Solar has expanded manufacturing capacity in the US and expects to reach 14 gigawatts of annual nameplate capacity by 2026. Each panel proves it’s possible to out-innovate and out-compete China by manufacturing in America, for America, using American materials. We celebrate the American solar worker and the extensive value chains which span the United States and enable the country’s energy transition. Since 1999, First Solar has called northwest Ohio home, producing American-designed and made thin film solar panels in what is today the largest fully vertically integrated solar panel manufacturing complex outside of China. By strategically building and sustaining US supply chains, First Solar is investing in America and enabling growth and jobs not just for the solar industry but for other US industries, such as glass, steel, mining, and transportation, to name a few. Electricity is the lifeblood of America. Once manufactured, #FirstSolar ships its solar panels to sites around the country where engineers and construction workers install them in large-scale solar power plants using components like mounting structures, cabling, and inverters, often sourced from other American companies. Tellurium is a crucial component in First Solar's thin film semiconductor, and at the Rio Tinto Kennecott mine in Magna, Utah, it’s refined from copper mining waste tailings. First Solar gives tellurium new life as the most eco-efficient photovoltaic semiconductor available today. Just one kilogram of First Solar’s tellurium-based semiconductor can be recycled 41x to produce clean energy for over 1,200 years. First Solar is proud to commission its new Ohio R&D innovation center, believed to be the largest facility of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. It covers 1.3 million square feet and includes a high-tech pilot manufacturing line to produce full-sized prototypes of thin film and tandem PV modules. The Jim Nolan Center is part of an approximately half-billion-dollar investment by First Solar in R&D infrastructure in Ohio, which also includes a perovskite development line that’s expected to be commissioned in the second half of 2024.
