Sustainability through transparency in global fishing activity

About us

Global Fishing Watch (GFW) is an international non-profit organisation committed to advancing the sustainability of our oceans through increased transparency. By harnessing cutting-edge technology, our mapping platform provides a powerful tool for ocean governance, empowering anyone to view or download data and investigate global fishing activity in near real-time, for free. GFW was founded in 2015 through a collaboration between Oceana, SkyTruth and Google. Our work is made possible thanks to the generous support of our funding partners. Our research, data and technology partners are central to achieving our mission to accelerate innovation and deliver actionable insights to increase transparency in commercial fishing and the sustainable management of our oceans.

📢 JUST PUBLISHED: We're excited to be lead authors on a new study in Nature that illuminates the expanding footprint of human activity at sea! 🛰️ The groundbreaking research harnesses AI, satellite imagery and vessel GPS data to reveal previously unmapped industrial activity on the ocean—and how it is changing. 🤝 Working alongside researchers from University of Wisconsin-Madison, Duke University, UC Santa Barbara and SkyTruth, Global Fishing Watch analyzed 2 million gigabytes of satellite imagery spanning 2017-2021, to detect vessels and offshore infrastructure in coastal waters across six continents. Learn more about this groundbreaking advancement in ocean transparency below. 🌐 English: https://bitly.ws/38yJc 🌐 Spanish: https://bitly.ws/38yL4 #AI #BigData #Technology #OceanConservation

✨🗺️ Our map has a bright new look! We recently updated the framework that makes the geospatial visualization possible in our platform and are now using deck.gl, an open source library that allows us to create high-resolution, complex visualizations in an efficient way. This gives us greater flexibility when it comes to generating visualizations for different types of human activity data. The new version of the map automatically adjusts the color ramps of each data layer shown on screen, better facilitating the work of analysts and researchers in understanding patterns of behavior. Hear more about the technology behind this change from one of our engineers, Jose Angel Parreño 👉 https://bit.ly/3YvTdD8

⛴️ Tracking the shifting vessel identities of the global fishing fleet is critical to increasing transparency and accountability on the high seas. ⚓ Understanding these shifts can help unmask potential links between reflagging and unauthorized activity. 📊 By making this information publicly available, flag States and port States are supported in identifying, investigating and clamping down on illegal fishing and other unscrupulous operations that may have gone unchecked without these crucial insights. ⚓ At the heart of sustainable fisheries management — is vessel tracking. 📊 Vessel tracking helps bring greater accountably, compliance and protection to an industry that provides more than 33 million jobs to the global economy. ⛴️ By leveraging AIS and VMS monitoring systems, fisheries managers are able to obtain a more comprehensive picture of vessel activity on the water and better target inspections. 📊 These technological systems support increased transparency across global fisheries sectors by providing crucial data that informs decision making, protect biodiversity, ensure the safety of fishers and intercept activities that may be linked to #IUUFishing. 🌐 More here: bit.ly/3xqJbbu

🤝 Partnerships are not only integral to the way Global Fishing Watch advances ocean governance, they are also critical to achieving the 2030 agenda for sustainable development. And they are especially key to preserving our planet’s precious marine ecosystems as they face unprecedented mounting challenges from climate change, #IUUFishing and other pervasive challenges. 🌊 Only by working together can we aspire to achieve the 30x30 initiative to end overfishing, restore marine biodiversity and protect 30 percent of the ocean by 2030. 🌏 The ASEAN region, which comprises the territories of 10 Southeast Asian Member States, is home to a third of the world’s coastal and marine habitats. But like other marine ecosystems around the world, these invaluable habitats are increasingly under threat. 🤝 That’s why we’re thrilled to highlight our latest collaboration with the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity, discussing science-based solutions and strategies to boost marine resources conservation across the ASEAN region through technology and transparency. 👤 The work kicked off last week at the ACB headquarters in Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines, with a two-day workshop. Experts from Global Fishing Watch and the ACB explored opportunities to promote open-source and data-driven solutions for ocean sustainability and outlined future collaborative projects aimed at biodiversity conservation. 🗨️ "We’re excited to meet with our ASEAN colleagues and launch this critical partnership,” said Hoki Lo, a senior manager on the global programs team at Global Fishing Watch. 🗨️ “Through dialogue and collaboration, we are learning more about the ACB’s important efforts in safeguarding biodiversity across the vast ASEAN region while also building the ACB’s capacity to leverage our cutting-edge technology and tools to boost their marine protection efforts. We look forward to developing this initiative even further in our joint quest to protect one of our planet’s most precious marine treasures.”

🌊 One of the many applications of Marine Manager is monitoring ecosystems like mangroves – plants and shrubs that grow in the salty coastal waters of tropical and subtropical environments. 🍃 Harboring the ability to store vast amounts of carbon, mangroves help regulate climate change and protect shorelines from floods, waves and damaging winds, serving as a buffer between marine and terrestrial communities. Mangrove forests, like the one in Barima Mora Passage in #Guyana which stretches along 100 kilometers of the country’s northwest coast, serves as a safe haven for wildlife and helps protect the livelihoods of those living in shoreline communities that depend on the marine resources of their surrounding areas. 👤 Annette Arjoon-Martins, founder of the Guyana Marine Conservation Society, sees significant potential in Marine Manager when it comes to oversight of Guyana’s invaluable mangrove forests.
