Michael Baker International provided engineering services for the replacement of the Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley bridges that form east and west gateways to the Land Between the Lakes (LBL), a pristine and uninhabited National Recreation Area. The new bridges, the first in Kentucky to use a basket handle, tiered-arch design, now stand as landmarks providing safe and reliable crossing over these two major lakes. The replacement of the bridges is associated with a larger effort to widen and improve U.S. 68/KY 80 to a four-lane highway in western Kentucky. The New Jersey Department of Transportation replaced the deteriorated Route 52 Causeway, Ocean City's emergency evacuation route, due to congestion and storm damage. Michael Baker International managed the project in phases to avoid traffic disruptions and environmental impacts and provided design and construction support services on the project, including bridge and roadway design, fishing piers, facility design for the visitors’ building, environmental permitting, lighting design, traffic and intelligent transportation system design, utility relocation, community outreach and construction management and inspection. The new causeway, completed in two contracts, includes four lanes, shoulders, and a multi-use path, enhancing safety and efficiency for evacuations.
