Here is a glimpse at what one of our Welcome Corps Home Teams in #WashingtonDC has been up to! #WelcomeHome #HomeForRefugees #DC #CommunitySponsorship Welcome.US ------------------------------------- Home for Refugees USA was established to provide opportunities for everyday people to welcome and work with their new refugee neighbors to help them build new lives in their new homes. When refugees arrive, they bring new life to communities through the transformative friendships they form with their Home Team and by getting involved in their new communities. This model has been successful, as we have welcomed individuals and families from 13 different countries and mobilized more than 820 volunteers since our establishment in 2016. In January 2023, the U.S. Department of State introduced a new program called “Welcome Corps,” allowing private sponsorship of refugees and representing the future of resettlement in the United States. Under this program, ordinary Americans can form a private sponsor group (PSG) and apply to welcome refugees into their local communities. These sponsor groups directly assist refugees as they establish their new lives in the United States. PSGs, also known as Home Teams at HFR, would take on the role of a resettlement agency and provide support to refugees after their arrival for three months. Leveraging our experience, Home for Refugees USA was invited as one of the twelve pioneer organizations to guide these teams looking to sponsor. Over the past year and a half, our team has trained, recruited, and provided guidance to volunteers eager to welcome refugees under the new Welcome Corps refugee pathway. We have built a new structure for this latest pathway within HFR for welcoming with a team's three month commitment after arrival and have successfully integrated refugees into their new communities nationwide. We are forming our eighth Home Team through the Welcome Corps pathway which brings our total of Home Teams to 167 since 2016! We wanted to highlight one of our Welcome Corps Home Teams! “Behind these stark and rising numbers lie countless human tragedies. That suffering must galvanize the international community to act urgently to tackle the root causes of forced displacement.” Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Every year on June 20th, the world celebrates #WorldRefugeeDay, a day to honor the resiliency, strength, and courage of those who had to flee their home country due to conflict or persecution. World Refugee Day is not only a day of highlighting the plight of refugees, but it is also a day to mobilize communities around the world to advocate for the betterment of refugees’ lives, so that they can move from a place of survival to a place where they can thrive and find new hope. Home for Refugees participated in a World Refugee Day event hosted by the Los Angeles Refugee Forum in partnership with the LA County Department of Social Services and the LA County Office of Immigrant Affairs at El Cariso Community Regional Park in Sylmar, CA. Various service providers and non-profits came together to put together a resource fair that was opened to the community. There were workshops immigrants and refugees attended as well as giveaways and live entertainment. Home for Refugees had a wonderful time connecting with potential volunteers and refugee families as well as reconnecting with our partners, such as International Rescue Committee Los Angeles, Immigrant and Refugee Immigration Service Los Angeles, International Institute of Los Angeles, JFCS of Long Beach/West Orange County, Church World Service Orange County, and Uplift Charity. In talking with our partners, the need for volunteers remains constant. Refugee individuals and families continue to need our support to restart their lives in their new homes. If you or someone you know is interested in how you can make a difference in the lives of #refugees, email us at [email protected] to inquire about our next virtual informational session. #WorldRefugeeDay2024 #HomeForRefugees #CommunitySponsorship #RefugeeForum #losangeles

Since 2020 Home for Refugees USA is honored to have been a partner and virtual clinical site for the University of California Irvine Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing. Every quarter, nursing students collaborate with our refugee families and offer various services such as telehealth, resource guides, and public health information. For the winter 2024 quarter, HFR was part of a leadership class where seven students provided recommendations to expand our recruitment and enhance our effectiveness when engaging with potential volunteers. We are grateful for the students' assistance and appreciate our continued partnership with UCI. #ucinursing #refugees #communitysponsorship
