“I had a lot of anger issues in my early teens,” he said. “Hanna helped me get through that period. If I hadn’t received the help I needed, I would have probably gotten into many more fights and struggled to finish high school. Very likely, I would not have pursued a higher education. Now, I’m the first in my family to do so. And I can help my mom out at home. I’m optimistic about my future and thankful that Hanna was there for me.” Jordan is a 2021 Hanna graduate and a lifelong Sonoma resident. He is the first in his family to pursue higher education. Thank you, Dan Johnson and Sonoma Media Investments, LLC, for publishing the article highlighting Hanna Academy’s new Residential Program today. We are fortunate that our campus affords us the infrastructure for students who live on campus to benefit from receiving trauma-informed care from many angles, not only during school hours but all day every day. They are interacting with highly trained staff, which leads to lasting impact in the lives of these youth.

Thank you to the Sonoma Valley Index Tribune for sharing the news of a grant award we are proud to receive—The Elevate Youth California Grant, awarded by the California Department of Health Care Services through its contract with Sierra Health Foundation. Elevate Youth California is a statewide program of community leaders, partners and youth who are investing in a more equitable California. The program is addressing substance use disorder by investing in youth leadership and civic engagement for youth of color and youth ages 12 to 26 who are 2SLGBTQ+ (Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, and additional sexual orientation or identities) and living in communities disproportionately impacted by the war on drugs. Hanna Institute will use the grant funds to support youth programs to provide community-based initiatives designed to instill a sense of purpose and belonging among young people in Sonoma. Congratulations to Carolyn Flannery, founder of Make It Home Bay Area, for winning last week’s Jefferson Award from KPIX | CBS San Francisco/Bay Area! Since June 2022, ‘Make It Home’ has donated and installed dozens of cottage rooms on Hanna’s campus, with everything from donated furniture, new mattresses, bedding, artwork, and rugs to light fixtures, locker equipment, and more. The love and care that Carolyn and her team put into decorating each room to make it unique is evident and goes a long way toward making foster youth in our transitional residential program feel like they are home and safe. We are so grateful for all that ‘Make It Home’ has done for Hanna, and thrilled for Carolyn for winning this award!
